3 Program Overview Mission Statement The mission of the Troy University program is to prepare rehabilitation counselors to provide rehabilitation services designed to assist individuals with disabilities to achieve their maximum potential. In addition, services will be provided to rehabilitation agencies and programs, and research related to rehabilitation will be pursued. The Troy University program leads to a Master of Science degree with a specialty in. Students may choose an emphasis area in either hearing or visual impairment. Upon graduation, students will have the basic foundational knowledge, skill and experiences necessary to enter the profession of rehabilitation counseling and practice as rehabilitation counselors.
4 Program Objectives Objectives for To prepare master s-level rehabilitation counselors who understand and follow the Code of Professional Ethics for Rehabilitation Counselors; know the laws that affect individuals with disabilities and are able to advocate for the rights of those individuals; understand the concept of choice, self-advocacy and self-determination, and promote these concepts throughout the rehabilitation process; value the worth and dignity of all individuals and view individuals with disabilities as equal partners in the rehabilitation process; demonstrate the ability to practice counseling techniques, job placement skills, and career strategies that will assist individuals with disabilities to develop the skills and competencies they need to function effectively in society; and know the technology and accommodations that are available to provide individuals with disabilities access to work, leisure, and school activities.
5 Curriculum Committee The purpose of the curriculum committee is to participate in discussions of all curriculum issues involved in core and specialty courses, determine (vote on) these issues, assess and evaluate program progress, implement curriculum changes to insure compliance with and maintain SACS, CACREP (Clinical Mental Health, Community Counseling, School Counseling ), CORE (), NCATE & Florida, Georgia, and Alabama Department of Education (School Counseling, School Psychology, School Psychometry) Accreditation, and manage non-accredited programs (Substance Abuse, Corrections Counseling).
6 Curriculum Committee Activity This body met face to face at least twice a year during the 07-08, and academic years (See minutes/notes) and via phone, and videoconferencing between face-to-face meetings (See s). Working with the College of Education Dean, Dr. Lance Tatum, and Associate Deans Dr. Robin Bynum, Dr. Pam Arrington, and Dr. Dianne Gossett, we have successfully earned system wide NCATE accreditation, system wide CORE accreditation and site specific CACREP accreditation at the Southeast Region Sites (Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Panama City, Ft. Walton Beach, Orlando, Pensacola, and Tampa, FL locations) and Dothan (Community and School Counseling) while maintaining CACREP site specific accreditation at Montgomery (School, Community), Troy (School, Community) and Phenix City (School, Community, and Clinical Mental Health).

EO #4A and 4B: Students will be able to create a competent research proposal (introduction, literature review, and methodology outline) written in accordance with the latest APA publication standards, and will be able to pass the Research Section of the National Counseling Professional Comprehensive Exam (CPCE). 11 Program Overview During the academic year, 47 students were enrolled in the programs. Of these students, 6 graduated with a Masters of Science degree. Dothan: 5 students; 0 graduated Montgomery: 10 students; 1 graduated Phenix City: 16 students; 3 graduated Troy: 16 students; 2 graduated

15 Expected Outcomes and Results Expected Outcome 1: Students will meet program objectives related to obtaining basic foundational knowledge and skill experience to enter the profession of rehabilitation counseling. 100% of students will be given a mid-program evaluation to continue in the program. 80% of students will make a minimum of 60% on the CPCE. In academic year , 84% (N=11) students passed the CPCE exam on the first try (making a minimum of 60%). One student retook the exam and passed on the second attempt. In academic year % (N=18) students passed the CPCE exam on the first attempt (making a minimum of 60%). Three students passed on the second attempt. One student failed the second and third attempt. In academic years and , 100% of students were given midpoint/annual reviews. CPCE = Counseling Professional Comprehensive Exam

23 Plans for Further Improvement Plans based on curriculum faculty observations The program will evaluate effectiveness of the program to determine that students have completed a balanced curriculum of knowledge and skills consistent with the requirements of CORE. Plans based on student learning outcome data Review of the assessment data shows that student performance on the research section of the CPCE does not meet the stated expected outcome. (EO 4A and EO 4B) During Spring and Summer (2010) the Counseling Curriculum Committee will meet to develop specific plans for improvement. Plans for further improvement will include additional research oriented assignments in core courses, development of an electronic research teaching session for students to review prior to students taking the CPCE (posted on the Counseling LiveText site), and other plans for improvement developed by faculty.
