Faith through what is worn: Icthus comes from the Greek word for fish, it also stands for Jesus Christ, God s Son, Saviour Christians use the sign of the fish as it reminds them of Jesus and tells other people that they are Christians The crucifix helps Christians to remember Jesus suffering on the cross for them. Vestments are what the vicar and priest wear in church when they lead Christians to worship. They remind Christians their service if holy. The hijab is worn by Muslim females. It looks like a head scarf. humble. They dress modestly. 3 The (e) question: Faith is a personal thing; no one has the right to tell you what to wear. Do you agree? Give reasons for your answer, showing you have thought of more than one point of view. Expressing faith through symbols in a place of worship Lectern In some Christian churches the pulpit if wear the vicar (priest or preacher) stands, and the the lectern is where the Bible is read. The altar is the focal point of the church and reminds Christians of the table where Jesus ate his last supper and where Christians today can share the Holy Communion, the bread and wine. The cross is the most important symbol because it reminds Christians that Jesus gave his life to save people from sin, and gave them everlasting life. Stained glass windows usually contain pictures of biblical scenes from the lives of saints. These pictures help Christians to remember important events and people in the past. Statues and images help Christians to pray. They do not worship statues but it helps them to focus e.g. Mary the mother of Jesus helps Christians to focus on the virtues like love and humility. Religious paintings Give two reasons why a religious believer might agree or disagree with are this a distraction statement. [4] Islam symbolism in their place of worship. Muslims worship in the Mosque. It is a place of prayer. Prayer is part of a Muslims daily life. They are required to pray 5 times a day. The place must be clean and symbols or furniture are unnecessary as the Muslim must focus on Allah (God). It is designed very simple and with no distractions. Muslims are not allowed any image of Allah, it is strictly forbidden. They believe that no human can possibly know what Allah is like. They believe that only Allah can create humans so they must not have any pictures of people around them when they are worshipping. Nothing must distract them from Allah. Mosques are still very attractive places because there will be writings from the Quran, pictures of the holy city of Makkah and geometrical patterns. Beautiful calligraphy art work with words of the Quran are seen on the walls. Muslims face the holy city of Makkah when they pray. The direction is shown by the mihrab, which is an alcove. All Muslims have a prayer mat to help them pray 5 times a day. They also have a tashib (prayer beads) set of 99 beads to help them pray. 3

This is often seen on the top of the mosque as well as inside them. This symbol is a reminder to Muslims of the guiding hand of Allah - the moon and the fivepointed star represent the light provided by Allah. The Church The Church may be used for many different things: Sunday Worship, Midweek services, Sunday School, Bible study, Cubs/Brownies/Scouts/Guides, Ladies Groups, Coffee Mornings, Young Marrieds Groups, Choir Practice. It is also used for: Baptisms, Confirmation, Weddings, Funerals, special services or private devotions.
