1 Kindergarten-2nd January 17-18, 2015 Luke 10:25-37; 1 John 4:9 Adv. Bible for Early Readers (pp , 1455) Connect Time (15 minutes): Five minutes after the service begins, split kids into groups and begin their activity. Large Group (30 minutes): Begin 20 minutes after the service starts. Model what it looks like to be engaged in large group. The Good Samaritan Love Your Neighbor As you talk to kids about neighbors, feel free to ask them about the people they interact with on a regular basis near their home, near their school or wherever! Small Group (15 minutes): Keep kids in small groups until parents arrive. If you all have extra time at the end, you can review the video and songs together. As kids leave, encourage them to show their parents the paper with a Band-Aid on it and what s happening in the drawing! Jesus told a parable about a good Samaritan who helped a Jewish man who had been beaten up and left to die even though Samaritans and Jews were enemies. The story reminds us that Jesus wants us to love everyone and help anyone who needs it.

2 GOAL: Connect Time is all about engaging kids in an activity that allows them to connect with each other right away while simultaneously piquing their curiosity for Large Group and preparing their minds for what they re going to hear. BAND-AID RELAY Divide the room into teams (or each small group can be a team). Choose a starting line. Place the boxes/bags of Band-Aids across the room Each team will take turns sending players one at a time to run to the Band-Aids, grab and unwrap and place it on the back of their hand or around a finger. Then run back to the team for the next player to do the same! Then debrief: o If you were really hurt, would you want to put on a Band-Aid? Why? When all kids have arrived, stop and ask them to share the best and worst parts of their week. Before you head into Large Group, remind them of your expectations for behavior: (1) be kind, (2) listen when somebody speaks, and (3) follow the leader s instructions.

3 Goal: Kids will (1) retell the story of the good Samaritan, (2) understand that Jesus calls us to love others and (3) identify one way they want to love a neighbor this week. Why? Kids will be more likely to actually love a neighbor if they visualize themselves doing it through their drawing activity. Tip: If kids can t think of a person or didn t feel like God showed them one in small group, encourage them to choose anybody with whom they regularly interact. REVIEW THE STORY 1. What was it like between Israelites and Samaritans? 2. What happened to an Israelite guy traveling down the road? 3. Who were the three people who saw him? 4. Who helped? Why was that surprising? 5. What does this story teach us? APPLICATION ACTIVITY *Give each group a large, tear-off sheet of paper. Write/draw the names of your neighbors on the paper, as many as you can think of! Share the person God brought to your mind during Large Group. Circle it if it s on the paper; add it (then circle it) if it s not. Give each kid a blank sheet of paper. Have them draw a picture of them loving the person. Then give kids a Band-Aid to stick on their drawing to remind them to love that person as they would love themselves. *Pray, asking God to give kids strength to love others as themselves this week! Give each kid a coloring page. They can color it and write names of their neighbors inside the heart. Still have extra time? Have another relay, like Connect Time. Only this time, have one kid run to the end and sit down and he/she can t turn around and come back until a teammate runs down, helps him/her up and they run back together. (No more Band-Aids, please. We ve got to save them for other kids in other services!)

During Connect Time, you guys ALL got Band-Aids, didn t you? Now, I m glad that none of you were REALLY hurt but if you were raise your hand if you d want a Band-Aid. (Let kids respond.) Me too! Why would you guys want a Band-Aid if you were hurt? (Let 2-4 kids respond.) LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF Yep, when we get hurt we take care of ourselves right? That s because we actually all love ourselves. Even if we don t feel like it, we love to do what we want and get what we want, don t we? In fact, when Jesus tells us to love other people in Matthew 22:37-39, he says this: SLIDE: Matthew 22:37-39 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Love him with all your mind. This is the first and most important commandment. And the second is like it. Love your neighbor as you love yourself. So who does Jesus say to love? (Let kids say: your neighbor.) And how does Jesus say to love them? (Let kids say: like ourselves!) Yes! And that means taking care of our neighbors and doing anything for them that we would do for ourselves. Now, before we go any further, we need to figure out who are our neighbors? Let s play a game called Neighbors or Not. I m going to show you five pictures. If the people on screen are neighbors, yell neighbors. If they are not, yell not and put your hands in a big X. Let s practice: Neighbors! (Model and let kids respond.) Not! (Model and let kids respond.) Great job! Here we go: (Show the following five pictures. Let kids respond but don t tell kids if they are actually neighbors or not!)

