Crossovers GOALIES: can skate with all players. 2) Top Speed-Pivot Turns DRILL OBJECTIVE: Acceleration 7:10P - 7:20P(10) min Crossunders Keep feet moving Backward pivot turn Backward-Forward step out ORGANIZATION: Form 3 lines at the goal line. Players start skating forward and skate to the red line, they pivot backwards and skate towards the blueline using crossunders-step out forward at the blueline and accelerate using crossunders to the far blueline. Can start out backwards to forward and With or without pucks. GOALIES: Participate in drill 3) Sequence Drill Skating DRILL OBJECTIVE: Warm Up Fundamental Skill Drill 7:20P - 7:30P(10) min ORGANIZATION: Players on all four bluelines at the boards, Pucks in the center circle. opposite diagonal lines go at the same time, player skates to far blueline makes a tight turn back to near blueline, tight turn through center circle, pick up a puck and go in for a shot on goal. Each circle has a function. 1. Big circle will have reg. puck handling Control the puck 2. One circle will be backwards 3. One circle will be with toe of stick 4. One circle will be kicking puck in skates 5. One circle will be droping to one knee ***On Misha's whistle, players move to new circle to perform new skill as depicted GOALIES: Active
2 Page 2 of 6 6) Diminishing Pucks A DRILL OBJECTIVE: Tight area puck-handling 7:50P - 8:00P(10) min Puck position ORGANIZATION: Place every player with a puck in an area from the top of the circles down. On the whistle the players carry the puck as fast as they can in and out of each other,but within the Head up confined space alloted. The coaches knock the pucks off of the players sticks and out of the designated area. If the player loses Feet moving the puck outside the playing area, he/she must go steal another puck off of someone else. The Drill should last seconds and Protect puck then be repeated. Should be down to a few pucks at the end. Change the alloted playing area by closing in the space given to the players. GOALIES: Goalie work at other end. Can also let the goalies knock the puck off of the sticks 7) Passing and Receiving Stations DRILL OBJECTIVE: Passing and Receiving 8:00P - 8:30P(30) min 5-8 minutes at each station ORGANIZATION: #1- Rotational Passing: Position players as indicated-f1/f2/f3/f4; F4 passes to F3 and skates around the faceoff dot outside of blueline. F3 passes to F2-F2 passes to F1 who passes to F4 coming through the middle. F4 shoots and next Eye contact with passer player goes. Rotate passing positions. #2- Accuracy Passing: Move laterally giving and receiving passes Give Target on the outside of the cones. #3- "Monkey in the middle": 1 player in the middle of the circle with Deception players continuously passing the puck until it is intercepted. New player moves to middle. Use different types of passes GOALIES: In the net at station #1 8) Overspeed Give and Go DRILL OBJECTIVE: Have players elevate their 8:30P - 8:40P(10) min speed ORGANIZATION: Divide the players into two equal groups positioned at the faceoff circle with pucks, at the red line, facing in opposite directions. Coach positioned at the lower area of the Passing/Receiving faceoff circle. On the whistle the first two players in line skating with the puck out to the boards, down to the faceoff circle in the Shooting quick release endzone, making a tight turn, coming out of the turn, pass the puck to the coach and continue skating to the far side of the rink near Hockey endurance the red line to receive the pass back from the coach to finish with a quick shot on goal. Receiving passes on the backhand is a Creative decision making at high speeds difficult skill that needs to be practiced over and over for many years. Encourage quick release getting the shot on net This drill should be done in both directions. GOALIES: follow player thru center ice, Angle awareness. 9) 3 Player Touch Pass DRILL OBJECTIVE: Skating & Passing / Receiving 8:40P - 8:50P(10) min Puck control ORGANIZATION: Players work in groups of 3 and skate around the outside of the rink.the players pass the puck between them without losing possession. The lead player skates backwards while Quick hands the other 2 players skate forward. Players utilize all types of passes. Eyes up Multiple pucks GOALIES: Coach working with goalies Hands in front of body Stick on ice for receiving pass 10) Shooting Stations DRILL OBJECTIVE: Shooting 8:50P - 9:20P(30) min Eye Contact with Target Follow through to target Transfer weight from back to front Quick release ORGANIZATION: #1- F1 passes to F2-F2passes to F3; F1 skates outside the blueline, receives return pass from F3 and shoots on goal. #2- Stationary shooting against boards #3- F2 are right hand shots/f1 are left hand shots; F2 passes behind the net to F1; F1 walks out around the pylon and takes a backhand shot. Work on different shots and shooting situations GOALIES: In the net at each end
3 Page 3 of 6 11) 2 on 0 Competition 2 DRILL OBJECTIVE: 2 on 0 Relay Races, Score 9:20P - 9:30P(10) min Passing/ Receiving ORGANIZATION: Nets are positioned in the middle of the ice at each blueline. The players are divided into two equal groups. The groups are positioned on opposite diagonal bluelines. On the 2 on 0 offensive concepts whistle, the first two players from each side start with one puck and pass the puck 2 on 0, and score on the net on the opposite Attack rebounds blueline. Play the 2 on 0 until a goal is scored. After the goal is scored, both players race back to their blueline, once both players Competitive Fun Drill cross the blueline, the next two players begin the same sequence for this relay race. Two groups of players on the blueline facing the end zone, just inside the faceoff dots. The other two groups are positioned at the red Angle Defensive Side line on the edge of the faceoff circle. Pucks are placed on top of the circle in the end zone. On the whistle, the first player in each of Body contact the four lines start at the same time. The players on the blueline swing in to retrieve the puck that is placed at the top of the circle. On the whistle both ends start at the same time, the defenseman starts the drill with a pass Defensive Positioning to the forward, skates around the near faceoff circle, always facing up ice, skates out of the circle to the redline in the neutral zone to Quick feet Explosiveness take the forward 1 on 1. The forward sprints with the puck up towards the cone placed at the top of the faceoff circle at the other Transition skating end. Makes a turn towards the boards and attacks the defense 1 on 1. Puckhandling Switch sides, can also vary the point of turn/attack in the neutral zone and also vary the direction of the turn of the forward. GOALIES: Game like situation, play the 1 on 1 situation, Fight through screen, Rebound control. 