Associate of Science with a major in nursing to provide eligibility for registered nurse licensure All traditional tracks Alternate track through Continuing Education 2. Bachelor of Science with a major in nursing for registered nurses seeking baccalaureate completion All traditional tracks Distance learning track through Continuing Education For required sequence of courses see students must fulfill University academic requirements listed in the catalog as well as additional requirements identified in the 359 Department of Student Handbook. The Student Handbook can be found on the Homepage. Associate of Science Degree in This two-year program is designed to prepare the student for the professional nurse board examination (NCLEX-RN). Upon completion of the nursing curriculum, the graduate will utilize the Department of s philosophy as a guide for holistic nursing care and be prepared to: Stewardship 1. Demonstrate accountability for nursing practice. 2. Assume responsibility for personal and professional stewardship goals. Knowledge 3. Administer holistic nursing care for patients with identified health problems across the lifespan. 4. Apply knowledge to further education. 5. Utilize nursing research. Professionalism 6. Acknowledge the role of professional organizations in advancing nursing practice. Critical Thinking 7. Utilize critical thinking in providing safe and appropriate nursing care. Caring 8. Recognize and develop caring attitudes and relationships. Process 9. Utilize the nursing process to develop a plan of care. Application Process Only students accepted to Brigham Young University-Idaho will be considered for admission to the Program. Applicants must submit official high school and college transcripts to the Brigham Young University Idaho Student Records and Registration Office and the Department of. (Note: failure to receive an applicant s official transcripts by application deadline will invalidate the application and the student will not be considered for admission to the program.) Applications for the program are available on the web or at the nursing office. All students with English as a second language will be required to pass the TOEFL Examination with a minimum score of: written exam computer based web based Students should check their local colleges/universities for availability. Admission Criteria 1. Students must have completed one academic semester at the university level (does not include concurrent enrollment or AP credit) with a minimum of 12 credits before applying. 2. Minimum GPA for application is 3.5. It is noted that in recent semesters successful applicants have had GPAs 3.8 and higher. 3. Students must have completed 2 of 3 prerequisites at the time of application. (Prerequisites include: Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology 264 and 265.) 4. Prerequisites must be completed with a B or better. 5. Students may retake a course no more than one time. No more than three courses may be retaken. 6. Students will be admitted on their track. Note: A petition may be submitted for extenuating circumstances. Petitions will not guarantee waivers but the admissions council will review and consider the student s request. Students will receive notification of the decision of the council on the petition when Admission notifications are sent.

2 Admission Process Traditional Track Students are accepted into the Program following admission to Brigham Young University Idaho, review and approval by the Department of Admissions Council, and is based on GPA and evaluation of college courses and credits (Not to exceed 48 cumulative credits at the time of selection; Excluding concurrent (dual) enrollment credit earned while in high school). Students must complete Bio 264 by the time the selections committee meets for admissions. All pre-requisite courses must be completed with a grade of B or better by the time the student begins the program. Students not completing one year of Chemistry in high school with at least a B grade must complete the chemistry prerequisite. Prerequisite Courses Chem 101-Intro Gen Chem - 4 credits. (The student who has completed one full year of high school chemistry with a grade of B or better may qualify to have the chemistry prerequisite waived.) Bio 264 & Human Anatomy and Physiology - 8 credits. Prerequisites may be completed at Brigham Young University Idaho or other colleges/universities offering equivalent courses. If transferring credits, it is the student s responsibility to ensure the courses taken are equivalent and transferable. Please contact the Brigham Young University Idaho Student Records Office (208) to review the courses in question. Students must also meet University Residency Requirements. Admission Process Alternate Track Students with greater than 48 credits (excluding concurrent (dual) enrollment credit earned while in high school) will only be considered for the Alternate Track. Students are accepted into the Alternate Track of the program following admission to Brigham Young University Idaho, review and approval by the Department of Admissions Council, and is based on GPA and evaluation of college courses, credits and grades. Applicants for the Alternate Track must have all Foundations/GE, major required and prerequisite courses completed prior to beginning the nursing