3 What happens when? Monday PE with Charlton Books changed (every day), when they have been read and signed off by a parent or carer. Thursday Dance or Gymnastics (alternates per term). Friday home learning for Literacy and Maths given out (1 activity for each). Wednesday hand in any home learning to be marked. Monday Music Samba drumming!
4 PE KITS Earrings Please ensure that your child is not wearing earrings on our PE days. Your child need a full named kit in school every day. We still have children in school who do not have a PE kit. Without the appropriate kit, it is unsafe for them to participate in a vital (and statutory) part of their curriculum. We will send their kits home at the end of every term. Tights/socks Please could the girls have a spare pair of socks for their PE bags in case they are wearing tights on their PE day? Hair Should be tied back. Plimsolls/trainers They need plimsolls for indoor PE (Dance and Gymnastics), and trainers are more appropriate (but not essential) for outdoor PE.
5 What the day looks like 8.30am Start with breakfast or soft start led by TA all children ready for learning at 9am. Register then reflection/prayer opportunity. Maths. Collective with rest of the school PLAYTIME Phonics/SPAG Phase 6 Letters and sounds, plus spelling and grammar activities (in preparation for the assessments later on in the year). Writing Theme-led by our class book, covering all genres. Lunch in hall café style. Register and reflection. Topic based learning in 2 sessions either side of play time. PLAYTIME fruit, milk and water in the smaller play area. Soft finish once the children have left the classroom they are no longer then the responsibility of the staff team.
6 Behaviour management We use a consistent system throughout the school which involves us focussing on the children making good choices with regards to behaviour and learning. In the Pioneer s classroom we use our Monster chart to encourage us to make good choices - each day is a new day and the children move up or down according to their behaviour.
7 Our curriculum The handout explains more about the end of year expectations for children in Year 2. Using the HOPE curriculum, partnered with the National Curriculum, we plan activities using a text as a starting point from the Power of Reading scheme. We ensure the activities are differentiated and relate to the end of year expectations for each subject. At the end of the year we report on whether your child has reached the expected level for their year group, are exceeding (working above) or emerging (working below). We continually assess your child to inform our planning, and to ensure they are on target to meet their expectations. If they are finding any areas challenging then we will work together, supporting them to succeed.
8 Phonics We follow the Letters and Sounds program. It is vital that the children are encouraged as much as possible to use the same articulation at home as we use in school. The following might help BBC program Alphablocks Jolly Phonics resources which can be purchased from ELC or Amazon You Tube articulation of phonics clip
9 Maths.. Please encourage your child to look for and work with numbers as much as possible in your everyday lives. It makes numbers more REAL to them! Please take one of the 100 square booklets with you tonight, as the children will need to be fluent in using it to support their calculations. Within the booklet there are activities you can do with them to boost their confidence, and improve their accuracy. There is also a booklet for you with ideas for Maths related activities outside school, that you can do with them. All of these activities will improve their understanding of number, and increase their speed of recall of number facts.
10 SATs Teacher assessment is still the main focus for end of Key Stage 1 assessment and reporting. It is carried out as part of everyday teaching and learning. All of the children will participate in the national statutory tasks and tests which will then ensure a secure teacher assessment at the end of Key Stage 1. The children will be tested in English grammar, punctuation and spelling (SPAG), reading, arithmetic and reasoning (Maths). You can find examples of the types of tests that the children will undergo on gov.uk website, but this is just for your information. There is no need for you to prepare or practice with the children for these tests. The tests will be carried out in such a way that they will not be aware they are taking a test. This will ensure that they achieve their true potential instead of worrying about their performance.
11 Home/school relationship We are asking that you hear your child read as often as you can, and make comments on their progress in the reading record. Please hand this in daily. Please support with home learning that is sent home on a Friday. Keep an eye out on the board outside the classroom at the end of the day for further information on our learning.
12 Sharing information Please use the opportunity you have to speak to the TA during the Soft Start or alternatively arrange to speak to the class teacher if you have any concerns or information that would be appropriate for us to know about your child. SAFEGUARDING Mr Ryan is designated Safeguarding Officer. We have a duty of care to share any disclosure a child may make if we have any concerns.
13 Review Day Pioneer s review day will be on Thursday 19 th November This will be a chance for us to discuss your child s progress against the end of year expectations, as well as their strengths and passions.
