1 University of Delaware English Language Institute Changes to Pre-MA & Graduate Preparation Courses (Approved, December 2010) A. Summary of the Main Changes effective session III, All students admitted to UD s MA with conditional admission (CAP-MA) will follow the pre-ma course sequence. (The EAP route has been removed.) 2. The revised pre-ma courses are: L/S R/W Oral usiness Case Studies Grad VI RW Entrepreneurship GMAT/GRE Preparation GMAT/GRE Prep replaces MA Essentials. Managerial Communication has been dropped. 3. GMAT/GRE Prep will be offered each session, subject to enrollment and at the discretion of the administration. The pre-ma L/S classes will continue to alternate. 4. All other graduate CAP students will be required to take at least: L/S R/W EAP V EAP V Grad VI Grad VI Graduate CAP students who have not met their GRE requirement are encouraged to take GMAT/GRE Preparation in addition. (Grad VI LS currently the same as EAP VI LS.) 5. Please see figures 1-4 for a summary of course sequences. 6. New student placement will continue to allow for prospective MA students to be placed into level VI pre-ma classes (usually Grad VI plus OCS/Entrepreneurship). 7. All qualified students are welcome to take the pre-ma and graduate courses, subject to prerequisites and availability. CAP students should have priority if sections are full. 8. Due to the complexity of this proposal, the multiple possible paths students can follow, and the need to grandfather current students into our revised program, an ELI faculty or administrator may be appointed at the Director s discretion as graduate/ma advisor to oversee graduate placement, course selection, and advising, at least until the Assistant Director for EAP is appointed. The Director and CAP Coordinator have the final responsibility for approving students for graduation from the ELI. * Please note that students in EAP V RW or level VI in session II, 2010, may be grand-fathered in under the old requirements; they should contact Laurie Fuhrman or Deb Detzel for advising.. Placement 1. Oral interviewers and essay raters should continue to give an EAP V or level VI placement to students who clearly warrant it. 2. Retesting: New students who place into level V and retest must meet the pre-requisites outlined in C, below. Proctors at retesting should identify these students and alert the Associate Director for EAP and the Assistant Director (and the Graduate Advisor, see A.8, above). 1
2 C. Pre-Requisites (please see also figures 1-4) Please note that all students (CAP or non-cap) must meet the pre-reqs in order to ensure a consistent instructional level in these courses. A completed undergraduate degree is a pre-requisite for all the following courses, plus: 1. Reading/Writing for Graduate Programs [Grad VI RW]: (for all prospective graduate students; offered every session) a. Completion of EAP V RW with b. OR: Passing General VI RW c. OR for pre-ma students only: Completion of General V RW or Advanced Written usiness V RW with no skill grade below and a 6 in the final essay as judged by two raters, one of whom has previously taught Grad VI RW. (Non-MA CAP students must take EAP V before Grad VI.) d. OR: Initial placement at EAP V or level VI and retesting followed by a recommendation from the classroom teacher and, if possible, the Grad VI RW faculty. 2. GMAT/GRE Preparation RW: (pre-ma and some other graduates; offered every session subject to demand and administrative discretion) a. For CAP students: At least one session in Grad VI RW (or EAP VI RW) b. Non-CAP students with a level VI RW placement may take this course at any time 3. Grad VI LS: (usually for non-ma graduate students; offered every session subject to demand EAP VI LS is substituted if this class does not run) a. Completion of EAP V LS with b. OR: Passing a level VI general/culture-track class c. OR: Initial placement clearly at level VI d. OR: Placement in EAP V LS, strong level VI retest results, and teacher recommendation 4. Oral usiness Case Studies [OCS LS]: (prema; offered in odd-numbered sessions) a. Completion of EAP V LS with b. OR: Completion of Advanced Oral usiness V LS with e. OR: Passing a level VI general/culture-track class c. OR: Initial placement clearly at level VI d. OR: Placement in a level V LS class, strong level VI retest results, and teacher recommendation 5. Entrepreneurship LS: (prema; offered in even-numbered sessions) a. Completion of EAP V LS or Advanced Oral usiness (level V LS) with b. Passing a level VI general/culture-track class c. OR: Initial placement clearly at level 6 d. OR: Placement in a level V LS class, strong level 6 retest results, and teacher recommendation e. AND: concurrent placement in a level VI RW class (students not meeting this pre-requisite should be placed in Grad VI LS. This does not delay their graduation from the ELI.) 2
3 D. Grades and CAP Requirements 1. Since the pre-ma consists of 4 modules, students must meet the CAP requirement as follows: Skill CAP requirement Earned in Reading + Grad VI RW Writing + Grad VI RW Final essay 6.5 or 7 In any session at level VI Grammar + Grad VI Listening + Either OCS or Entrepreneurship Speaking + Either OCS or Entrepreneurship 2. No requirements may be completed in the test prep class because the learning outcomes are tied to the tests not to the ELI curricular objectives. 3. Grad VI is offered every session, and may be repeated until students meet the requirement. 4. Since OCS and Entrepreneurship alternate, the plan above will keep students on track to complete pre-ma in two sessions providing their LS skills meet the requirements before matriculation. However, we need to make it clear to students who meet the requirement in OCS that they must still attain acceptable grades in Entrepreneurship (or vice versa). 5. Other (non-ma) Grad-CAP students must meet the existing requirement: + in all skill areas in Grad VI RW and LS. 6. All CAP students must still receive an effort score of 1 or 2 in the final session. E. Exemptions 1. Pre-MA students who have already met the GMAT requirement for their chosen university may be exempted from the GMAT/GRE Preparation course. However, they must still meet all U.S. visa requirements for enrollment. The CAP Coordinator must confirm this situation with the student s university. 2. Students who cannot meet the RW requirements in Grad VI RW after two sessions may take another approved RW class (e.g. EAP VI). 3. Students who have taken both OCS and Entrepreneurship without meeting the LS requirement may meet the requirement by passing Grad VI LS with + in both skills, after consultation with the CAP coordinator, Director, or Graduate Advisor. 4. Under certain circumstances, students may be able to take only one class in their last session at the ELI. This is subject to U.S. visa regulations and requires the approval of the Associate Director for EAP or the Director. The advisory committee is considering a separate proposal to update the policy on exemption from Level VI classes. F. Syllabus Revision Revised syllabi for OCS, Entrepreneurship, and GMAT/GRE Preparation with student learning outcomes must be approved by the curriculum committee before each course is next offered. 3
