3 Introduction: Site Studio 3 develops its research into strategic regeneration and design with reference to pressing environmental themes and emerging national, regional and local initiatives. Through re-imagining the UK s national policy for eco-towns using socially, environmentally and politically informed design research we will develop critically utopic projects as demonstrations of an alternative response to future environmental challenges and as generators of debate. 1 The site area is most commonly known as Southern Washlands Nature Reserve. This reserve is located between Eastmoor and Heath in Wakefield. This is not the easiest venue to find, and there are not many people around. This area was quarried for sand and gravel from the 1950's until 1971 when the quarry was blown up. This caused some alarm in the area has residents had not been told about the impending explosion. The Southern Washlands Nature Reserve is also a controlled flood storage basin for the River Calder, helping to protect the local community from the dangers of flooding. During periods of heavy rain and floods, the Southern Washlands is designed to hold over 300,000 m3 of water, thus protecting the Lower Calder Valley, particularly areas of Castleford, from flooding. Access from Eastmoor: go to the very end of Park Lodge Lane, and then continue past the "no motorcycles" sign. Go over the canal and then park. This track is very muddy and potholed. Access from Heath (where car parking is available): head towards Kirkthorpe, and there is a major path on the left just before reaching the place-name sign for Kirkthorpe. This path drops downhill and takes you to an information board and map. A leaflet "Southern Washlands Nature Corridor" has been produced by Wakefield council. 4 Species include: tufted duck, mallard, coot, great crested grebe, black headed gull, mute swan, cormorant, woodland birds. The variety of habitats ponds, grassland, woodland and scrub, as well as the river make this area a great spot for a wide variety of wildflowers and also for watching wildlife. The various ponds and wet areas attract many dragonflies and damselflies, as well as birds such as kingfishers and sand martins. In June one will be able to see Common Spotted Orchids and Southern Marsh Orchids in the Ashfields area. They grow right next to the main paths. The site presently is used for fishing, camping and daily morning or evening walk by the residents in the nearby places. The evidence of the use could be seen from the various left over things on and off the site boundary. The appropriate and limited development could bring a change to the present usage of the site premises. 5 Introduction: Project The main idea of this project is to build a bird hide out and along with that a visitors transition building. The function of the building includes accommodation and eating facility. The bird hide also have the facility of accommodating 2 people. The important part of the project is the wooden walkway used for pedestrian access of the nature reserve and leads to the bird hideouts from the hostelry. 3 The project brings people esp. children close to the nature and being the kind of place people want, it claims to represent wider community interests. The place will not only interest the nature & bird lovers but also the peace & solace seekers. The place is meant to be for day visitors. Accommodation is provided for else. Although the place is meant to be inhabited by people now and then, it is not expected to be crowded to make a natural setting an urban development. The project encourage walking and thus apart from the accessibility from the main road the rest of the area is to be pedestrian with provision of physically handicap access to some extent. The original reeds and rushes remain along the waterfront, in between which secluded walkways have been built. Pedestrian walkways provide a varied perimeter to the waterfront. Balconies provide overlooking onto to the green area, waterfront walkways and open spaces. The wildlife could be endangered if the project boundaries are not set to some limitations. This report will discuss the technical issues in the project including material, solar, structure, ventilation and details of the building. N The project has been inspired by the traditional construction elements but the issues of the environment and the special conditions of the site and the building are also taken into consideration. The building is not designed in modern form, to avoid urban look, taking into consideration the location of it with in the natural woods.

6 Material The man construction material of this project will be wood and to some extent concrete in columns and underground footings. The bird hide, shelter and the camp cabin are to be constructed of timber with concrete footing slabs. The hostelry is raised on stilts to avoid the risk of flooding. The columns are to be of concrete as it is resistant to deterioration by water while timber posts need to be changed in certain number of years to avoid deterioration. The rest of the construction on the first floor is of timber with provision of two living green walls one on the west side and one on the southern side. A warm roof flat roof construction is provided that has the insulation above the timber structure, with the waterproof external finish layer bonded directly to it. 4 Grey water Harvesting The idea is to harvest shower and tub waste in a concealed spill over tank which utilizes its contents to replenish empty cisterns after every use. The grey water storage tank has been provided in a concealed form near the bath tub in the toilet of the hostelry s rooms. A single individual utilizes at least 50 liters of water per day to perform basic grooming practices, of which 20 liters are flushed down the drain with every shower or bath. The grey water recycling design accommodates that amount of water wasted during day to day activities. The volume of the grey water storage is approx. 4.5 cu. ft. This storage tank has the capacity to store 114 liters of water to last flushes. The rain water rather than being wasted could be put to some use. The storage tank has the capacity to store 2500liters of water. The water can either be used for landscaping purposes or could be filtered and then be serviced to the upper floor.
