1 October 4, 2015 Exodus 3: 1-15 Old-fashioned living This sermon was preached by Pastor Jim Page at Trinity Lutheran Church What do you have that is old? How we regard something as old depends on the item and our recognition in how useful an item is. There s old running shoes, old bread that has a spot of mold on it, an old computer. My grandparents lived through the depression and they held on to a lot of things old wasn t a word in their vocabulary. My mother and her sisters would try and get my grandmother to wear the new dresses they d buy her. The matriarch of the family would respond, My dresses aren t old. There s no holes in them. They re clean. They re just fine. If it s not a rare antique or an item that has sentimental value I assume many of us do not own a lot of old things. The apostle Paul wrote the following near the end of his letter to the Romans, in these words he s referring to the ancient writings that we call the Old Testament. He wrote, For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. (Romans 15:4) Our recognition of the Bible is shaped by an evolving mindset where what we regard as old will have little, if any, influence on the here and now. Look around at our society, it s all about the new and improved, a new television series starting this fall or a new product that ll make your life better. What happens is that the message and pursuit of what is new often leads us to discredit valuable wisdom from what is old and in the past. My point is this: when we bypass the old and what we have learned from the past we often experience regret. Regret takes on many forms. You know you should save your money but then you go out and spend your money with little discretion; you regret that your money is gone with little to show for it. You know you should ve calmed down before speaking when that person made you mad. You didn t, and now you regret what you said. American author and satirist, Kurt Vonnegut wrote the following, Of all the words of mice and men, the saddest are, It might have been. (Cat s Cradle, 1963) Regret removes our happiness, it fosters guilt in ourselves and limits God s presence upon our lives. All are contrary to God s purpose for our lives and in one story at the beginning of Exodus, we see how God doesn t hold anything back in seeking to overcome our regrets for something better. The story is about one man who lived with overwhelming regret, his name was Moses. Moses is a well-known person in the Old Testament. From the video you just saw, you were likely reminded of things you learned from Sunday school. There is a detail of Moses life that is often overlooked; glossed over with little recognition. It s so shocking that it s hard to believe it even happened. It s described near the beginning of Exodus, in chapter two: One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people. Looking this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. (Exodus 2:11-12)
2 Moses was a 40 year old murderer. Later on, two Hebrews were fighting and after Moses tried to intervene, they accused him of killing an Egyptian. The word was out about him. If Pharaoh s soldiers caught him, Pharaoh would certainly kill him. He fled for his life. He flees to an area known as Midian where he eventually marries one of the priest of Midian s daughters. He lives in hiding for 40 years until something unique happened to him. Scripture tell us that one day he led the flock beyond the wilderness to Horeb, which became known as the mountain of God. The area there has no grass, it s barren, there s gravel and it s very hot. God s people, the Israelites, have been in slavery for 400 years and Moses has lived in hiding for 40 years. It was just a typical day until Moses sees a bush start on fire. He likely didn t think anything of it until he realized it wasn t burning up. He obviously was curious. When he turned to look, God called from the bush Moses, Moses! And he said, Here I am. Then God said, Come no closer. I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. (Exodus 3:4-5a,6) In that moment, Moses likely thought, He found me! His heart racing, eyes open wide that the God of creation, the God of his ancestors was speaking to him! It had been 400 years! Certainly God knew about the murder in the past. Judgment day was now here for Moses! God says, I have observed the misery of my people. I have heard their cry So come, I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people out of Egypt. (Exodus 3:7,10) Pause. Let s think about this-he s 80 years old. I don t want to generalize but people in their 80 s have wisdom in their old age but they can be set in their ways, kind of stubborn, resistant to change. In his old age, Moses resists God saying such things as: Who am I to go to Pharaoh? I don t speak eloquently. What if they don t believe me? All Moses could see was the current circumstances; in this series we call that recognition the lower story. If we re honest with ourselves, we are not all that different from Moses. We have regrets from the past. We often prefer to do our own thing each day and place God on the backburner. How many of us often say or think no when asked to do something that will further God s presence in the lives of others since it ll require something of us? What scripture shows us today is that God never accepts things the way they are. God never accepts life the way it is. God s plan is to bring about new life in surprising ways that often shatter our expectations of what always has been. God s vision is what we call the upper story. For Moses, God was present in that burning bush on a regular day. You won t have a burning bush today, but you know where God is present today? God is present when you re sitting at your desk at work; when you re fixing supper at home; when you re waiting in the doctor s office. At work, at home, anywhere you are God is saying I can use you for something good. This old story of Moses is still happening every day of your life. Whatever your past has been; whatever regrets you have; whatever it is that separates you from God that is
3 nothing compared to God s forgiveness and love for you. Aware of God s goodness, Moses said a statement that changed the course of human history. The statement affirmed his new relationship with God. All he said was: Here I am. Words of acceptance of the love and forgiveness of God. Words to live under God s guidance. In your life, that is all God needs you to say: Here I am. As a Christian, a follower of Christ and child of God: 1) Never believe God is through doing great things that you have never imagined. 2) Never think that God is through doing great things through you. Moses would be assisted by his brother Aaron. They gathered the leaders of the Israelites to tell them what they were about to do under God s direction. The people s response was simply awesome: The people believed; and when they heard that the Lord had given heed to the Israelites and that he had seen their misery, they bowed down and worshipped. (Exodus 4:31) This isn t in the scripture, but when Moses went to bed that night, I believe he had a tear in his eye at the thought of God s love for him where his regrets were gone. The thought of God s love that would bring goodness and hope to all people. Imagine what God could do in our homes, our places of employment, our schools, everywhere if we live like Moses with a willingness to follow God with a simple, Here I am, Lord. Yes, following God may make you feel like a minority against the majority of people around you. Imagine what God can yet do if we say to God: Here I am, Lord I ll forgive as you forgave me. Here I am, Lord to accept all people even those who live and believe differently than I do. Here I am, Lord to speak about my faith with my children at home. Here I am, Lord to be the best employee I can be at the job you ve given me. Amen.
