2 An insight into the Year 1 Curriculum Miss Terry and Mrs Hemsley

4 Phonics To help children to identify sounds in words to blend together for reading. To help children to select the correct sounds to spell words.

5 Some key vocabulary. Phoneme single unit of sound. Grapheme the written phoneme. Digraph a phoneme containing 2 letters paint. Trigraph a phoneme containing 3 letters night. Split Digraph a phoneme where a vowel and the letter e are split by a consonant - like

6 Letters and Sounds. Phase 1 sound discrimination, rhythm and rhyme, alliteration, blending and segmenting. Phase 2 moving from oral blending and segmenting to using letters. Phase 3 introducing more digraphs and reading 2- syllable words and captions. Phase 4 consolidating the children s learning leading into phase 5. Phase 5 learning alternative pronunciations & spellings and the use of some prefixes and suffixes Phase 6 developing fluency and accuracy.

7 Year 1 phonic test. Takes place at the end of Year 1. All schools must administer the test in the same week. The check is administered 1:1 with a teacher and child. The results of the test are used to regulate the teaching of phonics in schools across the country and ensure schools are teaching children what they need to know.

8 Year 1 phonic test. Section 1. Words made up of single letters like zog, man. Words that contain simple digraphs shop, car, soon.

9 Year 1 phonic test. Section 2. Words containing the digraphs ph and wh where. phoob, Words that contain more complex digraphs away, beach, stew. Words that contain split digraphs made, June, theme. Words that contain trigraphs chair, right.

13 Reading Word Decoding The expectation for word and sentence decoding at the end of Year 1 is Apply phonics Recognise all graphemes taught and know phonemes Blend unfamiliar words Read common exception words: they, said, once, friend, school etc Read words with the endings: -ing, -ed, -s, -es, -est Read words of more than one syllable Read simple contractions and know apostrophe represents missing letter(s): I m, can t, we ll, he s, she s etc Read phonetically decodable books Read alien words with accuracy: vat, chep, struep, blighm, greme

14 Reading Comprehension The expectation for understanding at the end of Year 1 is Listen, discuss and enjoy a range of poems and stories beyond independent reading level Become familiar with key stories, fairy stories and traditional tales retelling & know characteristics Link reading to own experiences Recognise and join in with predictable phrases in poems and stories Appreciate some rhymes and poems; recite some by heart Discuss meanings of new words Listen, discuss and enjoy a range of non-fiction texts. Check that texts make sense: self-correct and re-read inaccurate reading. Talk about the significance of the title and events. Infer on the basis of what is said and done. Make predictions. Participate in discussion about what is read Explain clearly their understanding of what is read

15 Writing Handwriting The expectation for handwriting and presentation at the end of Year 1 is Most letters correctly formed and orientated: including lower case, capital letters and digits. Capital letters for names of people, places and the days of the week Spaces left between words Letters sit on the line correctly Cursive Correct pencil grip

16 Writing Spelling The expectation for spelling at the end of Year 1 is Write simple dictated sentences containing taught graphemes Spell words containing all 40+ phonemes Spell words using prefix un- e.g. unhappy, unfair and suffixes ing, - ed, -er and est where no change is made to the root word Spell most common exception words correctly Recognise and spell simple compound words: lunchbox, outside Understand difference between singular and plural adding suffixes s and es to words: e.g. cats, witches, catches. Name the letters of the alphabet in order Writing must be able to be read

17 Writing Punctuation The expectation for punctuating sentences at the end of Year 1 is Write sentences which can be clearly understood Use and to join and connect ideas Use a capital letter and full stop to show sentence boundaries Sometimes use question marks or exclamation marks Use a capital letter for the names of people and places, days of the week, and for the personal pronoun I Include adjectives for description Begin to use some features of Standard English e.g. I did.

18 Writing Composition The expectation for structure and purpose at the end of Year 1 is Compose sentences orally before writing: word order Write appropriately to the task Sequence simple sentences to form short narratives based on real or fictional experiences Compose orally and write simple poems Re-read writing to check it makes sense Discuss own writing with others; make simple changes where suggested

23 To be secure by the end of Year 1: Number Write numbers to 20 in words Recognise numbers to 100 Count in multiples of 2s, 5s and 10s More and less Use + - and = symbols Number bonds to 20 Add and subtract 1 and 2 digit numbers Solve addition and subtraction problems using pictures and objects Solve multiplication and division problems using pictures and objects. Arrays Fractions: halves and quarters Beyond this children need to be able to explain their methods, answers and reasoning.

24 Geometry To be secure by the end of Year 1: 2D shapes 3D shapes Positional language Directional language Movement including turns To go beyond children need to be able to compare and explain.

25 Measure To be secure by the end of Year 1: Compare, describe and solve problems using length, weight, capacity, time. Tell the time to the hour and half past the Hour. Recognise different coins and notes. Sequence events in chronological order. Use language relating to dates.
