Survival Scenarios For Team Building Find tips and ideas for HR and managers at
Defy Death on a Desert Island On your way to a team retreat your plane was caught in an electrical storm and crash landed on a deserted island. Considering the items most likely to have been on the plane with you, as a team choose 12 items that you can use to survive.
Survival at Sea You and your team have chartered a yacht, however none of you have any previous sailing experience so you ve hired a skipper and a 2-person crew. As you sail through the Southern Pacific Ocean a fire breaks out and much of the yacht and its contents are destroyed. The yacht is slowly sinking. Your location is unclear because vital navigational and radio equipment has been damaged. The skipper and crew are dead. There is a rubber life raft that you can use but you must decide which of the 15 items you have been able to salvage will go with you. To do this, you must list the items in order of importance to your survival. A sextant Shaving mirror Mosquito netting 5 gallon can of water Case of army rations Map of the Pacific Ocean Floating seat cushion 2 gallon can of oil Transistor radio Plastic sheeting Shark repellent Bottle of rum Nylon rope 2 boxes of chocolate bars A fishing kit
Over the Moon for Teamwork The Situation You are a member of a lunar exploration crew originally scheduled to rendezvous with a mother ship on the lighted surface of the moon. Due to mechanical difficulties however, your ship was forced to land at a spot some 320 kilometers (200 miles) from the rendezvous point. During the re-entry and landing, much of the equipment aboard was damaged, and, since survival depends on reaching the mother ship, the most critical items available must be chosen for the 320 km trip. Your Task On the next page are listed the 15 items left intact and undamaged after landing. Your task is to rank these items according to their importance in aiding you to reach the mother ship, starting with "1" the more important, to "15" the least important. You should assume that your crew and you have agreed to stick together, and all 15 items are in good condition. Compass, magnetic First aid kit w/ hypodermic needles Flares, signal FM receiver/transmitter (solar-powered) Food concentrate Heating unit, portable Map (stellar map, moon s constellations) Matches (1 box Milk (1 case dehydrated milk) Oxygen (2 50kg tanks) Parachute silk Pistols (2.45 caliber) Raft, Life (automatic inflating) Rope, Nylon (20 meters) Water (25 liters)
It s Getting Hot Out Here It is 1:00 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon at the end of May. You and your teammates have just finished a two-day training in Casablanca, Morocco. You are all on board a chartered, twin-engine plane that is destined for Dakhla, Morocco, a small town on the coast of the North Atlantic Ocean, approximately 1000 miles from Casablanca. The first fifty minutes of the flight were fine. Around this time the pilot comes on the speaker to let you know that you are currently flying over the Sahara Desert and that weather reports showed a temperature high of 115 degrees. Approximately one hour and ten minutes into the flight, you hear a loud blast and the plane nosedives. Within minutes you realize that the cabin is losing pressure. When you look outside the windows, you notice that is desert below is growing larger as the plane rapidly descends toward the ground. You notice that the only things you can see out of your window are some large boulders and miles and miles of sand. Within minutes the planes crashes and smoke and flames fill the cabin. All surviving passengers and crew members scramble to exit the plane before it explodes. Seven minutes after the crash, the plane explodes in a fiery ball that reduces it to rubble. With the exception of the airplane s captain and one crewmember, you, your teammates, one flight crewmember, and the co-captain have all survived the crash. Now you must decide how to work together to survive the desert climate and terrain, get help, and hopefully make it out of the desert alive. On your way out of the plane, in the few minutes before it exploded, you and your teammates were able to salvage the items in the list below. It is May and you and your teammates are dressed in business casual for the hot summer months of Africa. With only the clothes on your back and the items pulled from the wreckage, how will you survive? Step 1. As a team rank the items below in order of importance, 1 being most important and 18 being least important. Step 2 As a team, come up with a plan for survival. Items: 1 Book of matches 3 Airplane blankets 20 Feet of nylon rope 1 Sewing kit 2 50 kg Tanks of oxygen 20 Cans of soda 1 Life raft 1 Bottle opener 1 Magnetic compass 1 Single-blade pocketknife 15 Gallons of water 3 Signal flares 1 First aid kit 1 Snakebite kit 25 Mini bags of pretzels 55 Mini bags of peanuts 1 Safety razor blade 4 Airplane pillows
