Ambition for Africa is high Ambition to increase agricultural production in Africa is high across the board. Many targets have been set to ramp up production: Coalition for African Rice Development: Double total African rice production by 2018 Nigerian government: Double cocoa production by 2015 Ugandan government: Fish export increase to $1 bln Zambian government: 10% of national fuel consumption to be derived from ethanol Ethiopian government: Coffee production increase by 50% increase in 5 years Kenya and Zimbabwe: Maintain and increase market share of EU cut flower imports (35% and 11% resp.) Tanzanian government: Increase total coffee production by 1/3 to 80,000 tons by 2016

Focus four zones of opportunity should guide companies Meet African consumers needs Increase production inclusively Zones of opportunity Build supply chains that add value These zones should guide companies towards the areas where chances of success are greatest Each represents a good opportunity Become regionally and globally competitive Global companies already demonstrate success in each zone Source: Rabobank, 2013

Zone 1 - Improved risk allocation is key An imbalance between risk and reward will hold back investment Improve knowledge Better understand risks through increased transparency Secure offtake deals Secure guarantees of sale Increase outputs Improve access to inputs Improve local infrastructure and logistics Deliver assistance Mechanism/Institution for reaching the upstream end of the chain Blend available finance Tap into government, donor, corporate and NGO sources Source: Rabobank, 2014

Zone 1 Produce more Global F&A companies recognise this is the critical starting point both through improving yields and expanding land area Manage risk: Market access Lack of insights Relationships between supplier and buyer need to strengthen Unilever Building new smallholder farmer programs A Public-Private Partnership model to boost tea production AGCO Using the concept of a model or future farm Enabling farmers to produce more through a pre-competitive approach Mars Inc Boosting cocoa production Mars has invested in identifying improved plant genetics, and in providing access to new plant-stock and advice

Zone 2 A supply chain revolution is needed Partnerships between local and global companies should form the backbone of supply chains Farm inputs Farming Trader Processor Off-taker Partnerships are being formed along these lines Partnerships that match the capabilities and networks of global F&A companies and local champions are central to effective supply chains Source: Rabobank, 2014

Zone 2 Build supply chains that add value Global F&A companies are increasingly engaged along the chain Managing risk: Supply security Sustainability of supply Market access Stronger, more resilient and more responsive supply chains are needed ICM Agribusiness Integrating the rice supply chain Connecting smallholders to the mill and to the market Zambian Emergent Farmer Program Providing access to finance through connections Friesland Campina WAMCO Nigeria From imports to local production Building the chain and supporting local production

This is what creates success for global F&A companies in Africa Adopt an inclusive approach Establish supply chain partnerships Keys to success Bring unique capabilities Reduce risk and secure finance Make a commitment Source: Rabobank, 2013

Conclusions Plenty of opportunity also plenty of risk Global F&A companies are needed Be realistic Opportunities exist across commodities and regions, but few are straight-forward They bring capabilities, capital and supply chain expertise that are not widely available The growth outlook is very positive, but it will take time to realise opportunities Leading role for global F&A companies in helping to realise Africa s food & agri potential
