1 The Paw Pride January 2016 THE PAW PRIDE BH ISSUE 18 January 2016 Another Successful Winter Rewards Day! Beverly Hills hosted another Great Rewards Day! Rewards days are hosted four times a year. They are part of the PBIS incentive rewards program and hosted each marking period. The criteria to attend these rewards days are based on the PBIS matrix.. At this year winter rewards day, BH students rotated to three different locations. In the front gym, student athletes faced off against staff in a game called Bosch Ball. The staff won all three games against each grade level. In the auditorium, Mr. Kearns hosted a variety of Minute to Win it games. It was fun to watch students and staff participate in these silly activities. Finally, Mr. Casertano (aka Buddy the Elf) hosted a dance party in the back gym with his latest musical hits. Rewards Days remind students that teachers are proud of their focus and determination toward the Positive Behavior Intervention and Support program. They notice their hard work in the classroom and other school sponsored activities. Beverly Hills rewards their students with these special rewards days. Great Job BHMS students and staff. 2 Every year, during the holiday season at BH, if you walk past the music suite, on your way into school, or after school, or at lunch, you are likely to hear the sounds of festive singing. That is sound of the students in Choralations preparing for their Winter Concert. But, one day every year, during this same holiday season, you will walk by and hear silence. That is because on one special day every year, Choralations takes their music and cheer to a very special place: the Children and Adults with Disabilities Education Services, or CADES. CADES is a school in Swarthmore for people with intellectual and physical disabilities like Cerebral Palsy. We sing all of our songs from our Winter concert, but the best part happens in between those songs. We invite the students to sing carols with us, and we leave the stage and mingle with our new friends. We sing songs like Jingle Bells, and Silent Night, and Rudolph. We have fun, and laugh and sing together, like one big happy family. We leave when it s over, and we know that we have made a difference for them, but quickly realize, that they have made a difference for us. Issue 18 2

3 Endangered Species Prints As the second marking period comes to an end, students in Mr. Holford s Printmaking elective have accumulated a portfolio of work. Printmaking is the process of making artworks by printing, normally on paper. Printmaking is the process of creating artistic copies by hand. Each print is an original artwork. Students spend 90 days learning about and creating prints using different printmaking techniques. One of the most memorable prints that students created was of an endangered or threatened specie. Students researched endangered species, and selected one that seemed interesting to them. The animals chosen ranged from small birds to large cats. When printed, they were not always completed in the color the animal actually is, but that ís part of the fun! Students tried many different color combinations when creating their prints. A friendly reminder that anyone interested in Printmaking Club (open to those that cannot take Printmaking Elective), our first meeting will after school on January 26 th in room 3! Issue 18 3

4 T H E B H B R A G Over the past three years, Beverly Hills has promoted, established and successfully implemented a positive and rewarding learning environment. These implementations have included a CORE team, PBIS and other positive initiatives. An initiative last year was to welcome students to school with a motivational instrumental song on the loud speaker, after which students say the pledge of allegiance. This year, after the pledge, we have added The BH Brag! The BH Brag is a way to start the day on a positive note by celebrating each other! Every morning, Mrs. Hally reads the BH Brag. Students, teachers, principals, school board members and even parents have been bragging about each other since BH Brags started in late September. So far, Mrs. Hally has read over 450 brags! Grade level administrators occasionally submit silver brags, and every Friday Mrs. Simone submits a very special brag called the Golden Brag. Sanya wants to brag about Jazeem because he was really nice to me in the hallway and I want to say thank you for that! Someone would like to brag about Yasmeen because Whenever I am having a hard time in math she always comes and helps me and comforts me. She is a good friend. Shakira wants to brag about Mrs. Byrnes For being the best teacher and encouraging me to do my best. Have you written a brag yet? Did you know we are getting close to the 500 th brag? 5 Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a day for honoring and reflecting on Dr. King and his non-violent activism and demonstration to successfully eliminate segregation. People around the USA honor this day by serving their communities. Beverly Hills Middle School also participates by serving the Upper Darby Community. Student on the Penn Quakers team pack lunches for the homeless. The students start by writing letters to those less fortunate. They then decorate brown bags using a variety of art supplies. These bags have little notes, slogans, or pictures intended to positively encourage our homeless community. Students use an assembly line to make bologna and cheese sandwiches. After which, they put together lunches that included the sandwiches, oranges, cookies, and more. This is a tradition has occurred for the past 13 years at Beverly Hills. We are so proud of our students for participating in this and other community service events. Issue 18 5
