Chasing after God s word MEMORY VERSE FOR UNIT 9 God sent the good news to his people. It s good news about the peace Jesus brings. ACTS 10:36 Turn to Page 138 for Memory Verse Center tips and suggestions. Spring Quarter, Week 13 Paul & Silas: Jailhouse Worshipers [ ] Your Children Will Learn: o Paul & Silas shared the good news Paul & Silas worshiped God Truth for Your Children Today s Bible Passage: Acts 16:17-34 The woman followed Paul and the rest of us around. She shouted, These men serve the most high God. They re telling you how to be saved. She kept this up for many days. Finally, Paul became upset. Turning around, he spoke to the spirit. In the name of Jesus Christ, he said, I command you to come out of her! At that very moment, the spirit left her. The female slave s owners realized that their hope of making money was gone. So they grabbed Paul and Silas. They dragged them into the marketplace to face authorities. They brought them to the judges. These men are Jews, her owners said. They are making trouble in our city. They are suggesting practices that are against Roman law. These are practices we can t accept or take part in. The crowd joined the attack against Paul and Silas. The judges ordered that Paul and Silas be stripped and beaten. They were whipped without mercy. Then they were thrown into prison. The jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. When he received his orders, he put Paul and Silas deep inside the prison. [continued on page 138] Truth for You...A Meditation for Leaders God was with Paul and Silas as they were being beaten and thrown in jail. He was with them during the earthquake and while they were sharing with the jailor s family. And He was with them when they were released from prison. God was with Paul and Silas the whole time, just like He is with us every day. Sometimes in the midst of a crisis situation it s hard to see that God is there. We may feel angry, hurt, or confused about our current circumstances. We may question the very foundation of our beliefs. But remember the words that Jesus said right before He ascended into heaven. And you can be sure that I am always with you, to the very end. (Matthew 28:20b) PAGE 137

Truth for Your children Today s Bible Passage Acts 16:17-34 continued from page 137 He fastened their feet so they couldn't get away. About midnight Paul and Silas were praying. They were also singing hymns to God. The other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was a powerful earthquake. It shook the prison from top to bottom. All at once the prison doors flew open. Everybody s chains fell loose. The jailer woke up. He saw that the prison doors were open. He pulled out his sword and was going to kill himself. He thought the prisoners had escaped. Don t harm yourself! Paul shouted. We are all here! The jailer called out for some lights. He rushed in, shaking with fear. He fell down in front of Paul and Silas. Then he brought them out. He asked, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? They replied, Believe in the Lord Jesus. Then you and your family will be saved. They spoke the word of the Lord to him. They also spoke to all the others in his house. At that hour of the night, the jailer took Paul and Silas and washed their wounds. Right away he and his whole family were baptized. The jailer brought them to his house. He set a meal in front of them. He and his whole family were filled with joy. They had become believers in God. 3 1. Memory Verse Booster: Copy the Memory Verse Booster from the Pattern Pages on white paper. Cut it out along the bold outline. Color the picture and add glitter to the starbursts. What s the Point?: The memory verse booster gives the children a copy of the verse to take home and hang up. They will continue to be reminded of the verse every time they look at it, and other family members may learn the verse also! Say to the children: God sent the good news to his people. It s good news about the peace Jesus brings. (Acts 10:36) Supplies: Memory verse booster from the Pattern Pages copied on white paper Box lids Markers and crayons Q-tips White glue in small cups Glitter 2. Portable Worshiper: Copy the picture of the worshiping child from the Pattern Pages. Color the picture with crayons and colored pencils. When the children are finished, push a long piece of yarn through the hole and tie it. The children can carry their little worshiping child from place to place. What s the Point?: This activity will be a reminder to them that Paul and Silas worshiped God. We can worship God anywhere! The children can carry the art on the playground, in the restroom or in the hall. Say to the children: Paul and Silas shared the good news; Paul and Silas worshiped God. Supplies: Worshiping child from the Pattern Pages copied on cardstock Colored pencils and crayons Yarn Hole punch Table-Top Activity Guide Week 13: Paul & Silas: Jailhouse Worshipers Note To Leaders: Please choose 2 or 3 table-top activities. Most of the activities can be adapted for any age. Have fun! Let the children do it! Don t forget to copy... the 3. Prison Chain Prints: Pass out a variety of colors of construction paper to the children. Spread two or three colors of tempera paint on paper plates. Use an empty toilet paper roll and dip the round end into the paint. Then press it on the paper to print a circle. Continue to make circles so they overlap and make a chain on the paper. What s the Point?: As the children work, talk about Paul and Silas and how they ended up in jail with chains on their feet. Say to the children: Paul and Silas shared the good news; Paul and Silas worshiped God. Supplies: Paper plates Empty toilet paper rolls Paint smocks Colored construction paper Two or three colors of tempera paint 4. Table-top Blocks: Set up a table with wooden blocks, and Duplos. The children can build jailhouses and knock them down! You can also use cardboard blocks or an assortment of cardboard boxes you have collected at home. If you do, build on the floor where there is more space. The children can build jailhouses over and over again. What s the Point?: Talk about this part of the story as you build the jailhouse and knock it down. While singing and worshiping God, the earth shook and the chains holding Paul and Silas fell off! Try shaking the table to knock the blocks down! Say to the children: Paul and Silas shared the good news; Paul and Silas worshiped God. Supplies: Home page Blocks and Duplos PAGE 139

