1 Studies in 1 Corinthians and Ephesians DEDUCTIVE LESSON SIXTEEN 1 Corinthians 16 Day One: Verses 1 4 Read 1 Corinthians 16:1 4 and answer the following questions. 1. In these verses, Paul gives instruction regarding the collection of offerings for the church. On what day is the offering to be collected and how much is to be given? 2. Giving to the church is an important part of worshipping the Lord and being part of the Body of Christ. Withholding our tithes and offerings is serious; what does God call it in Malachi 3:8 9? 3. What are we challenged to do in the next verse (Malachi 3:10) and what is the result of accepting that challenge? 4. Read Mark 12: What does it tell us about giving sacrificially? 5. What truths about giving to the Lord are found in 2 Corinthians 9:6 14? 1

2 6. Pray and ask the Lord to give you boldness in stepping out in faith when it comes to your finances. Ask Him to make you a cheerful and generous giver. To help with this, make a quick list of some of the many blessings He has given to you. Let all that you do be done with love. 1 Corinthians 16:13 14 Day Two: Verses 5 12 Read 1 Corinthians 16:5 12 and answer the following questions. 1. What are Paul s plans in verses 5 7? 2. Where is Paul writing from and what is happening there (verse 8)? 3. Did you notice that Paul did not say, I am leaving Ephesus as soon as I can, for there are many adversaries here? Paul saw adversaries as opportunities! What did Jesus say in Matthew 5:44 45? 2

3 4. The great and effective door of ministry that Paul mentions is described better for us by Luke in Acts 19:1 20. What are some of the highlights from that account? 5. Paul tells the Corinthians not to let anyone despise Timothy. Why might someone despise him? How did Paul advise Timothy to combat such criticism (1 Timothy 4:12)? Let all that you do be done with. Corinthians : Day Four: Verses Today s verses mention Aquila and Priscilla, a godly married couple who are mentioned elsewhere in Scripture. Under what circumstances did Paul first meet this couple (Acts 18:1 3)? 4

5 2. What does Acts 18:18 19 mention about Priscilla and Aquila? 3. What role did this couple play in the life of Apollos (Acts 18:24 28)? 4. What did Paul say about Priscilla and Aquila in Romans 16:3 5? 5. In the verses above, we read how Priscilla and Aquila took Apollos aside and instructed him more accurately in the ways of the Lord. This mentoring act on their part was beneficial to Apollos and his ministry, but his fervency, zeal, and eloquence in the Scriptures must surely have been an encouragement to them as well. God purposely brings younger Christians together with those who are more mature for their mutual benefit. Do you have someone you look up to as a spiritual mentor? In addition, is there someone whom you are mentoring and discipling in the Lord? If the answer to either of these questions is no, ask the Lord to bring you into these relationships so that you can both help and be helped by your fellow Christians. If the answer to both is yes, thank the Lord right now for these individuals and pray for them. Record your prayer below. 6 Day Five: Verses Terms and Definitions: Maranatha! In Paul s farewell, he uses the Aramaic word Maranatha! which is translated O Lord, come! (verse 22) and is found nowhere else in Scripture. The meaning seems to be, Our Lord is coming soon, and He will judge all those who do not love Him. The fact that Paul used an Aramaic expression in addressing the Gentile Christians of Corinth indicates that maranatha had become a familiar expression of Christian hope a watchword of the imminent Second Coming of the Lord. 1 Let s take a look at Christ s second coming, described for us in Revelation At Christ s first coming, His triumphal entry was on the back of a lowly donkey (see Matthew 21:7 9). What will He ride at His second coming, what is He called, and why does He come (Revelation 19:11)? 2. Describe His appearance in Revelation 19: Who will be with Him (19:14)? 4. What actions will Jesus take (19:15)? 5. What is His title in verse 16? 6. Describe the battle in Revelation 19:
