1 Implementing for Success

2 TTM Training Teachers will: 1. Understand how TTM incorporates motivation, adaptivity, support, and reporting tools to support student learning. 2. Understand the placement and benchmark tests and how TTM uses a Quantile score to evaluate students math readiness. 3. Experience the functionality of TTM at the student level. 4. Explore the teacher tools and review how to enroll students. 5. Understand the importance of a strong TTM launch. 6. Understand the importance of teacher and school level motivation and discuss ideas for school based motivation. 7. Understand the importance of students using a TTM journal and learn how to incorporate this journal into the TTM implementation. 8. Explore the Overview and Student Progress report types. 9. Know how to get help and additional training.

3 Exploring Your Teacher Dashboard Complete each task below and check it off the list to become familiar with your TTM teacher dashboard. Sign into your TTM account at lms.thinkthroughmath.com. Username: Password: Click on the CLASSES tab. Click on Create a Class. Name your class TTM Test and click Save. Click on Add Students. Add a student named Think Thinkerton (any grade) and click Add Student. Hover over the MOTIVATION tab and click Contests Read about our upcoming or current contests Click on the HELP tab. Click on Live Support Chat. Close the chat window. Find Launching TTM with Students and click on Show Resources. Open the Student Launch Guide then close it. Click on the REPORTS tab. Find the Weekly Reports area and click Change Settings. Change the report opt-in indicator to YES.

4 Exploring Your Teacher Dashboard Hover over CONTENT tab. Click on Preview an Activity. Select a unit, lesson, and guided learning activity from the drop-down menus and click Preview. Click the arrow next to your name in the upper right-hand corner and select Done with Previewing an Activity. Hover over the CONTENT tab and click View Answer Key. Type in 4092 and click Lookup Item. Review the answer key and then click on Done with Answer Key. Click on the CLASSES tab. Click Start Cards. Click Deactivate next to the class you created earlier. Click on the HOME tab.

5 Exploring Motivation Ideas Our mission at Think Through Math is to motivate students to do more math. The more students engage with TTM, the more they will learn and improve. Teachers play an important role in motivating students. This activity will help you explore motivational resources and prepare for an exciting math experience for your students! Motivation Activity: Review at least one of the sites listed below. Brainstorm what types of motivation you could use in your classroom or on your campus. 6 On the Road to Are your students progressing toward our Think 30 goal? Do they need some motivation to help them reach this goal? Start a Think 30 Club at your school to incentivize students as they pass important benchmarks on the way to Think 30!* Getting Started: Put up a bulletin board in the hallway. As students pass 10 lessons, they get to add their names to the 10 column. As they reach each new goal, they can move their names to the 20 column and eventually the 30 column. Read the names of students who reach 30 passed lessons on your morning announcements each week. Benchmark Incentives: As students move through each benchmark, reward them with a small prize to keep them excited and motivated! The following is a list of ideas to get you thinking about prizes you can reasonably offer at your school. Prizes don t need to cost money and can be anything to get students excited. Get creative! The sky is the limit! 10 Lessons Passed 20 Lessons Passed 30 Lessons Passed Small piece of candy Pencil Certificate Homework pass TTM wristband Certificate Extra recess/early lunch Priority seating at lunch Free treat coupons donated by local restaurants or stores Think 30 Certificate T-shirt Lunch with the principal Donuts with principal Name on Hall of Fame wall Recognition at morning meeting and/or assembly Wear a hat for a week Watch a movie with the principal

7 On the Road to Club Day: Set up an actual Think 30 Club at your school. Find a teacher to sponsor the club weekly in the computer lab. Students can stay after school to work on Think Through Math with their friends and enjoy the benefit of positive peer influence in meeting and exceeding their goals! Plan a monthly event to recognize student achievement. TTM s National Think 30 Club: THINK Nation students are invited to join the elite THINK 30 Club! They will automatically become a THINK 30 Club member when they PASS 30 math lessons any point during the school year. Members will receive a THINK 30 Club badge commemorating this accomplishment into the most exclusive club at TTM. Being a THINK 30 Club member has its benefits! This year s March Math Madness (MX3) contest will be determined by how many students in your school are a part of the THINK 30 Club and invitations to the dance will be reserved for those schools that hit the mark. Every time you pass a math lesson, you get one step closer to being a nationwide THINK 30 Club member and taking your school to the biggest contest of the school year!

8 Journaling Action Plan The NCTM's Curriculum and Evaluation Standards states "The assessment of students' ability to communicate mathematics should provide evidence that they can express mathematical ideas by speaking, writing, demonstrating and depicting them visually." (1989, 214) Having students use the TTM Math Journal along with the computer is very important to the success of the TTM program in your classroom. The following action planning activity will help you design your journaling expectations. For journaling help and resources, please visit the Help tab. (Help > Resources > Math Resources) 1. What type of journal do you plan to use? (Check one) Store bought: Spiral notebook or journal Self-made: Colored paper with stapled lined paper inside 2. How often will students be using TTM? 3. Which TTM activities will students journal? (Circle all that apply) Pre-Quiz Guided Learning Practice Post-Quiz 4. How often will you collect journals? 5. How will you grade the journals? 9 Student Launch Plan Getting students off to the right start is crucial to your TTM program s success! The following action planning activity will help you prepare for a launch event that will have your students excited to do math! For student launch help and resources, please visit the Help tab. 10 Analyzing TTM Reports Break-Out Activity 1: Analyzing an Overview Report Study the sample Overview Report with a partner. Answer the following questions. 1. How many times has Captain America accessed Live Help? 2. What is George of the Jungle's on-grade level pass rate? 3. Name a student that scored above grade level on the Placement Test. 4. What piece of advice might you give Ronald McDonald so he can get more out of his TTM experience? 5. Identify a student that is high performing. How can you tell? 6. Identify a student that is probably guessing. How can you tell? What piece of advice could you offer this student in order to improve his/her pass rate? Break-Out Activity 2: Analyzing a Student Progress Report Study the sample Student Progress Report with a partner and answer the following questions: 1. Name a lesson that George of the Jungle tested out of by passing the pre-quiz. 2. What happened when George failed Operations with Fractions-Mixed Practice - a sixth grade lesson? 3. George failed a fifth grade lesson. Name the 4 th grade lesson he was given for remediation. 4. How long did George spend on the lesson Identifying Ratios? 5. What date and time did George complete the lessons Concept of Ratios and Rates?

11 Recommendations for Progress Monitoring Plan Using the Overview and Student Progress Reports For progress monitoring help and resources, please visit the Help tab. (Help > Resources > Reporting Guide) Overview Report Plan We recommend you pull the Overview Report weekly (if your students use TTM once or twice a week) and every other day (if your students use TTM daily). You will use this report to analyze which students need your help. This report will allow you to quickly identify who needs your help in using the TTM system effectively. o Guessers o Struggling users o Students who aren t utilizing Live Help o Students that are passing lessons and experiencing success Student Progress Report Plan We recommend you run the Student Progress Report for a small group of students daily on a rotation basis so that by the end of each week you will have met individually with each student. o Group the students into five groups and assign them M/T/W/Th/F o On Monday, go to your teacher page and pull up the Progress Report for the first student on Monday s list. o Student will meet with you at your desk with his/her TTM journal for a brief 2-5 minute chat o Reward students for passed lessons o Review with student any post quiz that was failed. Use the journal to see why the student failed post quiz o Use this time to take notes so you can easily group students together who are failing the same concepts. (Repeat for all students on Monday s list and then repeat entire process on subsequent days of the week with the appropriate group of students)
