Study Guide This study guide was written in order help teachers prepare their students for any potential visits from South Asian Arts. It gives a brief biography of who and what South Asian Arts is, as well as a detailed description of what we will be presenting. The focus of our workshop will be on one of the most popular folk dances of India called Bhangra. Our main objective will be to give our audience a glimpse of what this dance form looks like and also an opportunity to learn what it is. We will teach workshops encompassing traditional Bhangra moves, costumes and music, but the highlight of the day will be a performance by the senior students themselves, incorporating both dance and music, in the form of drumming and other folk instruments. The performance will possess some of the elements discussed in this study guide. The purpose of this study guide is to help you better enjoy our workshop by giving you some background information. We hope that this information will assist you and your students in learning more about the dance form or Bhangra
Biography Raakhi Sinha and Gurpreet Sian are the co-founders of South Asian Arts, which provides high quality instruction in South Asian classical and folk dances, aerobics classes, as well as musical and vocal classes. The arts of south Asia are rich in culture and the music and dance go hand in hand to recreate the rituals of our ancestors, keeping our culture and tradition alive through disciplined art. Students will have many opportunities to enjoy themselves and broaden their cultural understanding in all aspects of south Asian art. Raakhi has been dancing her whole life. At the age of 8 years old, she began her training in the classical Indian dance called Bharatnatyam, and in 1998 she completed her Arengetram (graduation). She has done many local classical solo performances. Her classical exposure also extends to Kathak, which she is currently training in and plans to complete in the coming years. She also has about 15 years of experience in Dandiya/Raas, which is the traditional folk dance of Gujarat. Raakhi has competed nationally on very successful teams, both as a Garba dancer and a Bhangra dancer, as well as a choreographer. Gurpreet began playing dhol/dholki over 10 years ago and has been teaching group and private lessons for the last 5. Having a passion for the arts, he has participated in international Bhangra competitions with the award winning VIBE dance team and also United Bhangra. He also plays Dhol for the hit pop Bhangra group Signia, as well as with a local brass band called Surya Brass Band. Gurpreet has also danced in many music videos and movies, as well as taught Bhangra workshops to adults and kids during festival times throughout the lower mainland. He has always taken an active interest in the community through his positive influence on south Asian kids. On the hit multicultural show "Punjabi Vibes", Gurpreet, along with the two other hosts, often focus on pressing youth issues. From , both Raakhi and Gurpreet were members of a competitive Bhangra team called VIBE, with whom they had the opportunity to travel all across North America to cites such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington, New York, Chicago, Florida, Miami, and Montreal. With VIBE, they finished in the top three in 14 out the 19 Bhangra competitions they entered, winning 9. Having recently left the world of Bhangra competitions as dancers themselves, they now wish to educate others of this dance form. They have presented numerous workshops from their Vancouver studio as well as at the Folk and Children s festivals in Vancouver and Surrey
What Is Bhangra? Bhangra (pron. Pung-rah) is a lively form of folk music and dance that originates from the northern Indian state of Punjab. People traditionally performed Bhangra when celebrating the end of the harvesting season, which is also known as Vaisakhi. Vaisakhi is a huge celebration in Punjab which also marks the birth of Sikhism. During Bhangra, people sing Punjabi Boliyan (poetic lyrics), with at least one person playing the Dhol drum, with others playing the flute, Dholak drum, or other musical instruments. While Bhangra began as a part of the harvest festival celebrations, it eventually became a part of such diverse occasions as weddings and New Year celebrations. Moreover, during the last thirty years, Bhangra has enjoyed a surge in popularity worldwide, both in traditional form and as a fusion with genres such as hiphop, house, and reggae. As Bhangra continues to move into mainstream culture, an understanding of its history and tradition helps to appreciate it. It is believed that Bhangra originated in the 1400s. Primarily men performed Bhangra, while the ladies