5 Additional Information - BESSER TM Mortar and Mortar Joints The three principal functions of mortar are: 1.To provide an even bedding for the blocks and allow even course levels by taking up small variations in block height. 2.To transmit compressive loads. 3. To hold the blocks together in the wall by bonding to them, so that tensile and shear forces can be carried. (This is often referred to as a bond strength ). This is particularly important so that blocks on top of a wall are not easily dislodged. In order to provide a good bond between the blocks and the mortar, the following guidelines should be followed. An appropriate mortar mix design should be selected - see table below. The mortar should be batched accurately using some consistent form of volume measurement,e.g. 1/2 bag cement, 1/2 bag of lime and 18 shovels of sand for a 1:1:6 mix. The sand used in the mortar should be clean pit sand, masonry sand or plasterers sand. Clayey loam or sand containing organic impurities will affect the mortar strength and should not be used. Mortar should be discarded and not retempered, after the initial set of the cement has taken place. Admixtures. Caution should be exercised when using lime replacing additives such as plasticizers or workability agents. They should only be used if specified by the architect or engineer and then strictly in accordance with manufacturers instructions. Detergent should never be used. Mortar Class Cement (GB/GP) Mix Proportions by Volume Masonry Cement Building Lime Sand Methyl Cellulose added (see notes) Where Used M Optional General purpose application with moderate exposure including: All general purpose blockwork above the DPC. Blockwork within 1km of an industry in which chemical pollutants are produced. Note: Methyl Cellulose water thickener is used to prevent the rapid drying out of the mortar thus improving its workability as well as increasing bond strength. It does not have the detrimental effect of the plasticizers. It is available under the trade name of DYNEX or similar. 6 Codes of Practice Adbri Masonry Concrete masonry is manufactured in accordance with the Provisions of Australian AS/NZ4455 Masonry Units and segmental pavers. It is recommended that design, drawing practice and construction be carried out in accordance with AS 3700:1 the Masonry Structures. Modular Planning The dimensions of masonry units are based on the 100mm module. The actual size of units in this catalogue are in all cases 10mm smaller than their normal size to allow joint thickness. For example, a block having an actual length of 3mm will be classified as having a nominal length of mm. Block Laying Dry units are essential. Blocks should never be wet prior to application of mortar. Blocks should be kept dry when stored on site before use. Whenever work is stopped, the tops of walls should be covered to prevent moisture entering the cores of the blocks. Blocks should be laid with the thickest shell uppermost. Care shall be taken not to allow mortar to drop into cores if core is to be grouted. Jointing The mortar squeezed from the joints should be stuck off flush with the wall as each block is laid. When the mortar has stiffened and is firm to the touch, it should be firmly compacted with an ironing tool. The compactness is important since mortar, when hardening, has a tendency to shrink slightly. Control Joints When required, the joints should be located: (a) at major changes in wall height (b) at changes in wall thickness other than for piers and buttresses, (c) at control joints in footings, in roof and in floors, (d) at chases and recesses for pipings, columns, fixtures, etc (e) at one or both sides of wall openings, (f) near wall intersections (g) near return angles in L, T and U shaped structures. Wall Ties Wall ties for cavity walls should be provided in accordance with AS 3700:1. Bond Beams A bond beam is a continuous beam around the exterior of a building for the purpose of providing lateral stability to the walls, and to minimise the possibility of shrinkage cracking at openings. Bond beam blocks should be filled with concrete or grout as specified and suitable reinforcing stell. Reinforcement should be not less than one N16mm diameter bar, in accordance with CMAA single Leaf Design Manual MA47. Flashing In cavity walls, flashing shall be placed at an angle across the cavity to discharge moisture towards weep holes. Turn up ends to prevent moisture draining into cavities. Flashing and capping should be provided to the tops of all parapets. Cleaning Care should be taken during construction of masonry walls to prevent excess mortar being smeared over the face of the blocks. Finished walls should be cleaned down after the mortar has hardened by rubbing with a piece of block or carborundum stone, wire brushing where necessary. Acid must not be used for cleaning concrete masonry walls, unless used in accordance with CMAA Concrete Masonry Handbook MA45.
