2 Air Pollution: A Growing Source of Early Death 2 The 2010 GBD places outdoor air pollution among the top 10 risks worldwide. The study finds that, annually, outdoor fine particle pollution contributes to over 3.2 million premature deaths worldwide and over 74 million years of healthy life lost. It also shows that household air pollution from the burning of solid fuels is responsible for a substantial burden of disease in low- and middle- income countries. 5 The Clean Power Plan 5 Reduces carbon pollution by 32% by 2030 Health and climate benefits between $34 billion to $54 billion in 2030 States develop plans and can use either rate-based and mass-based goals and then submit plans to EPA for approval EPA encourages states to conduct analyses to help states, communities and utilities understand the potential localized and community impacts of state plans.

6 Phase 2 Heavy Duty Diesel GHG Standards 6 This month, U.S. EPA and the Department of Transportation s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration jointly finalized GHG standards for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles The final standards are expected to lower CO 2 emissions by approximately 1.1 billion metric tons, save vehicle owners fuel costs of about US$170 billion, and reduce oil consumption by up to 2 billion barrels over the lifetime of the vehicles sold Will result in up to $230 billion in net benefits to society over the lifetime of vehicles sold under the program, including: Fuel savings, carbon reductions, health benefits, energy security benefits, along with travel benefits, and refueling benefits. The standards provide multiple technological pathways to compliance and were informed by a comprehensive assessment of advanced technologies and extensive outreach to stakeholders

10 National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for Ozone 10 The updated health standard of 70 ppb will significantly reduce ozone air pollution and will provide an adequate margin of safety to protect at-risk groups The standard is especially important for children and people with asthma, who are at increased risk from ozone exposure, and will prevent hundreds of thousands of asthma attacks. Public health benefits of the updated standards are significant estimated at $2.9 to 5.9 billion annually in 2025 and outweighing estimated costs of $1.4 billion. EPA projections show the vast majority of U.S. counties will meet the standards by 2025 with federal and state rules and programs now in place or underway. Implementation of the ozone NAAQS has brought the national average ozone levels down 33% since 1980 and more than 90% of areas originally designated nonattainment for the 1997 ozone standards now meet those standards.