Guess what? You guys are right! That s because our neighbors are ANYONE we see. In fact, Jesus even considers our enemies to be our neighbors. THE GOOD SAMARITAN Uh, that sounds crazy, right? Even bullies or people who we see one time at an airport or bus stop or people we don t really like are our neighbors? And we have to love them? Well, Jesus told a story to help us understand this. God s family was also called the Israelites, because they were from Israel. And another group of people were called the Samaritans, because they were from Samaria. And they were rivals, or enemies. They would try to do anything to avoid each other. But one day, a man from Israel was traveling and he got robbed and beat up. He was left lying by the side of the road. Three people passed him. One was his enemy, the Samaritan. Let s watch a little video to see what happened. See if you can figure out who helped the guy who was beat up and who didn t. Video: The Good Samaritan (Lego version) Wow, crazy story! So first, who did NOT help? (Let kids say: a priest and a temple assistant.) That s right, two men who actually worked with churches. But going to church doesn t make you like Jesus. Loving your neighbor does! And who DID help? Yep, the Samaritan the one who was supposed to be an enemy! IMAGINE THAT! For a moment, think in your head of one person who is hard for you to get along with, or maybe even hard for you to like. (Let kids close eyes.) Maybe this person is mean to you. Maybe they just like things that you don t like. Maybe they re just a bully in general! Think in your head for a second. Now close your eyes. Imagine YOU just got robbed and beat up, like the Lego guy in the video. You are lying on the ground and you can t move. You re in pain. (Click to play sound effect of a groan.) (Begin to walk out in the group if you can.) You see a person coming toward you and oh! It s a leader from another room in Kids Club! They ve never met you but you hope they re nice.(keep walking around). But nope, they pass you right by! (Click to play sad sound effect.)

7 A little while later, somebody else comes. This person is the parent of somebody at your school. They have kids themselves, so you hope they ll help (keep walking). Nope, they keep walking. (Click to play sad sound effect again.) Suddenly, the person you thought of in your head, the mean one, comes walking (play the suspenseful sound effect). If the Kids Club lead didn t help you and the parent of the kids at school didn t help you then this person DEFINITELY won t help you. You give up hope. But then, the enemy stops, leans down and has compassion on you! Which means they care for you. They carry you to get help, pay their own money to get you what you need and make sure you re safe before they leave you! You re going to be OK! You feel like this: (click to play kids cheering). Open your eyes! What would it feel like to have nice people pass you by and somebody you don t even like help you? (Let kids share.) That s right. Jesus said that the Samaritan or the one who helped was obeying God. He was the one who loved his neighbor and took care of him, just like he would have taken care of himself. And you know what s even harder? Imagine YOU are walking toward somebody on the ground and it s your enemy. Would you stop to help? Would you take care of them as much as you would take care of yourself? LET S ASK SHRIMPITA You know what, we ve heard this story the way Jesus told it when we watched our Lego video. We imagined how it would be for us today. But let s ask Shrimpita what this story means for us today. Ready? Video: Ask Shrimpita / Good Samaritan Wow, so what does this story mean for us? (Let kids respond.) Yes, Jesus wants us to love OUR neighbors which means everyone. (Click to show Super Bowl graphic) One way we can love others is by inviting them to know Jesus. In two weeks, Crossroads has its annual SUPER BOWL SERVICE. Consider inviting somebody who doesn t know Jesus to come with you. It s gonna be a lot of fun! PRAY Let s talk to God about this for minute. Everybody close your eyes. (Ask the kids to spend a minute talking to God in silence. Encourage them to ask them to show them ONE person, one neighbor, that he wants them to love this week. After about a minute of silence, wrap up by asking God to help us love our neighbors this week.)

8 For the next few weeks, we re going to learn a new verse. It s in I John 4:9 and it says this: SLIDE: I John 4:19 We love because he first loved us. Jesus commanded us to love our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:39). So a religious leader asked Jesus, Who is my neighbor? Then Jesus told the parable of the Good Samaritan, in which the unlikeliest person showed love and compassion. The story teaches us that Jesus wants us to love everyone, even people we don t know or would prefer to avoid. Ask your kid about it. And if you want, read the story together in Luke 10:25-37.
