But after George has an accident, he forgets all about his job and heads to the water to have some fun! 2 Newspapers Build Background Have children share any experiences they have had doing a job at home or at school. Read the title and talk about the cover illustration. Ask children what they know about the fictional character, Curious George. Build interest by asking questions such as the following: What do you think Curious George is doing at the pond? Why might Curious George have so many newspapers? Introduce the Text Guide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions: Pages 2-3: Explain that in this story the fi ctional monkey named Curious George has a job. Because this is a make believe story, Curious George can do things that people can do, such as ride a bike or do a job. Suggested language: Turn to page 2. What do you learn about George from the pictures on pages 2 and 3? What might George do with the bag of newspapers? Page 4: Remind children that they can use information in the pictures to help them read. What is George s job? Pages 5-6: Turn to page 5. What is happening here? The book says: Then his bike hit a rock. What might happen next? Now look at the illustration on page 6. The book says: His bike broke! Say the word broke. What letter would you expect to see fi rst in the word broke? Find the word broke and put your fi nger under it. How does George feel about what happened to his bike? How can you tell? Page 7: On page 7, a man with a box of tools fi xes George s bike. Can you see the tools in the picture? Say the word tools. What letter would you expect to see fi rst in the word tools? Find the word tools and put your fi nger under it. What should George do now? Why do you think that? Now go back to the beginning and read to fi nd out what happens to Curious George and the newspapers. 3 Read As children read Newspapers, observe them carefully. Guide them as needed, using language that supports their problem solving ability. Respond to the Text Personal Response Ask children to share their personal responses to the story. Begin by asking what they liked best about the story, or what they found interesting. Suggested language: Do you think Curious George did his job well? Why or why not? Ways of Thinking As you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points: Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text Curious George likes to ride his bike. He gets a job riding his bike and giving newspapers to people. Curious George forgets about his job after he falls off his bike. He rides his bike to the pond and turns the papers into boats. A job is a responsibility. Sometimes accidents happen that can be upsetting. It is important to finish doing any job. The author creates the story problem by having Curious George fall off his bike. The setting is a familiar one to most children. The author has created an anthropomorphic animal that children can relate to Fountas, I.C. & Pinnell, G.S. Teaching for Comprehending and Fluency, Heinemann, Portsmouth, N.H. Choices for Support Fluency Have children choose a page to read aloud. Point out that this story includes many sentences with exclamation points, so children should be aware of end punctuation so that they can read those exclamatory sentences with strong feeling. Phonemic Awareness and Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities: Add Endings Materials: whiteboards, markers. Have children add the ending -ing to each of these story words: hit, cry, fi nish, sail, put. Ask them to read the new words and use each of them in a sentence. Rhyming Game Have children listen for words that rhyme. Have children raise their hands if the words rhyme, and keep their hands in their laps if the words do not rhyme. 4 Writing About Reading Critical Thinking Read the directions for children on BLM 28.8 and guide them in answering the questions. Responding Read aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities. Target Comprehension Skill Story Structure Tell children that it is important to think about who the story is about, where the story happens, and what happens. Model how to think about the story structure. Think Aloud Who is the story about? The story is about Curious George. Where does the story take place? The story takes place in George s neighborhood. What happens in the story? George rides his bike and hands out newspapers. Then his bike hits a rock. A man with tools fixes George s bike so he can finish his job now. But he forgets about his job. He rides to the pond and makes boats out of the newspapers. Practice the Skill Have children think of another story. Have them use the words who, where, and what to tell about the characters, setting, and events in the story. Writing Prompt Read aloud the following prompt. Have children write their response, using the writing prompt on page 6. What advice would you give George the next time he has a job to do?