I Can Do That! EASY IDEAS FOR CREATIVE STORYTELLING: Acts 16: minutes (Age 3) 15 minutes (Ages 4 & 5) Jailhouse MOtions Get the children involved in the story! Create a big jail house in your classroom by arranging the chairs in a circle. As you begin to tell the story, tell the children that they are in jail just like Paul and Silas. Have the children do some simple motions that go with the story s action. Follow the prompts in the story. Story Time Introduction Boys and girls, last week we saw a puppet show about a woman who made purple cloth. Do you remember her name? (Let the children answer.) That s right! Her name was Lydia. Paul shared the good news with her. The good news is all about Jesus. Jesus came to earth and died on the cross so we could live with Him in heaven. And, Jesus came alive again. Now that s really good news! Our story today is all about Paul and a friend of his named Silas. Paul and Silas traveled together. They went from city to city sharing the good news of Jesus. Bible Story Storyteller: The lesson from the Bible starts here. See the I Can Do That sidebar on this page for storytelling ideas. One day Paul and Silas were walking around a city. They had other friends with them, too. Paul and Silas shared the good news! They shared the good news with anyone who would listen to them. PAUL & SILAS SHARED THE GOOD NEWS PAUL & SILAS WORSHIPED GOD There was a girl who began to follow Paul and Silas. She was a slave girl. She kept shouting at them. She said, These men serve God, and they will tell you how to be saved! She kept doing this for days and days. She had a bad spirit in her. Well, Paul had enough of this girl yelling at them. So he turned around and told the bad spirit to come out. And it did! The owners of the slave girl didn t like that one little bit. So they took Paul and Silas to the leaders of the city. The owners of the slave-girl said, These men are making trouble. They are upsetting the people in the city. There was a crowd of people there. They said mean things about Paul and Silas too. All that Paul and Silas were doing was sharing the good news. They weren t doing anything wrong. Well, it didn t matter. The leaders of the city had Paul and Silas beat up. Then they were thrown in jail. The jailer had orders to guard them closely. So the jailer put them in jail and chained their feet together so they couldn t get away. (Have the children put their feet together as if they are chained together.) Well, it was really late at night. Paul and Silas worshiped God. (Have the children raise their hands in the air.) They began to pray and sing songs to God while they were in jail. They were chained together, but they still worshiped God. All the other people who were in jail listened to them worshiping God. PAGE 140

Story Time [cont.] All of a sudden, the earth began shaking! It was an earthquake! (Have the children rock back and forth.) The floors of the jail shook! Everybody s chains fell off! (Have the children pull their feet apart.) All that shaking woke up the jailer. He pulled out his sword. He saw that the jail doors were opened. The jailer was certain that everyone had escaped. But Paul shouted to him, Don t worry, Mr. Jailer! We re all here! We didn t escape! Then the jailer called for the guards to bring some lights in so he could see. He ran into the jail where Paul and Silas were and fell down on his knees in front of them. The jailer was shaking! The jailer took Paul and Silas out of jail. He asked Paul and Silas, What do I need to do to be saved by God? Paul and Silas said, Believe in Jesus, then you and your family will be saved. Then Paul and Silas shared the good news with the jailer. The good news is all about Jesus. Jesus came to earth and died on the cross so we could live with Him in heaven. And, Jesus came alive again. Paul and Silas shared the good news with other people who were in the jail. Even though it was very late, the jailer took Paul and Silas and washed the sores they had from being beat up. Then Paul and Silas baptized the jailer and his whole family. The jailer took Paul and Silas to his home and fed them dinner. The jailer was so happy! He and his whole family believed in God and the good news of Jesus! The next day, the leaders of the city sent officers to the jailer. They said, Let those men go! So the jailer and the officers went to Paul and Silas and told them they were free to go. But Paul said, They treated us badly and threw us into jail for no reason. The leaders of the city will have to come and take us out. The officers went back and told the leaders of the city what Paul said. So they went to the jail and told Paul and Silas they were sorry. Then they led them out of jail and asked them to leave the city. Paul and Silas worshiped God, (have the children raise their hands in the air) even though they had been beat up and had been thrown in jail. And, Paul and Silas shared the good news. Jesus came to earth and died on the cross so we could live with Him in heaven. The jailer and his entire family heard the good news of Jesus. They all believed and were baptized! Nothing can stop the good news of Jesus! Go to Wrap It Up! in the sidebar. Great Big Holy Bible The text and pictures in the Great Big Holy Bible follow your Bible lesson closely. You may choose to use it during the Bible lesson segment of your class, or use it at the end to reinforce your dramatic storytelling. Wrap It Up! Storyteller: If you are o teaching 3 s, simply repeat the points to them one more time. If you are teaching 4 s and 5 s, repeat the points AND use these questions to help the children relate the story to their own lives. Today we learned that: o Paul & Silas shared the good news. (What is the good news? What happened to them?) o Paul & Silas worshiped God. (Where were they when they worshiped God? Who heard them worshiping?) oo PAGE 141

