2 Goals and Contexts I am pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Community and Human Services with a concentration in Health and Human Services administration. I am compassionate about helping people and I feel the healthcare field will best suit my needs. I would like to pursue a position within a healthcare setting such as a hospital or physicians office. This will provide experience that I will need to become proficient in my profession. In the end result I hope to have gained enough knowledge and experience within my field that I can start my own healthcare clinic. Professional Expectations After doing research I found in occupational outlook handbook, edition that my career field in healthcare management requires a bachelor s degree and you will need a master s degree if you work at a hospital. If you want to advance to department head or chief executive officer you have to have a master s degree and previous work experience. A license may be needed if you want to work in a nursing care facility or an assisted-living facility. Health care managers must have knowledge of management principles and practices. A master's degree in health services administration or business administration is required for most positions in this field. A bachelor's degree is acceptable for entry-level positions at small locations within healthcare management but a master's degree in health services administration or a related field is needed to advance further. Some graduate schools want students with a bachelor s degree in business or health administration. The suggested coursework for students wanting to enter the healthcare field are human resources administration, hospital organization and management, accounting and budgeting, strategic planning, law and ethics, health economics, health information systems, and marketing. A healthcare manager is required to know finance and information systems and interpret data. They must have strong leadership and communication 2

3 skills. The O-net online suggest having knowledge of personal and human resources, administration and management, customer and personal service, and economics and accounting. The skills I should possess are time management, critical thinking, judgment and decision making, and reading comprehension. I have met some of these requirements with the courses I have previously taken at LaGuardia Community College. Healthcare manager s positions are projected to be the fastest growing with many jobs going to people that have work experience in the healthcare field and business management. The healthcare field will require managers to run the operations. Employment in hospitals will be slow because of the increase of needed positions in clinics. I will try to obtain a job in a smaller facility because of the available positions so I can gain the experience needed to advance in my field. The college courses I have chosen to take at Empire State College that will address current and future professional expectations are Legal and Ethical Issues in Health Services, Community Health, The United States Health Systems, Management and Health Services, Economic Issues in Health Services, Case Management, Issues in Health Policy and Management, The Third Sector: Not-for-Profits in the United States, Health, Illness and Society, and Introduction to Human Services. I believe the classes I have chosen address both the management and healthcare aspect of my field and will provide me with the knowledge I need to be successful in my career. Area of Study Guidelines The area of study guidelines for community and human services has four key elements that need to be addressed. They include knowledge, skills, attitudes and values, and experience, applications and practice. I believe taking Community Health, Families: A Global Perspective, 3

4 and Introduction to Human Services courses will give me the knowledge needed to be able to relate to the society as a whole. These classes will enhance my understanding of how to deliver effective services to the society and how to be compassionate to ones situation. To address the skills area I intend on taking Management of Health Services, Grief and Loss, and Family Violence and Abuse. This will provide me the skills necessary to work within the health services field and give me the skills to work with individuals experiencing stress in their lives. The attitudes and values will be addressed by taking Legal and Ethical Issues in Health Services, and Economic Issues in Health Services. This will demonstrate my ability to address ethical issues within the health services field. The experience, application and practice will be addressed by taking Case Management, The United States Health Systems, Issues in Health Policy and Management, and The Third Sector: Not-for-Profits in the United States. These classes will help me understand the depth of the health services, and how certain aspects of the field come to together to form a whole. SUNY General Education I have met 7 of the required 10 general education requirements. At LaGuardia Community College I took Composition I which satisfies the basic communication requirement, and Writing Thru Literature that satisfies the humanities requirement. At SUNY, Empire State College to satisfy the social science requirement I have taken Infant and Toddler Development, and Human Nutrition to meet the natural science requirement. To meet the additional 6 requirements I plan on taking Introductory Spanish: Language and Culture for foreign language, Algebra for mathematics, American Ethnic History for American history, Families: A Global Perspective for other world civilization, and Images of Women in Western Civilization that satisfy western civilization and the arts. To address the Educational Planning requirement at 4

5 SUNY, Empire State College I took 21 st Century Careers and Planning and Finalizing the Degree to fulfill the requirement. Conclusion I feel I have researched enough to know that a Bachelor s degree will enhance my current career field and by obtaining a Master s degree, I may be able to branch out in other areas related to Human Services and Health Care. I feel the courses I have chosen at SUNY Empire State College to complete my degree give me a well rounded education in this field. My main focus in the next few years will be completing the more core courses concerning the health care field. The courses I have taken, added to the courses I have chosen at SUNY Empire State College, added to my work and volunteer experience will round out my education in an effort to be viewed as an expert in my field, which is my ultimate goal. 5