14) 2 on 2 Game DRILL OBJECTIVE: Offensive creativity, 3 on 2 9:50P - 10:00P(10) min Puckhandling ORGANIZATION: Two nets positioned at the goal line in each corner of one zone. Players divided into two equal groups, positioned at the blueline with the Coach in the middle of the ice at Passing/ Receiving the blueline with pucks. One support player per team is positioned on the top of the faceoff circle on their side of the ice. Two players Proper Receiving Angle for each team start inside the zone, the Coach starts the drill by dumping the puck in off the end boards. The team that gains Create scoring chances control of the puck and passes to their support player who then activates and becomes part of the game tries to score on the Creativity opposite net a 3 on 2 situation. Once the opposing team gains possession of the puck the support player drops out, and skates to the top of the circle from where he started. Now the team that gained control of the puck has to pass to their support player to activate him into the game to create a 3 on 2 situation at the other end. GOALIES: Read rush, game like situation, puck carrier has several options and is under pressure.
4 Page 4 of 6 15) Mid Zone Game DRILL OBJECTIVE: Create Good Scoring Chances 10:00P - 10:10P(10) min Passing/Receiving Defensive Positioning Transition Puck support Creating space for your teammate ORGANIZATION: Mid-ice drill; two nets positioned at each blueline - Players are divided into two equal teams. Three players from each team start the drill 3 on 3. Coaches positioned as shown in the diagram. 3 on 3 game; the coaches are stationary but can be used by the team that has puck possession. The Coach can speed the game up by using one touch passes. 2 passes have to be made before passing to the Coach. GOALIES: Read the rush, game like situation, puck carrier has several options and is under pressure 16) 3 on 3 Defensive Zone Coverage DRILL OBJECTIVE: Proper Positioning, Defensive 10:10P - 10:20P(10) min Defensive awareness ORGANIZATION: Divide players equally into two groups along the blueline. Two defenseman and one forward defend against three forwards below the tops of the circles. If the puck comes out of the Battling 1 on 1 zone or a goal is scored quickly, the coach can add another puck. Shifts should last 30 seconds. Net Front Coverage GOALIES: Game like situation, communicate with your Create scoring chances defenseman, read and react to all situations. Communication 17) Backcheck, 2 on 2 DRILL OBJECTIVE: Defensive Awareness, 10:20P - 10:30P(10) min ORGANIZATION: Two lines of players at the red line facing the same direction, pucks at one of the lines and also at the opposite blueline with the coach. the first two players in each line start by Defensive Positioning passing the puck two on 0 down the ice toward the goal for a shot on net, both players turn to the boards skating down to the other Compete, Battle 2 on 2 end. the next two players in line follow the first two players to just inside the blue line then pick up the first players on a backcheck Speed, Angling down the ice. as the first two players enter the zone the coach throws the puck into one of the corners for the first two players to Protecting the puck retrieve the puck and and try to score vs the two backchecking players two on two in the zone If a goal is scored quickley the coach can add a second puck GOALIES: 2 on 0 at one end and game like situation 2 on 2 at the other end. Switch goalies half way through the drill. 18) 3 on 2 Small Game DRILL OBJECTIVE: Create Good Scoring Chances, 10:30P - 10:40P(10) min Transition Create odd man rushes/scoring chances Creativity Defensive Positioning Competitive ORGANIZATION: Position both nets in the end zone along the boards, dividing the ice into half with an imaginary line or with paint on the ice. 3 players on each team. A puck is dumped in by the coach, the team that gains possession goes on the offense. One of the defending players cannot cross mid-ice, however, on the change of possession his teammates can use him for a transition break toward the other net. While the opposite team must keep on defender on the other side of mid-ice. This drill can also be a 2 on 2 to create 2 on 1's one player has to stay on his half of the ice. GOALIES: Read the rush, low net coverage, transition the puck, rebound control, Game like situation 19) Give and Go Shooting DRILL OBJECTIVE: Adjust lateral angle from high 10:40P - 10:50P(10) min Goalie positioning Goalie skating Shooting on the move Push with opposite leg Keeping your head up while shooting ORGANIZATION: Divide players into two equal groups. One group at the top of each faceoff circle in the zone with pucks. One player starts on one side at the goal line, below the faceoff circle facing one line of players. The player facing the single player at the goal line starts the drill with a direct pass to that player, skating down to the faceoff circle to the hashmarks and stop, receive the pass back, skate up around the top of the circle for a shot on goal, continue down to the goal line below the faceoff circle facing the opposite line and receive a pass from that line to continue the drill. A continious drill. GOALIES: follow shooter across zone, get a feel for the puck and your positioning on off angle shots.