GAMES GOOD, GOOD NEWS! This game is played just like Duck, Duck, Goose, except we are going to use the words Good, Good, News! o Say to the children, In our story today, we learned that Paul and Silas shared the good news. The good news is all about Jesus. We are going to play the game Duck, Duck, Goose but instead of saying Duck, Duck, Goose we will say Good, Good, News! Then play the game. o After you have played the game and the children are resting in the circle, ask them to share some good news with the group. It can be anything good that has happened to them. They might share about a new stuffed animal, a new baby brother or sister, or a special day with their grandparents. Snack Time...10 min. Small Groups min. How to Make it Happen: Divide the children into small groups. 1. Say: Today we learned that Paul and Silas shared the good news and that they worshiped God. 2. Ask: What is the good news? Can you share the good news? Who can you share it with? 3. Pray: Dear God, thank You for sending Jesus. He is the good news! Amen. PAUL & SILAS SHARED THE GOOD NEWS The Purpose of Small Groups: TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE CHILDREN TO RECAP THE LESSON OR POINTS TO REVIEW THE MEMORY VERSE TOGETHER Time To Go! Dismiss the children to parents or guardians only! Keep our children safe! Please Remember! Photocopy The Home Page before church. Hand it to the parents when they pick up their children. o Some children may need help coming up with good news to share. Encourage them to think of something fun they did that day. PAUL & SILAS WORSHIPED GOD Home the page...see page 143 PAGE 142

Home the page Memory Verse for Unit 9 God sent the good news to his people. It s good news about the peace Jesus brings. Acts 10:36 Spring Quarter, Week 13 Paul & Silas: Jailhouse Worshipers Your Children Will Learn: o Paul & Silas shared the good news o Paul & Silas worshiped God MONDAY Read & Do Read Acts 16: Ask your child, What is the good news? Where were Paul and Silas when they worshiped God? Then what happened? TUESDAY Art Make a paper chain out of paper. Cut the paper into 1 x 6 strips. Attach the two ends of a paper strip together to make a circle. Then link another paper strip through the first and tape the ends together. Add as many paper strips as you would like to make chain. Talk about how Paul and Silas were chained together in jail and how they worshiped God. WEDNESDAY Pray & Praise Paul and Silas worshiped God in jail. They worshiped God even though they were in the most difficult circumstances. The other people in jail were watching and listening to Paul and Silas. When things are difficult, people are watching us, especially our children. Even if it s a difficult day today, take some time to pray and worship God with your child. They will learn that you can go to God anytime and anywhere. THURSDAY Out & About Here s your chance to practice worshiping God anywhere, just like Paul and Silas did! Wherever you go this week, challenge each other to worship God. Start up a song and your family members will likely join you. You can memorize this simple phrase: In song and prayer, God is there. FRIDAY Play Get a small cardboard box, like a shoebox, and make it into a jail box. Cut out jail bars on the box lid. Let your child choose two of their favorite stuffed animals and pretend they are Paul and Silas. Place the two stuffed animals in the box and shake the box. Talk about the earthquake that happened after Paul and Silas worshiped God. You and your child can act out the entire story with the two stuffed animals. Have fun playing! SATURDAY Just for Parents... God was with Paul and Silas as they were being beaten and thrown in jail. He was with them during the earthquake and while they were sharing with the jailor s family. And He was with them as they were released from prison. God was with Paul and Silas the whole time, just like He is with us every day as we live our lives.
