The DeSales University MBA Program continues its commitment to stay at the forefront of technology in business by offering courses completely online. Using Blackboard, the worldwide web, and a PC or laptop, you have the flexibility to take courses at home or at any other location in the world! Class structures differ with instructors and courses, but generally involve a combination of online chat sessions, internet research, independent reading and projects. Also, don t be surprised if you find yourself in a class conducting projects in collaboration with MBA students in other parts of the world. DeSales has developed partnerships with many international institutions including universities in Peru, India, Botswana, and Romania. Students and instructors value the knowledge gained from our global partners. CONCENTRATIONS The following concentrations can be completed online without ever having to visit any of the university s campuses. 1 Health Care Systems Management 2 International Sport Management 3 Management 4 Marketing 5 Project Management 6 Self-Design We have been delivering online courses for many years and are currently using Blackboard as our online course-management tool. Blackboard allows students to easily access their course wherever Internet connectivity is available. Blackboard provides online resources, enhances collaboration and interactivity among instructors and students. As an online student, you will be assigned an advisor who will guide you through your MBA journey. You will be learning from the same instructors that teach on the various campuses, using the same curriculum and the same textbooks. The same work is required by the online students, the difference is the convenience of being able to take a class from any location. Instructors have the ability to customize their course content and delivery. Blackboard also can be used to augment traditional classes.we have recently added an audio platform so that faculty and students can converse with each other over the internet. With the use of this technology, the instructor and students will actually talk to each other, bringing the learning experience much closer to that of the in-class experience. Depending on your background, it is possible to complete the program in as little as 18 months. And, when you complete your MBA, it is our hope that you can come to the Center Valley campus and take part in the graduation ceremony with your entire graduating class. When I learned that the program could be done completely online I was sold. I needed a program that allowed for flexibility and accessibility via online. My schedule does not run 9-5 so, with the web program, I know that if I get tied up at work until class time all I need to do is log on, and I am ready to go. I believe continuing education is key and I enjoy the fact that I never have to choose which is more important, my job or class. With this program, I have the best of both worlds. 13 MBA Overview The MBA Program is designed to prepare students for leadership positions in the management of business enterprises, government agencies, health care organizations, or not-for-profit organizations. Distinguishing characteristics of the Program are its emphasis on executive skills development, its general management orientation, its aim of integrating skills and values, its explicit attempt to link theory and practice, and its underlying sensitivity to the Christian-Humanist history and traditions of the University. The intent of the Program is to provide students with the foundations for socially useful and professionally rewarding careers in a globalized and flattening world. The training of narrow, technical specialists is not a primary goal; the development of corporate and community leaders is. LEARNING OUTCOMES The MBA Program is intended to provide students with a sophisticated level of understanding of the basic functional areas of business, as well as an appreciation of the role of business in our pluralistic society and the global community in which it exists. The ethical dimension of personal and corporate behavior and decision-making will be stressed throughout the Program. More specifically, students will: 1 gain an understanding of organizations as complex systems which function within a broader social, political, and economic environment; 2 attain an ability to comprehend the forces at work and to operate within a dynamic, economic, technological, social, legal, and political environment, one increasingly global in scope; 3 receive a balanced exposure to theory and practice which will foster an enhanced capability to conceptualize, synthesize, and integrate diverse inputs of both quantitative and qualitative data; 4 develop a heightened sensitivity to the subjective, value-laden, ethical dimensions of executive behavior and decision-making within the context of the Christian-Humanist traditions of the University; 5 cultivate a greater sensitivity to the complexity and importance of human resource management, and an enhancement of personal leadership skills; 6 acquire a theoretically sound yet operationally useful understanding of the various functions of business management, from an integrated, systems perspective; 7 consummate an action-oriented, graduate level grasp of an area of professional specialization; 8 complete a graduate level competency in the use of analytical tools and techniques necessary for effective decision-making and problem-solving in complex organizations; and 9 recognize a desire to move beyond mere problem-solving toward the capability to become creative opportunity-seekers in a dynamically changing and increasingly interdependent world MBA-EXCEL 11
