1 Vital Statistics Introduction The Office for National Statistics publishes vital statistics which includes data on births, deaths and fertility trends on an annual basis at local authority level. VS1 presents data on birth registrations by area of usual residence of mother. VS3 presents mortality by cause of death (cause of death as given in the death register and based on the doctor's or coroner's certificate of cause of death). VS4 presents live births and deaths at ward level. VS2 data for 2011 (deaths by area of usual residence) is due to be published on the ONS website between December 2012 and January The registration of life events (births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships) is a service carried out by the Local Registration Service in partnership with the General Register Office (GRO). Registration of a birth is legally required within 42 days of its occurrence and deaths should be registered within five days of the date of death. Key Statistics Figure 1: Live births, 2011 (numbers, rates and percentages) Live Births (Numbers) Total Male Female Total Fertility Rate (TFR)* Percentage of live births outside marriage or civil partnership Percentage of live births under 2.5kg North Warwickshire Nuneaton & Bedworth 1, Rugby 1, Stratford-on-Avon 1, Warwick 1, Warwickshire 6,273 3,198 3, England 688, , , The Total Fertility Rate (TFR) is the average number of live children that a group of women would bear if they experienced the age-specific fertility rates of the calendar year in question throughout their childbearing lifespan. The sub-national TFRs have been calculated using the number of live births by five year age groups and the mid population estimates.

The rates for women of all ages under 18 under 20 and 45 and over have been calculated using the female population aged and respectively. 4 Key Messages In Warwickshire in 2011, there were 6,273 live births, 3,198 boys (51%) and 3,075 girls (49%). Over a quarter of the County s live births (26%) were in Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough while North Warwickshire accounted for the lowest volume of live births with just over 10% (or 651 live births) in the County. In 2011 the total fertility rate (TFR) in Warwickshire was 1.89 children per woman. This differs quite considerably when looking at the District and Borough rates. Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough and Rugby Borough had the highest TFR with 2.06 children per woman, while Warwick District had the lowest with 1.67 children per woman. The Warwickshire TFR (1.89) is slightly lower than both the national (1.93) and regional (2.02) equivalents. The West Midlands region had the highest TFR among the regions of England in The TFR for all Districts and Boroughs in the County have risen over the ten year period from 2001 to 2011 mirroring the national trend (Figure 3). Among the local authorities in England in 2011, Barking and Dagenham had the highest TFR with 2.45 children per woman while Cambridge had the lowest with 1.37 children per woman. 47% of live births in Warwickshire in 2011 were outside of marriage or civil partnership. This figure is nine percentage points lower in Stratford-on-Avon District (38%) but is higher in the North of the County (North Warwickshire 54% of births in 2011 outside marriage or civil partnership, 57% in Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough). Warwickshire has a slightly higher proportion of live births weighing less than 2.5kg at 7.3% of live births compared to a national average of 7%. In Warwickshire, the highest birth rate in 2011 was for women aged (117.3 births per 1,000 women) and the lowest was for women aged over 45 (0.3 births per 1,000 women). This is lower than the national average for women aged over 45 which was 0.9 births per 1,000 women. Within the County, Nuneaton and Bedworth has the highest birth rate for women aged under 18 (13 births per 1,000 women) while Stratford-on-Avon has the lowest rate for women under 18 (six births per 1,000 women). Conversely, Nuneaton and Bedworth has the lowest birth rate for the older age groups (women aged and 35-39) and Warwick District has the highest birth rate for older age groups (women aged 35-39, 40-44). Live births are broken down to ward level as shown in Figure 4 above. The ward with the highest number of live births in Warwickshire is Warwick West ward with 205 live births in This is significantly higher than other wards in the County (the second highest is 161 live births in Abbey ward in Nuneaton and Bedworth) and while births are usually registered to where the mother is a resident, the numbers may be higher in this ward due to births potentially being registered at where they took place (Warwick Hospital). Generally, high numbers of births are clustered around urban areas, five out of the top ten highest wards are in Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough, (Abbey, Poplar, Camp Hill, Wem Brook, and Kingswood) four in Warwick District (Warwick West, Willes, Brunswick and Whitnash) and one ward in Rugby Borough (New Bilton). Deaths by area of usual residence is due to be published on the ONS website between December 2012 and January 2013, however ward level data on registered deaths is available for There

5 were three wards in 2011 that registered over 100 deaths, these are Exhall in Nuneaton and Bedworth with 129 registered deaths, Manor in Warwick District (111 registered deaths) and Milverton in Warwick District (107 registered deaths). Further Information Glossary Live Birth: a baby showing signs of life at birth. : the area where the mother usually lives. This can differ from the area of occurrence which is where the birth took place. Total Fertility Rate (TFR) is the average number of live children that a group of women would bear if they experienced the age-specific fertility rates of the calendar year in question throughout their childbearing lifespan. The sub-national TFRs have been calculated using the number of live births by five year age groups and the mid-2011 population estimates. Websites Office for National Statistics
