1 architecture comfort zone market viability THESIS STATEMENT : THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE KNOXVILLE COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN IS SEEKING TO ESTABLISH ITSELF AS A PREMIER DESIGN + RESEARCH DESTINATION. IN EFFORT TO FURTHER THIS INITIATIVE, THE CA+D IS PREPARED TO SUBMIT A PROPOSAL TO PARTICIPATE IN THE 2009 SOLAR DECATHLON COMPETITION IN WASHINGTON, D.C. THE adapt modular dwelling unit(s) CONCEPT SERVES TO MEET THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE COMPETITION WHILE ESTABLISHING A SENSE OF PLACE FOR A MOBILE DWELLING UNIT. THE adapt mdu ARE DESIGNED AS A SERIES OF EASILY CONFIGURED, RAPIDLY ASSEMBLED, PERSONALLY CUSTOMIZED RESIDENCES WITH THE ABILITY TO ADAPT TO CONDITIONS OF SITE, PROGRAM, AND BUDGET. THE MOST STRIKING FEATURE OF THE adapt mdu CONCEPT IS THE VERTICAL WOOD SLAT EXTERIOR. THIS FORM S INSPIRATION CAME FROM THE TEST SITE ECOLOGY, HOME TO A NUMBER OF LARGE PECAN TREES. THESE MASSIVE TREES BEAR A FRUIT WHICH IS ENCASED IN A HARD INNER SHELL AND A EPHEMERAL OUTER SHELL. THE adapt mdu FORM CAN BE SEEN AS A DIRECT EMULATION OF THE BLUEPRINT WHICH NATURE HAS PROVIDED. THE INDIVIDUAL MODULES INSIDE ARE CONFIGURED TO ALLOW FOR MAXIMUM PROGRAMMATIC VARIANCE, WITH A SERVICE WALL LOCATED ALONG A LONG AXIS. THE DESIGN ALLOWS FOR MULTIPLE SEASON ENJOYMENT OF THE OUTDOOR SPACES, WITH NUMEROUS MEASURES INTEGRATED INTO THE DESIGN WHICH MITIGATE THE NEED FOR SIGNIFICANT HEATING AND COOLING LOADS. 01 SITE ECOLOGY
