1 Curriculum Division Essential Teacher Tools Framework (School Use Only) Course: Fifth Grade Science Tier and area of concern Curriculum Tools Tier 1: General population of all students. Students have not demonstrated any additional needs or deficiencies. Tier 1 is the foundation and consists of scientific, research-based core instructional and behavioral methodologies, practices, and supports designed for all students in the general curriculum. 3 Tier 2: Students have demonstrated a need or deficiency during a teacher-developed assessment. Tier 2 consists of supplemental instruction and interventions that are provided in addition to and in alignment with effective core instruction and behavioral supports to groups of targeted students who need additional instructional and/or behavioral support. Students may have needs as identified in the following categories: 1. Content student is demonstrating content/concepts and may need additional / alternative / differentiated instruction. Essential tools available for student assistance Tools may include: Supplemental instructional tools Supplemental teaching and re-teaching materials Differentiated instruction to supplement the curriculum Supplemental behavioral, reading, ESE and ESOL strategies. #2: Essential Tools Available for Supplemental instruction and interventions - Initiate RtI and the Collaborative Problem Solving Team Process: Identify one or more performance gaps as evidenced by student data. Student data might include Benchmark Assessment Tests and Mini Benchmark Assessments Extra support strategies with use of main instructional materials listed above in Tier 1 with emphasis on use of the hands-on inquiry-based science activities in the Broward County Hands-On Science Kits and Florida Science Fusion Inquiry lessons with additional support in small group setting Provide opportunities for student participation in hands-on science activities to build background knowledge and develop conceptual understanding prior to reading text On-level/Enrichment (to enrich unit concepts), with vocabulary, comprehension and oral reading fluency support practice students for Enrichment (Easy/Average) in Teacher Edition English Language Learners strategies in Teacher Edition at the front of each unit (Vocabulary Activity, Model Concepts, and Model Inquiry Skills) English Language Learners active reading, oral language development guidance for teachers in Teacher Edition throughout lessons Differentiation - Leveled Questions for Extra Support and Challenge levels in Teacher Edition throughout lessons

5 Tier 3: Students have demonstrated a need or deficiency during a teacher-developed assessment. The need illustrates developmental issues in basic fundamental skills necessary for success in the content. Tier 3 consists of intensive instructional or behavioral interventions provided in addition to and in alignment with effective core instruction with the goal of increasing an individual student s rate of progress. Tier 3 interventions are developed for individual students using a problem-solving process. Foundational skills may be identified in the following categories: 1. Content student is demonstrating content/concepts due to the lack of essential foundational content Essential tools available for Intensive instructional or behavioral interventions -Tools may include: Intensive modifications to curriculum Intensive materials for skill development Intensive behavioral modifications Intensive reading modifications Intensive ESE/ESOL modifications #3: Essential Tools Available for Student Assistance: After following the Collaborative Problem Solving Process for Tier II, review Tier II data and outcomes. Analyze data to determine why the Tier II intervention(s) has/have not been working. Tier III students may need additional interventions or modifications such as: - More explicit and systematic instruction - Additional instruction through extended learning opportunities - Push-in and pull out tutoring - A change in the focus, format, frequency and/or size of the instructional group to meet the individual student s needs Provide more frequent and ongoing monitoring of interventions and modifications as needed.
