1 15 Days Public Awareness Event About Nuclear Energy "Slogan Competition on Nuclear Energy" in 12 Schools & Colleges Lucknow, December 20, January 5, 2012

2 Slogan Writing Competition on Nuclear Energy Awareness The requirement of energy in India is bound to increase manifold in the coming years. Electricity and energy are essential requirements in every corner of the country. For increasing the availability of electricity, its conservation is as important as the use of other sources of producing electricity, since the availability of coal and other natural resources is not limitless and their availability shall reduce over the years. Because of this, the use of other sources like wind, solar and nuclear to produce electricity is being encouraged. Among these is nuclear energy. Many nuclear power production stations are already operating in India for years, while many are under construction. Students participating in slogan writing competition, Lucknow An inter-college slogan writing competition on the topic New Year New Energy was organized in Lucknow to create awareness about new sources of energy. The competition

3 was organized by MCRF (Media & Communication Research Foundation) as part of a campaign to promote clean and environment friendly sources of electricity production. Students participating in slogan writing competition, Lucknow About 900 entries were received from a dozen colleges in the first phase of the competition, between December 19 and 28. The second phase will be taken up after the winter break in more colleges of the city. The colleges from where students entries were collected are: Netaji Subhash Girls Degree College, Aliganj, Hazari Lal Inter College, Aliganj, Saraswati Vidya Mandir Inter College, Aliganj, Saraswati Vidya Mandir Inter College, Niralanagar, Dayanand Girls Inter College, Mahanagar, Hoerner College, Mahanagar, Baba Thakurdas Inter College, Ghasiari Mandi, Pioneer Montessori Inter College, Rajendranagar, Lucknow Model Public Inter College, Manaknagar, Lucknow Montessori Inter College, Sadar, Shri Guru Nanak Girls Degree College, Bans Mandi, and Balika Vidyalaya Inter College, Motinagar.

4 The slogans displayed wide awareness about different sources of energy. Participating students showed their knowledge about solar, nuclear, alternative and renewable energy and they used catchy phrases and words to drive home the message about using energy sources other than coal (thermal) and water (hydro). One of the judges, Dr R. Roy Choudhury, eminent environmental scientist and director Jaiviki Institute, engaged in research on organic and biotech products, said it was heartening to see students level of knowledge and it was a sure sign that energy conservation, environment protection and use of clean energy were much better understood subjects now. Other judges were Ms Shikha Lal, social worker

5 and secretary of MCRF, and Mr Ram Krishna, journalist. Prizes, including the comic Ek tha Budhiya and Budhiya ki sair were given to the winners in their schools. An exhibition of the selected entries and a felicitation of the winning students shall be organized after the schools reopen. The competition is part of the campaign supported by Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited to create awareness about nuclear energy. As part of this campaign, painting competition, film shows, quiz contests, discussions and exhibitions have been organized at many places besides Lucknow. Among the activities planned in the new year are an essay contest, run for energy, poster making and exhibition, besides film shows. The competition has been organized in collaboration with Gujarati Science College, Indore.
