DRILL BOOK Hitters should constantly work on improving their balance and posture throughout their swings. To be a great hitter, it s a must to maintain balance and posture. A pitcher s job is to get hitters off balance to create a no contact or bad contact situation. They accomplish that by locating their pitches on the edge of the strike zone. To combat that, hitters should use the JUGS High-Low Hitting Tee in your daily hitting routine. The High-Low Hitting Tee gives hitters the opportunity to work on every possible pitch location. Pitches that are located at the top or bottom of the strike zone are the toughest for hitters to maintain balance and posture. With the JUGS High-Low Hitting Tee you re able to train on those locations and every location in between. HIT THE BALL WHERE IT S PITCHED! SM
High-Low Tee Drills were compiled by Oregon State University assistant coach Pat Bailey. Pat Bailey is in his fourth season with the Beavers. Bailey came to Oregon State prior to the 2008 season after spending 12 seasons at George Fox, winning a Division III national title with the Bruins in Bailey, 53, compiled a record and earned National Coach of the Year honors after that 2004 national title. He was also named the Northwest Conference Coach of the Year eight times. During Bailey s tenure, the Bruins won or shared eight Northwest Conference titles. George Fox advanced to the NCAA tournament six times and to the NAIA playoffs twice before moving to the NCAA. George Fox did not have a losing season during Bailey s time at the school, and he is the winningest baseball coach in the school s history. The Northwest Conference shifted from the NAIA to the NCAA in 2000, and since then the Bruins rank among the nation s top 20 schools at that level in wins with a record. In 2004, Bailey s team became the first George Fox squad in any sport to win an NCAA national championship. The Bruins went overall, setting a new singleseason record for wins and tying the record for best winning percentage at.800. After tying for the 2004 NWC title, George Fox earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. The Bruins swept through four games at the NCAA West Regional in Orange, Calif., and then posted a 5-1 record at the Division III World Series in Appleton, Wis., beating Eastern Connecticut State 6-3 in the championship game. All nine of George Fox s postseason wins came against nationally ranked teams, and four of its five wins in the World Series were against pitchers who were first- or second-team All-Americans. Seven of Bailey s George Fox players signed professional contracts, including five members of the national championship team. His players earned 10 All-America honors and four Academic All-America honors. At George Fox, he was also associate director of athletics, director of the Bruin Athletic Association for athletic support, chair of the school s Sports Hall of Fame committee, and a teacher in the Department of Business and Economics. Bailey earned his business education degree from the University of Idaho in 1978 and his master of education degree in educational administration from the University of Oregon in Bailey earned two letters in baseball at Idaho and was the team captain JUGS Sports 2
Introduction A. The position of the hitter in relation to the JUGS 5-Point High-Low Hitting Tee should be as follows: 1. The center of the hitter s body should be lined-up with the back tip of the home plate. 2. Feet should be approximately 24 inches back from the center of the home plate. 3. This basic position is only a suggested starting point. Adjustments from this position may be necessary due to the player s size, the length of the bat, etc. B. The hitter should keep his/her head down and eye on the tee, after the ball is hit, to prevent head pulling and taking the eye off the ball. C. Regardless of the location of the pitch (inside, middle, outside), the swing and the stride remain the same. Only the point of contact changes. D. In all swings, the hands stay inside the ball... Hitter, hands, ball this creates a quick, compact swing. E. Place the protective screen so that it touches the front of the JUGS 5-Point High-Low Hitting Tee so that the ball may be hit into it. F. The optimum number of swings before a hitter should take a short rest or switch with a partner, is (depending on age and skill level.) G. The JUGS 5-Point High-Low Hitting Tee can also be adjusted to be used for regular tee drills (by using the high end of the high tee tube.) You can t square a ball up without proper balance in your swing. Albert Pujols 3
Long Tee Location Drill Hitting in space so that you can see what the ball does. Outside: backspin opposite field gap Middle: backspin up the middle Inside: backspin pull side gap Procedure: When hitting off Tees on the field or inside, you want to hit real leather balls if possible. You need at least 20 yards inside hitting into a drop net. If you are hitting outside, the infield is a great area to set up this drill. Set the buckets up as targets as shown. Hitting in space allows you to watch what the ball is doing (top spin, side spin, or back spin.) What the ball does of a bat will tell hitters what is going on with their swing path. This is a great way to evaluate and teach proper swing mechanics. 4
HIGH TEE LOCATION FOR UP THE MIDDLE HIGH FOR INSIDE PULL GAP HIGH FOR OUTSIDE OPPOSITE FIELD GAP 5
Walk-Up Drill High or Low Tee This drill focuses on teaching the hitter that the swing begins with the lower half (ballistic lower half). Posture must be maintained. Procedure: Set up in a hitting stance approximately six feet back behind the Tee. Begin by stepping with stride foot, back foot back steps and crosses behind front foot, stride into firm front side and swing. 6
Hop-Stride-Hit Drill High or Low Tee You want your weight to stay between your feet when you hit. The key: Head over belly button between balls of feet. Procedure: Keep you butt between our knees and your knees between your feet. When you load, you want weight to shift into the inside of your back leg. Feel the weight on the inside thigh (this will keep you athletic.) Hopping onto your back leg with weight staying inside the thigh emphasizes the weight staying stacked inside your feet. Please visit jugssports.com for drills and coaching tips from some of the best coaches from around the nation. 7
High-Inside Drill High Tee Purpose High-Inside Tee forces the hitter to maintain posture from set up to finish. This drill is particularly good for hitters who dive into the plate and collapse the back side. Important: Keep your hands inside the ball. 8
Low-Outside Drill Low Tee For most players, this is the hardest ball for them to hit. From a tracking viewpoint, it is furthest away from the eyes. You must maintain posture (you will hook the ball if you lose posture.) The ball should be hit with backspin into the opposite field gap. Please visit jugssports.com for drills and coaching tips from some of the best coaches from around the nation. 9
Anti-Bat-Wrap Drill Bat waggle Vertical Back and Forth vs. Flat WRONG RIGHT WRONG RIGHT Learning to load with your hands and not your wrists. Also, loading vertically creates a short route to contact with your hands. 10
Inside-Outside Drill High and Low Tee Teaches hitters to take the same stride towards the pitcher. Hips will open in relation to the location of the pitch. The hands take the same route to the ball. Procedure: When striding, call outside or inside hit the location called. 11
Energy-to-Target Drill High or Low Tee Back foot should end up with shoe laces pointing towards the ground. You get good backside thrust towards the pitcher vs. squishing the bug. Procedure: Energy to target ballistic back side (put an object directly behind back foot. Example: helmet cannot hit the helmet.) 12
Towel Drill High and Low Tee You want to keep your front side on line as long as possible and be short to the contact zone. Towel will come out and should go towards the pitcher if a hitter has ballistic movement towards the pitcher Procedure: Place rolled up towel under front arm pit towel must be thrown toward pitcher when hitting. 13
Downhill-Slope Drill High or Low Tee The hitter will feel energy going into the ball. It forces hitters to stay on line and not break down on the backside. You can use a portable mound or get on a small hill for this drill. Procedure: Set up in a hitting stance on a downward slope. 14
Uphill-Slope Drill High and Low Tee Stay tall on the backside and hit into a firm frontside. A hitter who has a hard time staying between his feet and his frontside comes off the ball quick. This will force the hitter to stay between his feet and keep his frontside open. Procedure: Set up in a hitting stance on a upward slope. 15
