3 3 Overweight and obesity defined: Abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health usually the result of an imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended. Michigan s obesity crisis: Michigan is ranked as the 5 th fattest state in 2012 (31% of adults are obese) If current trends continue, 50-60% of adults will be obese by 2030
4 Michigan s Health and Wellness 4 x 4 Plan 4 Goal: Every Michigander will adopt health as a personal core value; the 4 x 4 tool can be used to maintain and/or attain health 4x4 Behaviors and Measures: Maintain a healthy diet Engage in regular exercise Get annual physical exam Avoid tobacco use Body Mass Index (BMI) Blood pressure Cholesterol level Blood sugar level Statewide media campaign being developed.
5 Washtenaw County HIP and HIP Data 5 HIP is a countywide community assessment and planning collaborative. Purpose: to improve health in Washtenaw by facilitating partnerships, providing data, and developing strategies. 4 focus areas: healthy eating, physical activity, tobacco use reduction, & depression. HIP survey data on behavioral risk factors collected every 5 years. HIP is supported by the following agencies:

16 Root Cause: Infant Feeding Practices 16 National medical organizations promote 6 months exclusive breastfeeding followed by continued breastfeeding for at least one year. Healthy People 2020 breastfeeding goals: Ever: 81.9% Exclusively at 6 months: 25.5% Michigan Rates: Ever: 79.1% Exclusively at 6 months: 17.9% Washtenaw County WIC Rates: (Currently WIC serves over 50% of all infants born-fns/usda) Ever: 75% Exclusively at 6 months: 16.5%

22 Root Cause: Community Design & Built Environment 23 Children, including their diet and physical activity habits, are influenced by their surrounding environment. Social and economic development, as well as policies (in the areas of agriculture, transport, urban planning, environment, education, food processing, distribution and marketing), influence children's dietary habits and preferences, as well as their physical activity patterns. Increasingly, these influences are promoting unhealthy weight gain leading to a steady rise in the prevalence of childhood obesity.
