Concept of the Audit What is the Audit Internationalisation of Universities? service to HRK member institutions helps universities to assess and (further) develop their internationality and internationalisation strategies peer review process and quality management tool ranking, accreditation! The Audit is voluntary & independent flexible & tailored to each university s needs confidential & holistic: considering the entire university & all fields of international activity 3

Additional info: Specification of HRK-Audit Service for Higher Education Institutions The Audit offers an assessment of the university s status quo of internationality identification of the university s internationalisation goals (further) development of an internationalisation strategy recommendations for specific measures in defined fields of action Governance Study & Teaching Research Support evaluation of current internationalisation activities and their effectiveness and fitness for purpose 4

Actors in the Audit process Actors involved Project Group of the university represents the whole institution (executive board, faculties, researchers, administration, students, foreign members of the institution) identification of the university s internationalisation goals External Experts have expertise in the field of internationalisation, international professional experience, experience as auditors, knowledge of the German HE system & a good command of German 5

The HRK-Audit as one expample for the buy-in How does the HRK-Audit help German universities in their internal buy-in to develop and implement an institutional internationalisation strategy? it involves the whole institution (executive board, faculties, researchers, administration, students etc.) gets all stakeholders together at one table it commits the institution to take a systematic approach to the (further) development of its internationalisation provides courtesy and structure it raises awareness and creates ownership within the whole institution puts internationalisation on the agenda 9

The HRK-Audit as one expample for the buy-in How does the HRK-Audit help German universities in their internal buy-in to develop and implement an institutional internationalisation strategy? it demands an institution-wide discussion of motives and the definition of both strategic and operative goals of internationalisation gets things going (kick-off) it fosters dialogue, exchange of perspectives, cooperation, and mutual understanding within the institution generates feeling of belonging, leaves nobody behind it considers both top down AND bottom up-initiatives embraces different approaches to internationalisation 10