program. Chemistry, Anatomy & Physiology (Bio 264 and Bio 265) must be completed with a B grade or higher. classes are held during the day and clinicals are usually evenings and/or Saturdays. Call Continuing Education (208) or (208) for program costs and other information. Academically prepared students may be admitted on other criteria should vacancies occur following the initial admission process. Program Requirements After being accepted to Brigham Young University Idaho and prior to starting the Program the qualified candidate will: 1. Receive a confirmation letter from the Department of. 2. Return signed Acceptance Form by specified date. 3. Return completed Consent Form. 4. Provide documentation of American Heart Association Health Care Provider CPR certification valid through duration of the nursing program. 5. Submit completed health questionnaire with immunization documentation by specified date. 6. Assume the responsibility for and risks of transportation to and from clinical assignments. 7. Submit a copy of their completed criminal background check (see application packet for specific requirements). ASN Class Fees Kit: $ Lab Fee: $87.00 Syllabi: $45.00 NCLEX Review Fee: $ (divided among nursing courses) Each nursing student is required to have student malpractice liability insurance. The insurance fee is $10 per student per semester and is paid by Brigham Young University Idaho. ASN Transcultural Opportunities Transcultural experiences are offered each year and permit a select number of qualified students the opportunity to complete NUR 202, 203 and 205 in a foreign land. Details pertaining to specific experiences, including recommended course sequence and program costs, are available to students on request. This traditional event honors the academic completion of the Asociate Degree and RN to BSN nursing programs. 3 Baccalaureate of Science Degree in (RN-BSN) The Baccalaureate Completion Program at Brigham Young University Idaho is designed for the individual with a current license as a Registered Nurse, that desires to expand employment opportunities and enhance nursing knowledge. This program can be completed in three full-time semesters or six part-time semesters. Upon completion of the RN to BSN nursing curriculum, the graduate will utilize the nursing philosophy as a guide for holistic nursing care and be prepared to: Stewardship 1. Demonstrate accountability and independence for designing and administering nursing care. 2. Assume increasing responsibility for personal and professional stewardship goals. Knowledge 3. Administer, direct, manage and coordinate holistic nursing care for individuals, families and communities. 4. Apply knowledge and understanding of self and community by pursuing further education. 5. Utilize, conduct and evaluate nursing research. Professionalism 6. Be prepared to accept roles within professional nursing organizations. Critical Thinking 7. Apply knowledge and understanding of self by utilizing critical thinking. Caring 8. Recognize, initiate and develop caring attitudes and relationships. Process 9. Utilize the nursing process in providing nursing care through organizing and directing interdisciplinary groups within the Health Care Community. Application/Admissions Process Students are admitted to the BYU Idaho RN-BSN Program following admission to Brigham Young University Idaho and approval by the Department of Admissions Council. First priority is given to graduates of the Brigham Young University Idaho ASN program. All applicants must have a current RN license before the first day of each class. Current BYU Idaho students and BYU Idaho Alumni within oneyear of graduation: See ASN Student Handbook-BSN Bridge Alumni more than one-year after graduation: Follow the All Other Applicants guidelines. (see above for priority) All Other Applicants: Two separate applications are required. One to each of the following: 1. Brigham Young University Idaho (with ALL official college transcripts) 2. BYU Idaho Department of (with ALL official college transcripts attached) 3. The student must apply and be accepted as a non-traditional student to BYU Idaho. Applicants are evaluated on: Completeness of Application Work experience in nursing Meeting university GE/Foundations requirements GPA may be considered Additional Information The graduate of either a diploma or Associate degree program must complete the General Education/Foundations requirements of BYU 361 Idaho for a Bachelor of Science degree. If transferring credits, it is the student s responsibility to ensure the courses taken are equivalent and transferable. All transfer students must submit transcripts to the Student Records and Registration Office, (208) , for evaluation and validation of completion of BYU Idaho requirements. Students must also meet the University s Residency Requirement. Upon Admission After being accepted to the RN-BSN Program, the student must: 1. Receive a confirmation letter of acceptance from the Department of 2. Return signed Acceptance Form, by specified date 3. Complete University Residency requirements (see catalog) 4. Meet all requirements of clinical facilities (Note: Some facilities may require United States citizenship and a valid social security number) 5. Update CPR, immunization and licensure documentation and provide the