Quiz over Act II The Crucible For 1-5, identify both the speaker (a) of the quote and the situation (b) in which the character says these words. Be thorough: for instance, if the speaker addresses someone in the quote or if another person is mentioned, (such as she and you in #1), then identify that person also. 1. I have gone tiptoe in this house all seven month since she is gone. I have not moved from there to there without I think to please you, and still an everlasting funeral marches round your heart. I cannot speak but I am doubted, every moment judged for lies, as though I come into a court when I come into this house! a._ 2. I do not judge you. The magistrate sits in your heart that judges you. 3. I made a gift for you today, Goody Proctor. I had to sit long hours in a chair, and passed the time with sewing. 4. She wants me dead, John, you know it! 83
5. The promise that a stallion gives a mare I gave that girl! 6. Describe the poppet in detail and explain its significance. 7. Explain what John Proctor means by these words: We are what we always were in Salem, but now the little crazy children are jangling the keys of the kingdom, and common vengeance writes the law! 8. Why is Proctor hesitant to tell the judge what he knows about Abigail? 84
9. This act ends with Proctor s words: Now Hell and Heaven grapple on our backs, and all our old pretense is ripped away make your peace! Peace. It is a providence, and no great change. We are only what we always were, but naked now. Aye, naked! And the wind, God s icy wind, will blow! Write one or two well-developed paragraphs analyzing Proctor s words. You should relate his words to what is going on in the play. Be sure to identify the rhetorical devices Miller uses in this speech: personification, irony, repetition. But be sure not only to identify these devices but to discuss their effectiveness in this speech. 85

Quiz over Act III The Crucible 1. At the beginning of this act, three husbands come before the court and Judges Hathorne and Danforth to plead for their wives. Name the three men. c. _ 2. During Act II, Elizabeth Proctor tells John this: You have a faulty understanding of young girls. There is a promise made in any bed John answers this: The promise that a stallion gives a mare I gave that girl! Yet now in Act III, John says this to the court as he admits to committing lechery with Abigail: She thinks to dance with me on my wife s grave! And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lusted, and there is a promise in such sweat. Fully explain what Elizabeth means by a promise, what John meant by a promise in Act II, and what he thinks about a promise in Act III. Explain his differing views on this promise and account for what may have changed his mind. 87
3. Fully explain the test put to Elizabeth in the courtroom. 4. Rev. Hale says of John s testimony, I believe him! This girl (pointing at Abigail) has always struck me false! She has At this moment, there is a dramatic interruption in the proceedings in the courtroom. First explain what happens. Then explain the effect on the following characters: Proctor: Rev. Hale: Mary Warren: Parris: Danforth: 88
Quiz over Act IV The Crucible 1.Explain the contention about the cows. 2. Rev. Parris seems to have changed by Act IV. Explain the events that have happened to change him. Be careful to give details. 3. Parris comments to Judge Danforth: You cannot hang this sort. Who is to be hanged, and how are they different from the usual sort? 4. Hale prevails upon Elizabeth to talk her husband into confessing. He says this to Elizabeth as she is brought from her jail cell into the courtroom, Beware Goody Proctor cleave to no faith when faith brings blood. It is mistaken law that leads you to sacrifice. Life, woman, life is God s most previous gift; no principle, however glorious, may justify the taking of it. I beg you, woman, prevail upon your husband to confess. Let him give his lie. John has already confessed to committing adultery with Abigail. What, then, does Rev. Hale mean? 89
5. Explain why Rebecca Nurse s decision and Giles Corey s fate affect John Proctor powerfully. 6. Since Proctor did confess, why is he not spared? 7. This play is regarded as a classic because it powerfully explores the most elemental emotions humans can feel, emotions such as envy, hatred, sacrifice, love, revenge, fear, and others. The audience watches as people who lived in another lifetime from us grapple with these emotions, for good or ill. One man stands out in the cast of characters one man dared and eventually triumphed, and it seems ironic that in this religious Puritan age that man was the least religious, at least according to the standards of some. That man of course is John Proctor. In a one-page essay, explain why John Proctor emerges as the noblest character in this play. Make sure you have a strong thesis statement. 90
