Yuth Curt is a delinquency preventin and cmmunity diversin prgram patterned after the Family Curt prcess. Yuth Curt's primary gal is t prevent juvenile ffenders frm being sent t Family Curt. Wh Operates Yuth Curt? Yuths between the ages f 12 and 19. They serve as judges, law guardians (public defenders), facts attrneys (prsecutrs), bailiffs and clerks in curt cases f their peers. Yuth Curt derives its jurisdictin frm lcal legal

4 authrities wh have given their supprt t this prgram. What Kind f Offenders are Handled inyuth Curt? Offenders between the ages f 7 and 15, wh have allegedly cmmitted an ffense n greater than a misdemeanr, can be referred t Yuth Curt. Wh Are The Referral Surces? Referrals are made t the curt by plice agencies. Yuth Curt Was Established T: Make Jamestwn yuth aware f the laws and their respnsibility t cmply with them. Prevent ptential delinquents frm becming juvenile delinquents r persns in need f supervisin (PINS). Develp a respect fr the juvenile justice system rather than a resentment twards it. Allw the ffender a way t pay fr his/her ffense in a cnstructive manner withut having a finding f juvenile delinquency. What Kind Of Offenses Are Handled In Yuth Curt? N felny charges are handled in Yuth Curt. Offenses include misdemeanrs, vilatins and infractins. Primary ffenses tried in Yuth Curt are petit larceny, criminal trespass, criminal mischief, alng with ther vilatins and infractins. In certain circumstances, the arresting fficer has a great deal f latitude in determining whether a particular ffense will be tried in Yuth Curt r Family Curt. A yuth caught inside a building culd cnceivably be charged with burglary (a felny) r criminal trespass (a misdemeanr). If the charge is burglary, the yuth autmatically ges t Family Curt. If, hwever, the charge is criminal trespass, the fficer has the ptin f requiring the yuth t appear in Family Curt, r if he feels the yuth shuld be given a secnd chance, he ffers the yuth and his parents the ptin f Yuth Curt. Mst cases are first-time ffenders fr minr vilatins which withut Yuth Curt wuld be handled thrugh Prbatin r Family Curt. Are Parents Invlved In Yuth Curt? In the event the parents and the ffenders chse t g t Yuth Curt, they are given a curt date. At least ne f the parents must appear in curt with the ffender. The requirement that at least ne parent be present in the curt

5 at the time f the trial is bth fr the prtectin f the yuth and fr the enlightenment f the parents. What Happens Next? The case is referred t a juvenile aid fficer t insure that the ffender meets the eligibility requirements fr Yuth Curt handling. At the curt appearance, the ffender is asked t plead guilty r nt guilty befre his peers. If the plea is guilty, the ffender is questined by the fact-finding attrney in an effrt t determine circumstances surrunding his act. The judge can als ask questins if s/he desires. After hearing the facts, the curt has several ptins. The dispsitin f the case can be: 5. Dismissal f the charge. 6. A letter f aplgy t the victim. 7. A sentence f cmmunity wrk hurs. 8. Essay papers t be returned t the Yuth Curt. What Kind Of Training Is Offered Fr Yuth Serving On The Curt? At least six training sessins including mck trials Discussins including vcabulary and terminlgy Each teen is given a manual t study Hw Often Are Yuth Trained? Usually nce a year. Names are accumulated until training is set, then yuth are cntacted.