department with current documents at all times. BSN Class Fees BSN: $52.00 BSN Program Tracks Students must select either the full time or the part time track and indicate the selection in the degree completion plan. For sequence of courses see Distance Education Courses The Brigham Young University Idaho RN-BSN Program is offered through distance education utilizing , Websites/I-Learn program and ground mail. The mode of instruction/communication is determined by the individual course instructor. Clinical experiences are to be completed within the area where the learner resides with instructor approval and completion of required documents. (See Website.) Required foundations courses may be taken on campus or on-line through Brigham Young University Idaho Continuing Education or at other colleges/universities. Acceptance of credits taken at other universities are contingent upon approval by the Student Records and Registration Office at Brigham Young University Idaho. Please contact the BYU Idaho Student Records and Regsitration Office (208) to review courses in question before enrolling. BSN Transcultural Opportunities Transcultural experiences may be offered to complete clinical hours for community and/or leadership courses. 5 Course Descriptions Credits* NURS 100 Introductory (ASN) (6.0:3:9) Fee: $ Prerequisite: Acceptance into the nursing program and completion of BIO 264/265; and Chem 101, 105, or one full year of High School Chemistry with a grade of B or better. This semester course provides the learner experience in utilizing the nursing process to provide fundamental care for patients in long-term and acute-care settings. NURS 100A Intro (ASN) (1.0:1:0) Fee: $10.00 Prerequisite: Acceptance into the Program and Concurrent enrollment in NURS 100. This semester course is an introduction of concepts related to nursing professionalism including: values, leadership, economics, ethics, teaching/learning, legal implications, cultural, and spiritual aspects. Communication and interpersonal skills will be emphasized. NURS 102 Beginning Med/Surg (ASN) (3.0:1.5:4.5) Fee: $60.00 Prerequisite: NURS 100 and NURS 100A This BLOCK course builds on the learner s base knowledge of the body s metabolism, incorporating the nursing process through the conceptual model in caring for individuals who have metabolic concerns through the wellness continuum. NURS 103 Specialty (2.0:1:3) Fee: $60.00 Prerequisite: NURS 100 and NURS 100A This semester course is designed to increase the student s self awareness and application of the nursing process, using the conceptual model as a guide, to the holistic concerns of themselves and others. The major psychiatric disorders, common psychiatric problems, and mental-health issues that people deal with over the life span are explored. NURS 104 Beginning Med/Surg (ASN) (3.0:1.5:4.5) Fee: $60.00 Preresquisite: NURS 100 and NURS 100A This BLOCK course applies the nursing process, using the conceptual model as a guide, in caring for individuals with problems of the digestive system and/or cellular concerns. NURS 202 Specialty (ASN) (3.0:1.5:4.5) This BLOCK course provides the student experience in hospital and community settings in order to apply the nursing process, using the conceptual model as a guide in caring for individuals through the wellness continuum as it applies to women s health issues, pregnancy, labor and delivery and the newborn period. NURS 203 Specialty (ASN) (3.0:1.5:4.5) This BLOCK course focuses on the application of the nursing process, using the conceptual model as a guide, in the specialized caring for the well infant, child and adolescent, the high-risk infant, and the ill child and adolescent in hospital and community settings. NURS 205 Trends and Professionalism in (ASN) (1.0:1:0) This semester course utilizes the conceptual model to help the student focus on entry into professional nursing practice, i.e., employment opportunities, health care trends, etc. NURS 206 Specialty (1.0:1:0) Fee: $55.00 This semester course uses the conceptual model to focus on professional accountability, legal issues, current trends, and educational opportunities for nurses. NURS 210 Intermediate Med/Surg (ASN) (3.0:1.5:4.5) This BLOCK course focuses on the application of the nursing process, using the conceptual model as a guide, in caring for individuals through the wellness continuum as it applies to complex patients having musculoskeletal, sensory, neurological and endocrine concerns. NURS 211 Intermediate Med/Surg (ASN) (3.0:1.5:4.5) This BLOCK course provides the learner knowledge and experience using the nursing process, with the conceptual model as a guide, in caring for individuals and families in preventative and rehabilitative care and in acute-care situations with complex patients having concerns in perfusion and oxygenation capabilities. NURS 290 Special Problems (ASN) ( :1-3:0) This elective semester course provides the opportunity for study of pertinent topics not included in the nursing curriculum. May be repeated for credit. NURS 299 Nurse Review Course (ASN) (3.0:2:3) This elective semester course provides a broad review of nursing practice and care of the medical-surgical, pediatric, psychiatric, and obstetrical clients. It is taught with lecture, discussion of texts, articles, computer simulations, presentations, and