Siebel ebusiness EAI Infrastructure 1 Purpose The purpose of this document is to elucidate integration techniques and technologies employed by Siebel ebusiness application suite. Over the years SureShot Strategies professionals have been responsible for delivering enterprise applications related integration initiatives. Based on our implementation experience all these years with Siebel enterprise applications, we have put together a brief summary of various integration technologies and techniques employed by Siebel ebusiness application suite. 2 Background In the last decade, packaged software solutions became very popular. Software packages such as SAP, Oracle ERP, PeopleSoft, Siebel ebusiness, J. D. Edwards etc. etc. are few examples of packaged applications. These software packages have rapidly become the de facto industry standard for replacement of age old legacy systems. The major advantage of these systems is that they provide a common integrated software platform for business processes and functions. Mostly all of these enterprise packaged systems now offer broad functional coverage nearing the best-of-breed capabilities, vertical industry extensions, and a robust technical architecture. Enterprise packaged vendors have been busy developing, acquiring, or bundling new functionality so that their packages go beyond the traditional realms of finance, materials planning & management, and human resources. In addition to the added business functionality for streamlining business processes within an enterprise, it is fundamentally important for an enterprise to be able to perform business processes across their enterprise boundaries to interact with partners, vendors and customers in an efficient and seamless fashion. This allows organizations to streamline operations, reduce costs and improve responsiveness to customer demands. The rapid pace of global business nowadays places a unique set of challenges on companies looking to improve and automate their operations, and at the same time, remain poised to adapt quickly to change. With increased competition, deregulation, globalization, and mergers & acquisition activity, users increasingly realize that architecture plays a key role in how quickly enterprise packaged vendors can implement, maintain, expand/customize, and integrate their products. The enterprise packaged products architecture is going to do much more than simply provide the functionality, the user interface, and the platform support. It is going to determine whether a product is going to endure, whether it will scale to a large number of users, and whether it will be able to incorporate emerging technologies, all in order to accommodate increasing user requirements. Users' visions of all these enterprise packaged application packages are evolving from tactical to strategic, and users are no longer willing to choose between integration and business functionality. In order to address all of these new requirements, especially related to integration, all enterprise packaged vendors are redefining their technology platforms for enabling e-business globally not just within the enterprise. Why is integration needed? Companies have best-of-breed applications within an enterprise Companies have to seamlessly integrate with partners and customers Each application has disparate user interface and underlying data model/store 1

Companies need a consistent, seamless and reliable access to all business data within an enterprise and data external to the enterprise (partners & customers) without having to reenter data in multiple applications What does integration entail? Identify the business data to be integrated in source and target applications Map & Transform (if needed) data between source and target applications Transport the data between source and target applications Traditional Application Integration Batch synchronization with custom transfer routines on source and target side applications Integration of legacy screens into the new application user interface using screen scraping techniques Problems with Traditional Application Integration No Consistent integration architecture New applications increase the number of integration points Connected application become frozen in old releases and integration become too expensive to upgrade During the past few years, enterprise packaged vendors have opened up their tightly interwoven modules and created application programming interfaces (APIs) to connect to 3rdparty best-of-breed systems. Enterprise packaged vendors are offering a broad range of open integration schemas, including extensible mark-up language (XML) messaging and proprietary connectors or open APIs, since easy integration to 3rdparty applications has become a key selling point for them. Typically, a component based technical architecture enables adaptability for supporting fast changing, ever evolving e-business activities. Componentization allows software applications such as ERP applications to extend the core ERP system with SCM, CRM, and other ERP-adjacent solutions. Implementing a fully component-based architecture requires that vendors completely redesign their applications and then rewrite it using C++, Java, or a component-based 4GL, and run it under component object model (COM+), common object request broker architecture (CORBA),.NET, or Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs). Instead of the costly, risky moves to full componentization, most enterprise packaged vendors have selected a safer approach. They use component-based APIs to construct a "façade" for their existing application. These APIs provide programmatic access to common business objects (e.g., an order, a business partner, a delivery), which are mapped to the existing application's functionality in a way that shields users from the complexity of the underlying code. Subsequent sections in this document delve into the repertoire of integration tools, techniques and strategies offered by Siebel ebusiness application suite. 2

