2 HISTORY Hotel Derlon enjoys a rich history as it is situated on what is arguably Europe s most beautiful square. This square, the Onze Lieve Vrouwplein, has been the scene of activity dating back to Roman times. It s about this time in history that Thomas Mauel started thinking about making his living as a hotelier. Louis Derlon ( ), then upped the stakes. Derlon was born in France and was therefore familiar with culinary tours de force, so he opened a café-restaurant to cater to Maastricht s chic set and trading elite. Louis Derlon ultimately bought Mauel s hotel in The Derlon Hotel kept its name throughout the years as a mark of respect for this French chef. The following is a history of the hotel at the hands of its owners and directors. It is an impressive list of hardworking men and women. The current owner of Hotel Derlon is Benoit Wesly.

3 MAASTRICHT Located in the far southern side of the Netherlands and bordered by Belgium and Germany, Maastricht escaped war damage in the 1940s and is therefore rich in history and culture. However, a number of different invasions over the years have contributed greatly to the Maastricht of today, creating a distinctive pan-european character, strongly reflected in it s restaurants and their many flavours. Eat French, Asian, fusion, meat, fish, vegetarian, or even pretend to be a chef during a cooking workshop or bake a your own Limburgian vlaai. Visit exhibitions, attend art fairs, theater and festivals. The historic city Centre provides a fantastic backdrop to the ultimate shopping experience.
