1 PRODUCT NAME NALCO WT-265 Cooling Water Scale and Corrosion Inhibitor PRODUCT DESCRIPTION AND APPLICATION Nalco WT-265 is designed for use in systems with recirculating water calcium concentrations greater than 300 ppm (as CaCO 3 ) at the targeted cycles when the ph is typically greater than 8.7. Because Nalco WT- 265 contains no molybdate or zinc, it should be considered as a more environmentally friendly chemistry to meet the regulatory needs of many customers. Nalco WT-265 is a balanced blend of corrosion and scale inhibitors designed for use in open recirculating water systems. Nalco WT-265 contains: Proprietary blend of phosphonate inhibitors for both threshold level scale and corrosion inhibitors. They are particularly applicable to systems where calcium carbonate and/or sulfate scales are likely. Proprietary High Stress Polymer dispersant. Benzotriazole (BZT) for copper corrosion inhibition. Nalco WT-265 is designed to operate at high alkalinity, minimizing or eliminating the need for acid feed. Corrosion protection is provided by specific organic phosphate derivatives binding to the ferrous corrosion sites and from the protection provided by operating at a higher alkalinity. Nalco WT-265 is intended to be used by heavy industry customers only. Because Nalco WT-265 is one part of an integrated 3D TRASAR program, the optimum results may be determined with the aid of the Nalco to develop a customized program for the local water chemistry and operational parameters. The "All-Organic" program is effective over a broad range of application parameters. It is best in systems where the M alkalinity will naturally cycle or can be adjusted into the ppm range. Generally, the ph will be in the range of The calcium level in the recirculating water should be ppm (as CaCO 3 ). DOSAGE REQUIREMENTS Nalco WT-265 must be fed continuously to maintain ppm in the recirculating water. For effective results, the product dosage should be determined after considering the recirculating water characteristics and system temperature by using the All-Organic control guidelines listed in Table 1 and Figure 1. The effectiveness of the All-Organic Program is reduced in systems outside a specific range of alkalinity and calcium hardness. Figure 1 shows the maximum concentrations of calcium and M alkalinity of which the product is effective. Note that the product requires a minimum of 80 ppm of calcium hardness and 300 ppm of alkalinity. If necessary, supplemental caustic can be fed to the system to achieve the required alkalinity levels. 4 PRODUCT FEEDING AND PROGRAM COMPATIBILITY Before recommending the use of a 3D TRASAR technology-based program, background fluorescence in the system must be determined. The background fluorescence, as ppm of product = BF X product factor X If background fluorescence, as ppm product, is less than 15% of the recommended product dosage, this application can use 3D TRASAR technology. If the background fluorescence, as ppm product, is greater than 15% of the recommended product dosage, post your specific conditions in the WWTS Global Water Technical Forum. Nalco WT-265 should be fed via a closed feed system. A closed feed system is defined as a system in which fluid is moved from a closed storage vessel into a treated media without exposure to the atmosphere except through normal venting or pressure relief devices. Nalco WT-265 should be fed neat. Do not dilute the product or mix with other chemicals. Unstable reactions may occur that can deteriorate the product s effectiveness. Nalco WT-265 must be fed continuously to assure adequate levels of chemical residual are maintained at all times. Slug feeding must be avoided because it will result in periods of high and low levels of chemical residual. Since Nalco WT-265 operates at high calcium, M-Alkalinity, and ph levels, low chemical residuals can result in scaling conditions. High chemical levels can result in product precipitation. Nalco WT-265 must be fed where rapid mixing will occur, and be distributed throughout the system. Feeding to a location just prior to the suction side of the circulating water pump is recommended. Do not feed two products at the same application point where localized product mixing can occur, since unwanted reactions may occur. The phosphonates in Nalco WT-265 are sensitive to high halogen levels. Product degradation can occur, and should be monitored to ensure adequate CaCO 3 inhibition. Nalco WT-265 contains anionic materials; do not feed cationic materials with this program. TESTING AND CONTROL This product contains a tracer material that allows it to be controlled with 3D TRASAR Technology. Proper set-up and calibration of 3D TRASAR equipment is absolutely required. Use the equation and table below to determine the proper calibration solution for WT-265. Nalco WT-265 is an acidic product and can cause eye and skin irritation. Chemical-resistant gloves and safety goggles should be worn when handling Nalco WT-265. Avoid breathing the solution spray. Do not take internally. STORAGE Nalco WT-265 should be stored in a location where the product temperature can be kept in a range between -2 C (28 F) and 49 C (120 F).
