1 COTHAM SCHOOL COTHAM SCHOOL SEX EDUCATION AND RELATIONSHIPS EDUCATION POLICY In line with Every Child Matters (DfSF 2005) Cotham School s aim is for every child, whatever their background or circumstances, to have the support they need to Be healthy Stay safe Enjoy and achieve Make a positive contribution Achieve economic wellbeing We are also committed to supporting the social and emotional development of our students. The Purpose of this Policy is to clarify the legal requirement and the responsibilities of the school in relation to Sex and Relationships Education (SRE). Maintained secondary schools in England and Wales have a legal responsibility to provide SRE and must have an up to date written statement available to parents/carers. Policy Statement Sex and Relationships Education (SRE) is an entitlement for all students at Cotham School. This is in recognition of the importance of encouraging the development of responsible sexual attitudes and behaviour as students move to adulthood. The moral framework will reflect the overall ethos of the school and show respect for diversity of cultures and beliefs within the whole school community. Delivery will be balanced and factual with opportunity for discussion. Sexual relationships will be presented in the context of human relationships such as parenthood and families, acknowledging the individual differences within family makeup. The SRE Programme will, at all times, seek to promote those values that are common to all faiths and societies with a respect for human life and dignity. The school recognises that parents currently have the right to withdraw their children from those parts of SRE that do not form part of the National Curriculum, and will inform parents of the procedure.

2 Overall Aims of the Policy To provide opportunities for all students to learn and achieve. To promote students moral, social, spiritual and cultural development and prepare all students for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life. To provide accurate, age appropriate information about and increase understanding of Sex and Relationship Education issues. To explore a range of attitudes towards SRE issues and to understand the role of peer pressure and media influence. To help students make their own informed choices. To dispel myths. To develop respect and care for others. To increase students self esteem. To develop skills relevant to effective management of relationships. This includes communication with and empathy towards others, risk assessment, assertiveness, conflict management, decision making, seeking help and helping others. To contribute to a reduction in local and national teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted infection and abortion rates. To communicate clearly to all parents/carers and staff and students how SRE will be delivered in the school. To provide all Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) staff with training to teach SRE. To equip all Year Learning Co-ordinators and Tutors with an understanding of how to manage discussions with students around SRE issues that come up with students on an individual basis as part of their day to day work. Morals and Values Framework: Our approach to SRE will be within a clear framework based on the following principles: The value of stable and loving relationships. Respect, understanding and empathy towards others who may have different backgrounds, cultures, sexuality, feelings and views. The development of relationships, including sexual relationships, based on mutual consent, rather than coercion. The right not to be abused by other people or taken advantage of. The right of people to follow their own sexuality within legal parameters. Aims of the SRE Programme are: Knowledge and Understanding Learning and understanding physical development at appropriate stages. Understanding human sexuality, sexual health, emotions and relationships. Learning about contraception and a range of local and national sexual health advice, contraception and support services. Learning the reasons for delaying sexual activity and the benefits to be gained from delaying. The avoidance of unplanned pregnancy.

3 Attitudes and Values Learning the importance of values and individual conscience and moral considerations. Learning the importance of family life, partnerships, marriage and stable, loving relationships for the nurture of children. Learning the value of respect, love and care. Exploring, considering and understanding moral dilemmas. Developing critical thinking as part of decision making. Personal and Social Skills Learning to manage emotions and relationships confidently and sensitively. Developing self respect and empathy for others. Learning to make choices based on an understanding of difference and with an absence of prejudice. Empowerment to make healthy decisions and understanding the consequences of choices made. Managing conflict and risk. Learning how to recognise and avoid exploitation and abuse. Inclusion Young people may have varying needs regarding SRE depending on their circumstances and background. Cotham School strongly believes that all students should have access to SRE that is relevant to their Particular needs. To achieve this, the school s approach to SRE will take account of: The needs of both boys and girls. We will consider their particular needs and use approaches that will actively engage both boys and girls. Ethnic and cultural diversity. In consultation with students, parents and carers we will take account of and promote respect for the views of different ethnic and cultural groups. Varying home backgrounds Sexuality. On average about 5% of our students will go on to define themselves as gay, lesbian or bisexual (GLB). Our approach to SRE will include sensitive, honest and balanced consideration of sexuality. Our pastoral support will take account of the needs of GLB students and we will actively tackle homophobic bullying. Special Educational Needs. Contraceptive advice to students. If students need further individual personal advice about contraceptive use, pregnancy and avoidance of sexually transmitted infections outside of SRE teaching, counselling and support will be sought from appropriate agencies eg School Health Nurse, School Counsellor and School-Based sexual health services such as Brook 4YP. A Whole School Approach The whole school community will be actively involved in SRE. In particular: The Senior Management Team will endeavour to support the provision and development of SRE in line with this policy by providing leadership and adequate resourcing. The designated SRE Co-ordinator currently Ms Quaife will maintain an overview of provision and have overall responsibility for its development including support for staff. Teaching Staff. All teachers are involved in the school s SRE provision, some through teaching of PSHE and some through science and other curriculum areas, and all through offering support to

4 students. Teachers will be consulted about the school s approach to SRE and aided in their work by provision of resources, background information, support and advice from experienced members of staff and access to appropriate training. They will be aware of and have training in Cotham School s Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy. Non Teaching Staff. They may play an important informal pastoral support role with students and will have access to appropriate training. They will be aware of and have training in the school s Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy. The School Health Nurse. The school will work in ongoing consultation and partnership with the school health nurse. Outside Agencies and Speakers. They may be involved in inputting to SRE lessons and as points of referral as support services for students. Cotham School will only work with agencies and speakers who are appropriate to students and whose policies and values are consistent with the SRE Policy. We shall work in partnership with them and jointly plan their work within the school. The school will also promote relevant helping agencies that students can access and whose policies and values are in agreement with the SRE Policy. All outside agencies and speakers will be aware of the school s Safeguarding and Child Protection Policies. Organisation of SRE Cotham School s approach to SRE will consist of: The taught National Curriculum Programme of Study for PSHE (from Autumn 2009) delivered within KS3 and KS4. The taught National Curriculum Science Programme of Study. Pastoral support for students who experience difficulties. Confidentiality and Informing Parents/Carers Students will always be encouraged to talk to their parents or carers if possible. A teacher is not required by law to inform student s parents or carers of their request for help or contraceptive advice and can maintain confidentiality in accordance with Cotham School s Confidentiality Policy. If however the member of staff believes a student, or a third party, to be at risk of abuse or harm they must immediately follow Cotham School s Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy and inform the Designated Teacher. School staff cannot promise absolute confidentiality if approached by a student for help. Staff must make this clear to students. Safeguarding and Child Protection procedures must be followed when any disclosures giving cause for concern are made. Students will always be encouraged to talk to their parents or carers if possible. Parents/Carers Right to Withdraw their Child If parents/carers wish to withdraw their child they must inform the school in writing. This information will be shared with the Learning Co-ordinator and School Health Nurse. Students who are withdrawn are still able to receive information from staff regarding SRE issues. The Science Curriculum element of SRE is statutory. Every effort will be made to contact the parents/carers of the student withdrawn to discuss the matter with them. The contact will be made via the PSHE Co-ordinator, the Learning Co-ordinator and/or the EAL teacher as appropriate.

5 Dissemination of Policy A summary of this policy will be in the School Prospectus. A full copy of this policy will be in the staff handbook. Parents/carers may obtain a full copy form the PSHE Co-ordinator.
