1 Unit L20.2 Lower Primary Lessons on the Spot One Day Activity Pack Blake s Topic Bank by Peter Clutterbuck This ready-to-use set of activities contains: 2 pages of teaching notes in an integrated teaching sequence 6 blackline masters with fun, practical activities an answer page for all activities
2 Teaching Notes Language Teaching Notes What Pet? (BLM 1) Discuss the pets that students own. Ask each to describe their pet and why it is special. Ask questions such as: If you wanted a pet to ride, what pet might you get? If you wanted a pet to cuddle a lot because it had soft fur, what pet might you get? Distribute and explain BLM 1. Have students identify each pet before commencing. Early finishers could draw a picture of their pet, or a picture of the pet they would like. Skills: Vocabulary and visual discrimination Buster Bunny (BLM 2) Find out if any of the students own, or have owned, a pet rabbit. Ask them to explain what is special about having a rabbit as a pet, and to describe how they feed and care for it. Distribute BLM 2. Read through the passage with the students. Ask them questions such as: What name would you have given to the bunny? Apart from lettuces and carrots, what other things could you feed the rabbit? Ask students to complete the activity. Skills: Comprehension, word recognition and spelling (double letters) Mathematics Find the Owner (BLM 3) Begin this activity with some brisk counting, using a counting frame. Have the students count orally in 2s, 3s, 4s etc. On the board, provide some short examples of addition. Reinforce the meaning of the addition sign (+). Distribute and explain BLM 3. 3 Buried Bones (BLM 4) Teaching Notes On the board, write a selection of numerals, for example: Discuss what is mean by even and odd numbers. Ask individual students to come forward and circle an even, or odd, number. Distribute BLM 4. Ask the class as a whole to consider the first sum (8 + 6). Write the answer (14) on the board. Ask the students whether this number is odd or even. Since it is even, the students should colour that bone. Move around as students complete the rest of the sheet. Have another list of numbers ready on the board. Early finishers could classify these as odd or even. Skills: Addition and recognition of odd/even numbers SOSE Suitable (BLM 5) Discuss the pets that students have at home. Write the pet types on the board; for example, kitten, dog, pony, goldfish. Ask each student to nominate a favourite pet. Then ask: If you could have any pet, which would you choose? Why? Find out if any students have unusual pets, e.g. hermit crab, Mexican walking fish. If so, ask them to describe how they feed and care for it. For example, ask: Does it need special food? What makes it better than a dog or cat? Do people in different places have different pets? Why? Can you have any animal as a pet? Why not? Distribute and explain BLM 5. Skills: Selecting appropriate information Pet Story (BLM 6) Ask if any students have pets that have been entered in shows. Discuss how students might prepare a puppy or kitten for a pet show, e.g. washing, brushing etc. Distribute BLM 6 and discuss what is happening in each picture before students complete the sequencing activity. 5 Language Buster Bunny BLM 2 Last Monday was Sanjay s birthday. He was seven years old. When he got home from school, his mother told him there was a special present for him in the garage. When he went to the garage, Sanjay saw a large cardboard box. It had a red ribbon around it. Sanjay undid the ribbon and carefully opened the box. Inside, he saw a small black bundle. It was a furry rabbit. Sanjay picked up the rabbit and cuddled it. I m going to call you Buster Bunny, he said. Each day, Sanjay fed Buster carrots and lettuces. He kept Buster in a small yard at the back of the house. Buster likes to play with Sanjay s brown puppy, Bones. A. The Right Word Circle the correct word in the brackets. 1.
