1 Designed to meet these objectives: Social Studies Students will recognize U.S. and world geography. Students will identify geographic regions and physical features. Students will read and interpret maps, legends, and symbols. Students will understand location, distance, direction, and scale. Students will locate countries, continents, and bodies of water. These colorful, easy-to-use maps are a great way to build or reinforce essential geography skills! We ve included a variety of maps, including physical and political maps of the U.S. and world. As they answer fun questions about each map, children discover everything from longitude and latitude to rivers and time zones. What s Included 8 full-color map transparencies 64 cut-apart question cards Nylon storage pouch Using the Maps Before using the maps, you will need to cut apart the question cards. They are printed on 8 acetate sheets, color-coded to match the maps that they accompany. There are 8 question cards for each map. When the questions have been cut apart, store them in the handy storage pouch that we ve included. That way, they will be right at hand as you work with the maps Lakeshore JJ828 (800) Ages 9+ Printed in China
2 To begin building students map skills, choose one of the maps and place it on your overhead projector. Point out the legend and other features of the map. When children have become familiar with the map, choose a color-coded question card and place it in the blank square on the map transparency. Who can answer the questions? If possible, ask children to come to the overhead and point out how they found the answers on the map. NOTE: The maps included in this kit are intended for use as a map skills instructional tool. Although every effort has been made to maintain the accuracy and precision of the maps, some discrepancies and inaccuracies may appear when they are projected, due to variations in overhead projectors. In addition, longitude, latitude, and map scale are approximate. Using a Distance Scale Several of the questions for the U.S. States & Capitals map ask students to use the map s scale to determine approximate distances. To use the scale, place a sheet of paper on the map between the two cities or borders being measured. Mark the location of each on the edge of the paper. Then, move the paper down to the scale. Most likely, the distance will be greater than that shown in the scale. Place the left-hand mark even with 0 on the scale, and make a mark showing where the scale ends. Slide the paper so that the 0 lines up with this mark. Continue marking and sliding your paper until you reach the end of your original distance. To find the total distance, multiply the length of the scale by the number of times you had to slide and mark the paper. Meeting Individual Needs ELL Preview the chosen map with a small group of students. Review the type of map represented, along with the legend and symbols. Have students locate an example of each symbol on the map. Ask them what it represents. Encourage students to make personal connections with the lesson, such as thinking of ways that a specific map could be used in their daily lives. Reteach/Extra Support Review a map and its legend with students. Discuss the meaning of each symbol, and explain why each of these symbols might have been chosen. Encourage students to find similar maps in atlases, reference books, or textbooks. Have them discuss what these maps represent and what their legends show. Allow students independent access to the maps so that they can become familiar with them. 2
3 Challenge Place a map on the overhead and encourage students to think of their own questions to ask about it. Challenge students to create new symbols to add to the map s legend. What do their symbols represent, and where should they be placed on the map?
