3 What is a Binder-Builder? A Binder-Builder is a new name for an old concept! It is simply taking a 3-ring binder and colored cardstock and turning it into a wonderful showcase of your child s learning year! What you need to get started *A printed copy of the Binder-Builder by A Journey Through Learning *A copy of Classical Conversations program cycle 2--Foundations Guide 4 th Edition *25 pieces of 8.5 x 11 colored cardstock *1 inch 3-ring binder with clear sleeve on the front *Scissors *Glue (We recommend Zip Dry Glue) *Hole puncher *Brads *Stapler *Crayons and/or colored pencils *5 tabs- Label your tab dividers: History Notebooking, Science Notebooking, Fine Arts Notebooking, Geography, and Reports. The Reports tab will be optional. You will find this optional work in the back of the book. Maps ****Please note that this Binder-Builder DO NOT include ANY maps. All of the maps can be found in your Foundations Guide. (purchased separately) You can copy the maps and place them behind the Geography tab. We also provide a page for your child to draw maps. How Do I Use it With Classical Conversations? Classical Conversations is broken up into 24 weeks. By using the Binder-Builder along with this wonderful program, you will be able to record much of what your child is learning and store it into one fun-packed binder! No more lost papers. You will still follow Classical Conversation s relaxed, enjoyable learning style. This product is meant to be fun, NOT stressful. Use it to enhance your child s learning experience. Feel free to tailor the booklets to your child. Some days your child can simply draw instead of write or find the information on the internet and glue it onto the booklet. The choice is YOURS! Each week has a booklet for English, Science, and Latin. Math booklets DO NOT include skip counting. Math booklets start at week 11. You will also have notebooking pages for History, Science, and Fine Arts and a page to draw maps. Copyright 2013 A Journey Through Learning 3
4 How Do I Set Up My Binder-Builder? Gather your pieces of cardstock and 3-hole punch them. Next, in the lower righthand corner number your cardstock from Place in 3-ring binder. The front of the first page will have your cover sheet glued to it. Then, your first History Memory Copywork sheet will be glued to the back of that page. There are two different History Memory Copywork sheets. One is for older children. It has space for 4 days of copywork, The younger version has larger lines and only 2 days of copywork. The booklets for your first unit will then be glued to the front of your second page. This lay-out allows you to view anything for the unit you are studying at the same time! You will follow this process throughout the entire binder-builder. Located at the top right corner of each page, you will find the week of study. Each page will also have all directions for the construction of the mini-booklet. Each booklet is labeled with the subject. A small key is also here to show you where to glue each mini-booklet onto the card stock. ****If you would like to use the booklets for the week over and over, you can either; 1. slip the entire Memory Work page in a page protector sheet or 2. you can cut the left side off of a page protector and just slip it over the page. Then, on the last day of the week your child can write their answers on the books. This will allow you to have a finished copy at the end of the week of your child s work. Make 5 labeled tabs and place behind the cardstock. Behind these tabs you will place the notebooking pages, report pages, book log and more! Label your tabs with the following titles: History notebooking page Science notebooking page Fine arts notebooking page. Geography Reports (optional) Maps ****Please note that this Binder-Builder DO NOT include ANY maps. All of the maps can be found in your Foundations Guide. (purchased separately) You can copy the maps and place them behind the Geography tab. We also provide a page for your child to draw maps. Copyright 2013 A Journey Through Learning 4