performed their own fierce, yet elegant folk dance called Giddha. The men wore the turban, lungi (long cloth wrapped around the waist), and kurta (traditional long Indian shirt). While performing Giddha, women wore the salwaar kameez (a long colorful shirt accompanied with baggy style pants) accompanied by their bright colored duppattas (scarf-like cloth wrapped around the neck). Nowadays, because of Punjabi influence worldwide, people perform Bhangra in all parts of the world at occasions such as weddings and other occasions of celebration. Bhangra has evolved from a dance and music only performed in the Punjab region to a popular style of music and dance that people perform throughout South Asia and many parts of the world. Bhangra is truly becoming more popular worldwide and people of non-punjabi background are listening to and performing Bhangra. Universities and other organizations are holding annual Bhangra dance competitions in many of the main cities of the United States, Canada, and England. At these competitions, people from different South Asian backgrounds and people with no South Asian background all compete together for the top prize and also bragging rites. It is evident that every year Bhangra becomes more popular and well known among many different types of people worldwide. Influences of Bhangra music can also be found in the music produced by many western artists, such as Britney Spears, Timbaland, Missy Eliot, Nelly Furtado, Dr. Dre, and many more
Description of Performance/Event and Notes for Audience South Asian Arts hands-on drumming and dance workshops centre on the hard beats and energetic style found in the Northern Indian dance style called Bhangra. The day starts off with an introduction to some simple dance steps as well as a few essential instruments found in Bhangra music, with the focus being on the Dhol drum. All students at the school will learn some age-appropriate drumming and dancing, with a performance at the end of the day by the group of older students. Through music and dance, South Asian Arts believes students will build their understanding and appreciation for art and culture, as well as self-confidence and self-discipline in a fun and interactive atmosphere. On the day of the workshop, after introducing ourselves, we will give a quick overview of what we will be doing during our demonstration, which is as follows: 1. Brief history of Bhangra 2. Introduction of dance moves, drum beats, singing in small groups (age dependent) 3. 2 minute Bhangra demonstration by Raakhi & Gurpreet at the end of the day 4. Dance performance by the senior students at the end of the day 5. Question & Answer A brief history of Bhangra will be given and students will get the opportunity to understand the storylines of the songs and the key movements to pay attention to in the performance. The history will include the geographical origins of Bhangra, the defining features of Bhangra, traditional costuming, and musical instruments. Western influences will be brought to light in regards to the change over the years of the dance style and how it might continue to change. After the big performance at the end of the day by the senior students, we will review similarities and differences between Indian dance and other dance forms (e.g. Irish dancing, hip-hop, and reggae). And depending on how much time there is available, two volunteers will also get the opportunity to wear a traditional female and male Bhangra costume. Overview: Students will see Indian folk dance called Bhangra. The Bhangra workshops will definitely be loud and very high energy. Workshop length will be approximately 30 minutes per group, where each group is of a particular grade. Technical Requirements CD Player 1 Microphone (2 if possible) if performing in gymnasium for large audience 1 Dressing Room 2 chairs minutes of preparation time Performance space of about 20 ft. wide by 10 ft. deep is sufficient (not including audience seating). School gyms and stages are fine
Activities for Students & Teachers (before or after demonstration) Indian dance is about story telling through movement of your body. Students can do a variety of different things to prepare for our visit. Search through a map of India. Where is Punjab? Brainstorm names of Bhangra music artists: Jazzy B, Malkit Singh, Surjit Bindrakhia, Lembher Hussainpuri, Sukshinder Shinda, Harbhajan Maan, Gurdas Maan. When listening to the music try to identify fast beats, slow beats, signature beats to each type of music. Isolate the Dhol drum, Tumbi, and melody lines. When does the beat change? How many different beats can you find in one piece? What kind of dance moves can the students think of that would act out an activity. What would a move that would show the sky look like? What would a move that would display cutting the crops look like? Moving a herd of cows? Think simple big movements. Play a game called Freeze Bhangra. It s sort of like musical chairs. When the music goes on, everyone has to dance. When the music goes off, everyone must freeze. Whoever doesn t freeze sits off to the side until game is over. This is probably more suitable for younger children

