TEACHER INFORMATION MYTHS OF STDs As the following statements are read, have the students write True or False on their papers: 1. Most people with an STD experience painful symptoms. (False. Most people who are infected with an STD, men and women alike, do not notice any symptoms until they visit their doctor or suffer from infertility. Sores do not have to be painful to be a problem.) 2. Birth control pills prevent the spread of STDs. ( False. Birth control pills prevent pregnancy, but do not offer protection from sexually transmitted diseases or infections. They may change the ph in the vagina and make the woman more susceptible to gonorrhea.) 3. Douching will cure and STD. (False. Douching, or washing the vagina out, may only spread an infection from the vagina into the uterus. Unless specially prescribed by a doctor, douching will not cure an STD.) 4. Abstinence is the best way to prevent STDs. (True. Abstinence from sexual intercourse is the most effective way to avoid becoming exposed to a sexually transmitted disease. However, some genital tract infections can be spread through oral sex and close body-to-body contact.) 5. If you get an STD once, and are treated, you can t get it again. (False. Even if a person has been treated with antibiotics, he/she can be re-infected if she/he has sexual contact with someone who carries the disease.) 6. A person does not need to see a doctor if she/he notices scores on his/her genitals once, but then they go away. (False. Even if symptoms go away after a week or so, a person still needs to see a doctor. Just because the symptoms have abated, doesn t mean the disease has disappeared.) 7. Condoms help prevent the spread of STDs (True. Although condoms are not 100% effective in preventing exposure to STDs, they are much better than nothing. They prevent direct skin-to-skin contact. Genital areas not covered by the condom may still be infected.)
1. 30 to 40 million Americans currently have a) HIV/AIDS b) herpes <-- correct answer c) chlamydia Herpes affects more people in the United States than any other sexually transmitted disease. It's currently estimated that 30 to 40 million Americans have herpes. Chlamydia, however, chalks up more new cases in the United States each year than any other STD: there are about 4 million new cases of chlamydia each year, as compared to 500,000 new cases of herpes. See FAQ for more surprising information about STD infection rates in the United States. 2. Women who've had an STD are at increased risk for: a) infertility <-- correct answer b) HIV/AIDS <-- correct answer c) cervical cancer <-- correct answer Unfortunately, all of these answers are right. Women who have had STDs are at increased risk for infertility, AIDS, and cervical cancer. To learn more about the long term health risks associated with particular STDs, check out Nothing But the Facts. 3. Experts call which of the following bacterial STDs "the silent epidemic"? a) scabies b) Chlamydia <-- correct answer c) trichomoniasis The bacterial STD chlamydia has been called a "silent epidemic" because 75% of women and 50% of men with the disease experience no symptoms. It's especially prevalent among young people. Untreated chlamydial infections in women often result in another "silent epidemic" pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
a leading cause of infertility. To learn more about chlamydia, see Nothing But the Facts. 4. Which of the following groups is at greatest risk for STDs? a) men under 25 b) women under 25 <-- correct answer c) men The highest rates of STD infection occur among women 15 to 19 years of age. People under 25 who have had more than one sexual partner are at highest risk for STDs, but people of all ages, ethnicities, and income levels can be affected. 5. When asked to name the greatest obstacle they face in trying to protect themselves against STDs, people most often cite: a) carelessness <-- your answer b) ignorance c) self-consciousness <-- correct answer People of all ages cite embarrassment or selfconsciousness as the greatest obstacle they face in trying to protect themselves against STDs. If you?re one of those people who find such topics Unspeakable, click on this link to learn how to talk about safer sex and STDs. 6. Experts now recommend that young people be immunized against what STD? a) chlamydia b) herpes c) hepatitis B <-- correct answer The Centers for Disease Control currently recommend that all adolescents be immunized against hepatitis B. It's also part of the new standards for pediatric immunization, so it's important to make sure that your young children are immunized. The vaccine is given in the arm, in three doses. It's important to get all three shots, and advisable for teens to do so before they become sexually active and risk exposure
to the disease. See Nothing But the Facts for more information about hepatitis B. No vaccines are currently available for chlamydia or herpes. 7. Which of the following STDs can be cured? a) herpes b) gonorrhea <-- correct answer c) genital warts Gonorrhea is usually easy to cure with antibiotics. Herpes and genital warts, while treatable, are chronic viral infections and are not curable. Proper management of herpes and genital warts, however, can help minimize or even alleviate symptoms. If you've been infected with herpes or genital warts, you're not alone, and there is hope. Millions of people have been able to keep their symptoms under control. 8. The most common symptom of STD infection in women is: a) vaginal discharge <-- your answer b) sores and/or blisters in the genital region c) no symptoms <-- correct answer It's estimated that from 10 to 20% of men with STDs and 75% of women with STDs experience no symptoms. So you can be infected and not even know it. See Sore Subjects to learn more about some of the noticeable symptoms of STDs. 9. You may be at increased risk for HIV/AIDS if: a) you have had many sex partners in the last 10 years <-- correct answer b) you have given blood at a blood bank or blood collection center c) you have eaten food prepared by a person infected with HIV You can't get HIV/AIDs from giving blood or eating food prepared by a person infected with HIV Having multiple sex partners however
can increase the chance that you may be exposed to HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. To learn more about how HIV/AIDS is transmitted, check out Nothing But the Facts. 10. The best form of protection against STDs during sex is: a) spermicides b) condoms, used correctly all the time <-- correct answer c) the pill, Norplant, and Depo-Provera Condoms (male and female) are still the best form of protection for anal, oral, and vaginal sex. But even condoms can?t protect you against every STD. Condoms can?t always protect you against herpes, for example. Spermicides have been shown to kill some of the germs that cause STDs, so its a good idea to use them with condoms for extra protection. The pill, Norplant, and Depo-Provera are only methods of birth control. They offer no protection against sexually transmitted diseases. Got more questions? Take a look at FAQ.