5 Page 5 of 6 20) Five Puck Goalie Skate DRILL OBJECTIVE: Control skating in the crease, 10:50P - 11:00P(10) min Shuffle skate ORGANIZATION: Place five pucks in an arc just outside the crease. Goalie skates in the arc stopping and centering on each puck, using a controlled shuffle skate, for about 20 seconds. On T-glide coaches whistle the goalie now skates from one puck to the other, using a t-glide. The coach decides which puck the goalie moves to Body control always changing the goalies course, always stopping to be centered and square on the puck. Transition skating At the end of 20 seconds the goalie starts at one post and comes out to poke check the pucks one at a time returning to the post each time until all but one puck remains on the final puck the goalie must cover the puck for whistle. GOALIES: See organization of the drill. 21) Skate the Cross DRILL OBJECTIVE: Improve goalie specific skating 11:00P - 11:10P(10) min Improve Skating techniques Develop shuffle movement Build endurance work on recovering to ready position ORGANIZATION: Goalie starts at the bottom of the face-off circle. In the goalie position skates to the face-off dot, drops to knees recovers back up. Shuffles right to the edge of the circle and back to the dot and drops to the knees and recovers back up. Skate to the top of the circle using C-cuts and backwards to the dot again dropping to the knees and recovers back up. Then shuffling to the left edge of the face-off circle and back to the dot drops to the knees and recovers back up. Skate backward to the bottom of the circle to complete the drill. Use the T-glide Technique instead of shuffles. Do half butterfly, full butterfly or stack the pad saves at the dot instead of dropping to knees. GOALIES: 22) 3 on 3 behind the net DRILL OBJECTIVE: Offensive and Defensive play 11:10P - 11:20P(10) min Create Scoring Chances in small area Puck Support Quick Transition Offensive/defensive awareness of the game Get the puck up high in tight ORGANIZATION: In one end zone place the two nets in the middle of the ice, back-to-back, facing out towards the boards. 3 on 3 game; when one group of players have control of the puck they are trying to create scoring chances on their designated goal. The other 3 players are now in a defensive situation where they try to prevent that team from scoring. On a turnover the defensive team now become the offensive team, trying to score on their designated net. A 2 pass senario can be added on the change of possession, before shooting. GOALIES: Post to post play, head on a swivel, keep an active stick to deny the passing angles thru the crease. 23) 3 on 3 X's vs O's DRILL OBJECTIVE: Small area games to create 11:20P - 11:30P(10) min ORGANIZATION: Players divided into 2 teams. Positioned outside the blueline. Start with 3 players from each team in the zone with 2 nets positioned at the side boards. The coach Passing/ Receiving standing just outside the blueline has pucks and street hockey balls. If the coach throws in a puck the players play a regular 3 on Communication 3 game. If the coach throws in a ball the teams can score on either goal. Protecting the puck GOALIES: Develop awareness to various situations. Quickness, Create scoring chances agility, balance. Quick reaction to alot of shots. 24) 3 Group 1 on 1 DRILL OBJECTIVE: Create scoring chances 1 on 1 11:30P - 11:40P(10) min ORGANIZATION: 3 pairs of players play 1 on 1 in the end zone with two nets positioned at the side boards. 3, 1 on 1 games at the same time if a goal is scored, two new players join in to continue Puckhandling/Protection the drill. Body Positioning GOALIES: Develop awareness to various situations. Quickness, agility, balance. Quick reaction to alot of shots. Compete Proper angling
