1 General Function: Set up and operate numerically controlled machines to perform series of machining operations, such as turning, milling, boring, threading and facing on parts according to work instructions and procedures to assure Belvac s quality of work is upheld. Physical Requirements: Requires long periods of standing (up to 10 hours/day) Must be able to operate overhead cranes Although all production areas have overhead cranes, on occasion Manufacturing, Stockroom and Assembly employees may choose to lift items by hand for convenience. It is the responsibility of all employees to follow correct lifting techniques and seek help or utilize mechanical lifting aids as appropriate to avoid potential injury. Requires good eye, hand coordination Requires use of hand tools, files, sanders and grinders Primary Responsibilities CNC Machinist C: It is every BPM, Inc. Employee s responsibility to be aware of and work with Belvac's current documented Quality Management System as it pertains to their job requirements Provides information to make new set-up sheets correct errors in process and set-up sheets Reads prints, job order, tooling instructions or standard charts to determine product specifications, workholding arrangement, cutting speeds, feed rates and cutting tools to be used Know set-ups/fixtures and use of Observes numerical displays on control panel and compares with data on process sheet to verify dimensional adjustments, feed rates and speeds of machining cuts. Lifts parts manually or with hoist and positions and secures it in fixture Calls down a program Use of appropriate measuring equipment Establishes zero reference point on part, such as at intersection of two edges or over hold location. Follow established Safety Policies and Procedures Perform preventative maintenance on machine center and related equipment. Deburr/Part mark as needed Operates at least one CNC machine All employees performing a work sequence on any work order are required to physically move and transact the material to the next sequence once their task has been completed. All employees utilizing dispatch sheets shall run jobs in date sequence without exception, unless directed otherwise by cognizant Manager and/or Production Planners. It is every employee s responsibility to improve processes to reduce set-up and run-time standards. This shall be a performance measure during all employee evaluations. Must keep assigned machine(s) and work area cleaned and neat. May fasten part in holding fixture mounted on machine table or clamp jog or template in position on part. Use of vises, parallels, stops Effective use of fixtures Selection and use of tool holders Proper clamping techniques
2 Uses precision tools, such as micrometers and caliber s Selects speeds and feeds Adjust machine table to align spindle over point, using dial indicator eligible for promotion to a CNC Machinist B. Primary Responsibilities for CNC Machinist B: Identifies proper tooling and checks instrumentation according to process sheets Makes new set up sheets for new jobs Select and installs preset tooling Selects and installs preset tooling in tool posts, turrets or indexing heads and automatics tool change magazine, in sequence specified on process sheet Reviews program to make sure that it is consistent with print May operate machine manually throughout first piece operation to verify accuracy of setup. Observes numerical displays on control panel and compares with data on process sheet to verify dimensional adjustments, feed rates and speeds of machining cuts. Inspects first-run piece and spot-checks succeeding pieces for conformance to specifications, using micrometers and precision dial gauges Ability to read programs May set tools before positioning them in machine, using precision gauges and instruments Use of machine dials, machine readout, measuring equipment Know and utilize the program prove out procedure Identifies proper tooling and checks instrumentation according to process sheets Understand/correction of machine alarms Recognize tool wear Verifies location and dimensions of holes, using measuring instruments, such as dial indicator, gauge blocks, telescoping gauge and internal micrometer Required to run at least two functionally different CNC Machining Centers, i.e. CNC lathe/cnc mill Edit program when needed Must run multiple machines. Use of tooling types/applications All preceding criteria, criteria at next level and time in grade requirement of two years (minimum) must be met before eligible for promotion to a CNC Machinist A.
3 Primary Responsibilities CNC Machinist A: Selects and sets cutting speeds; feed rates, depth of cut and cutting tool according to machining instructions or knowledge of metal properties Works to tolerances as close as +/ inch May work only from print Studies prints, sequence of operation and set-up requirements May lay out reference lines and machining locations on part, according to print, using layout tools, such as rule, divider and scriber, applying knowledge of shop mathematics and layout techniques May sharpen tools on bench grinder Turns dials and switches to override control and correct machine performance, applying practical knowledge of lathe operation. Studies dispatch sheet and organizes materials for next run during automatic CNC-controlled cycles to shorten changeover time Use of indexes, boring heads, rotary tables Proficient in programming knowledge.