case histories. Emphasis is on student participation and active involvement with the learning process. NURS 316 Professional Seminar (BSN) (2.0:2:0) Fee: $7.00 Prerequisite: Registered Nurse Licensure This semester course applies the conceptual model to help the student explore differences in ASN and BSN education and practice levels, nursing theorists and professional responsibilities. Offered on campus or Distant Education. NURS 327 Physical Assessment (4.0:3:3) Fee: $25.00 This semester course uses the conceptual model to help the student gain advanced assessment skills to improve patient care. *Note: Escrow credit is a method of academic adjustment that allows a block of credit to be granted for previous learning. (See Vertical Credits in catalog). At BYU-Idaho, Escrow credit allows lower division credits already earned to be awarded as upper division credits upon successful completion of specifi ed course work. These credits are required for the BSN program. When the BSN student successfully completes NURS 327 and NURS 330, six vertical credits will be awarded. NURS 330 Advanced Med Surgery (5.0:3:6) This semester course offers the learner knowledge and experience applying the conceptual model in the education of and caring for the adult patient with specifi c attention to the wellness continuum as it relates to clinical changes in the critical care areas. *Note: Escrow credit is a method of academic adjustment that allows a block of credit to be granted for previous learning. (See Vertical Credits in catalog). At BYU-Idaho, escrow credit allows lower division credits already earned to be awarded as upper division credits upon successful completion of specifi ed course work. These credits are required for the BSN program. When the BSN student successfully completes 327 and 330, six vertical credits will be awarded. 6 NURS 331 Vertical Escrow Credits (BSN) (6.0:0:0) Vertical Escrow Credits After successful completion of 327 and 330, complete and submit a Vertical Escrow Credit Application Form. The form is submitted to the Student Records and Registration Offi ce. Six Escrow credits will be granted, listed as 331 on the transcript. The granting of vertical escrow credits documents previous learning. *Note: Escrow credit is a method of academic adjustment that allows a block of credit to be granted for previous learning. (See Vertical Credits in catalog). At BYU-Idaho, escrow credit allows lower division credits already earned to be awarded as upper division credits upon successful completion of specifi ed course work. NURS 338 Research (BSN) (3.0:3:0) Prerequisite: FDMath 108 or FDMAT 221 or FDMAT 222 or FDMAT 223 This semester course offers the learner knowledge and experience in using the conceptual model and the relationship of inquiry, including quantitative and qualitative processes, with the advancement and structuring of nursing knowledge. It provides a forum for discussion of the development, application and evaluation of various types of nursing research and allows the learner opportunity to examine research credibility and evidence based practice. Offered on-campus or Distance Education. NURS 449 Community (BSN) (5.0:2:9) Fee: $10 This survey course uses the conceptual model to help the student explore the nursing process in community health nursing practice for the purpose of preventing disease and disability, and promoting, protecting, and maintaining a healthy community. Offered on-campus or Distance Education. NURS 450 Leadership (BSN) (5.0:2:9) Fee: $10 This semester course utilizes the conceptual model to help the student explore the principles of leadership and management as they apply to nursing practice. Offered on campus or Distance Education. Theory Time: Theory time is calculated on a one credit hour/one theory hour ratio. Clinical Time Clinical time is calculated on a one credit hour/three clinical hour ratio Both Theory Time and Clinical time are based on a 16 week semester. Prenatal development. Impact of pregnancy and childbirth experiences on the couple relationship. BLOCK class. SFN 301 Family Skills - Adult (CLUSTER) (4.0:4:0) Fee: $40.00 CLUSTER COURSE FOR NON-NURSING MAJORS ONLY. This semester course is designed to help the Non- Major increase their knowledge of nursing concepts applicable to the development and changes which occur through life. In-class activities will provide basic nursing skills to assist the learner in family support through illness. Cluster courses for non-nursing majors ONLY. (Winter, Spring) SFN 302 Family Skills - Women s Health (CLUSTER) (4.0:4:0) CLUSTER COURSE FOR NON-NURSING MAJORS ONLY. This semester course is designed to help the Non- Major understand basic principles of women s health and care of pregnant women and roles. It also covers fundamental principles in caring for the expectant mother, the newborn infant, and women s health issues. Cluster courses for non-nursing majors ONLY. (Fall, Winter) SFN 303 Family Skills - Children (CLUSTER) (4.0:4:0) CLUSTER COURSE FOR NON-NURSING MAJORS ONLY. This semester course is designed to help the Non- Major understand illnesses and disabilities of infancy, childhood, and adolescence; and understand the application of fundamental principles in caring for ill children in the family setting, and in improving overall wellness of children.