Bhangra Instruments & Props Dhol (pron. Dole) A two-sided Indian drum. One side for bass (usually made from goat skin), the other for treble (nowadays, the snare head of a drum is used). The Dholi (dole-ee) plays the Dhol with two different types of wooden sticks called Dagga (dug-ah) & Tilli (tee-lee). The Dagga is used for the bass side, and the Tilli for the treble. Chimta (Chim-tah) A large barbeque tong-like instrument, with small symbols on it, like a tambourine. Played by shaking it to the beat of the Dhol drum. The long flat pieces of iron have pointed ends. The instrument in held in one hand and the two parts are struck together to produce a tinkling sound. Sap (Sup) The word Sap literally means snake. Saps are wooden criss-cross that can be opened and closed while dancing. They are also played to the beat of the Dhol and produce a clapping sound. Tumbi (Toom-bee) A Single-stringed instrument. It is a famous folk instrument of Punjab made with a wooden stick mounted to a Toomba (wooden resonator covered with skin). The single string is struck with a finger and different sounds are created by pressing the string down onto the stick, much like a guitar. Algoja (Al-go-jay) A pair of traditional Indian flutes which are played together. One person plays them both at the same time with only three fingers on each side. Koondi (Koon-dee) A large wooden stick with a hook on the end. Used to symbolize a Gundasa (Gun-da-sa), which is a large bush-cutting blade. Traditional Bhangra Moves There are some basic moves in Bhangra. These are a set of moves that define Bhangra and are the most common ones done when the dance was first originated. Bhangra (Pung-rah) This is the most common move you have probably seen. People are always doing this move when dancing. Both hands are up in air, and the arms and legs are both bending and bouncing to the beat of the music. Luddi (Loo-dee) Here you see the knees are bent and the hands are gracefully "ticking" from left to right with the beat. Note the detail of the pointer finger and thumb touching (making cheerios ), and the other fingers are flat and close together
Shala (Shah-lah) Wow!!! They must be happy. Yet another fun Bhangra move. You jump up in the air with both feet and simultaneously throw your arms in the air and kick your legs back as if jumping for joy. Dhamal (Tuh-maal) While the dholi plays the dhamal beat, the dancer, with both arms in the air, hops on one foot for 4 beats, then switches to the other foot and hops for 4 beats on that foot. Repeat until the beat changes. Jhumar (Chooh-mur) This is a slow, but powerful move. One hand (usually the right) is in the air, once again with the pointer finger and thumb touching (making cheerios ), while you hop on your heel, alternating feet on each beat and simultaneously giving your shoulders a quick, sharp shrug. A variation is with both hands in the air. Mirza (Mirr-za) Another slow move, which is very much like the jhumar. Both hands are again up, with the same foot and shoulder motion as the jhumar. But, after doing a hop once on each foot, on the third beat, you swing your arms to the side, bringing them back to the front on the fourth beat to end with a clap. Keep repeating until the beat changes. Thappi (Thah-pee) If you like simple moves, then this one is for you. Males typically do this move. Basically, you cup your hand and slap the inside of your thigh. It is a way for men to express their manliness. Bhangra Costumes Men Pag (Pug) A turban. The Pug holds a very special meaning in Punjab it is a sign of pride and honor. And so, in Bhangra, touching the Pug with your feet or throwing it is considered very disrespectful. Turla (Turr-laa) A starched fan on top of the front of the turban Kurta (Kurr-taa) A traditional long Indian shirt. Chadra (Chaa-duh-raa) A long cloth tied around the waist. Vest Usually a different material than the Kurta and a contrasting color, it is adorned with embroidery and sequins. Women Dupatta (Doo-putt-ta) A scarf-like cloth wrapped around the neck. Salwar & Kameez (Sul-var & Ku-meez) A long colorful shirt with a baggy style pant. Loongi (Loon-gee) Like the Chadra for men, a long cloth wrapped around the waist. Tikka (Tik-ah) Accessory worn on the forehead in between the eyes. Paranda (Puh-run-da) A long braid tassel