3 Siebel EAI Architecture Siebel EAI is a suite of modules which enable Siebel to exchange information bi-directionally with other applications and technologies and consists of following components Server Components (e.g. Workflow process manager, receiver components) Siebel Adapters (e.g. MQ/HTTP transports) Pre-built components (Data Mapper, Converters) Pre-built application connectors (SAP, Oracle, etc) Virtual Business Components Business Object Interfaces COM Java Data Beans Web Services Enterprise Integration Manager (EIM) Siebel Workflow Siebel Integration Objects EAI Dispatch Service Siebel Release 7.7 & Beyond External Business Components & Distributed Joins JMS Support Java Business Services 3

3.1 Integration Strategies Siebel EAI Tools Integration Strategy Real Time Data Replication Batch Data Replication Data Sharing Screen Scraping Description In real time, synchronize the data in one system with the data in another system At certain times, synchronize the data in one system with data in another system From System A, access and change System D data; do not store the data in System A From Application A, Access screen from Application B Siebel Integration Tools Integration Workflow Process EAI Connector EAI Dispatch Service JMS MQ Adapter Web Services EIM Integration Workflow Process EBC VBC Web Services ActiveX 3.2 Integration Steps Identify data to integration Identify business objects, business components, fields Map data and transform between formats Common data formats include XML, Property Set Some useful Business Services: EAI XML Converter, XML Gateway, Siebel EAI Adapter Transport data between applications EAI HTTP Transport sends outbound messages using HTTP 4

3.3 Siebel EAI Architecture Elements Workflows Strings business services (pre-built or custom business services) together into steps to transform and transport data Runs in Object Manager or in Workflow Manager Server Component Integration Objects Integration Objects are a valuable tool for extracting or inserting/updating data within Siebel for real-time access using the EAI Siebel Adapter. These will help to minimize the amount of custom code necessary to transform between systems. Internal Integration Objects: correspond to data to be loaded into or read from Siebel Business Objects. External Integration Objects: correspond to data received from or sent to the external application. Business Services Map, transform, and transport data between applications Implement both pre-built methods and custom scripting EAI Dispatch Service Uses rules to evaluate the structure and contents of incoming XML data. Based on the rules, data is sent to a specified business service or workflow It optionally transforms the data before sending it Virtual Business Components (VBC) Enables the display and manipulation of external data from with Siebel user interface without storing data in the Siebel data model. End-To-End Connectors Provide end-to-end integration between Siebel Applications and other enterprise applications like SAP and Oracle ERP. Object Interfaces Expose Siebel business objects to programmatic access (API) from within Siebel or external applications using COM Servers: Automation Server, Data Server CORBA Object Manager Java Data Bean ActiveX Data Controls Allows display of Siebel UI in an external application or vice versa. Web Services Support Standards based protocol for publishing Service Interface Siebel Inbound Web Services enables external application to invoke Siebel Web Service Interface Siebel Outbound Web Services enables Siebel application to invoke external Web Service Interface External Business Components (EBC) (Siebel Release 7.7 & Beyond) A Business Component that derives its data from an external relational data source A Business Component is configured as an EBC in Tools by specifying a base table in the Table property, base table being External Only relational data sources that are supported by OM, are supported for EBC Java Business Services (JBS) (Siebel Release 7.7 & Beyond) Service Framework that allows the invocation of Java classes Java services can be invoked from a workflow process, run time event, scripting Distributed Join (Siebel Release 7.7 & Beyond) A join (1:1 relationship) that spans 2 relational data sources (Siebel or non-siebel) 5

Allows a single, logical record to span multiple data sources Join field are read-only JMS Support (Siebel Release 7.7 & Beyond) JMS is an API for accessing enterprise messaging systems. It is part of the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE). Support the ability to asynchronously send and receive critical business data and events. Defines a common enterprise messaging API that is designed to be easily and efficiently supported by a wide range of enterprise messaging products. Supports both message queuing and publish-subscribe styles of messaging. Siebel EAI support for JMS allows integration with any messaging systems (Tibco, SeeBeyond, WebSphere etc. etc.) which are JMS compliant. 6
