Surface water is drawn upward by the sun, forming clouds, nearly pure and soft as it starts to fall. As it passes through the atmosphere it begins to collect impurities from smog and dust. As it seeps through soil and rocks it gathers hardness, rust, acid, unpleasant tastes odours. Water hardness is caused primarily by limestone dissolved from the earth by rainwater. Before softening technology people who wanted soft water collected rainwater from roofs in rain barrels and cisterns before it picked up impurities from the earth. The Water2buy process: today, research and technology have combined to produce an appliance that removes hardness (dissolved rock) using ion-exchange resins which have a superior ability to attract and capture the dissolved impurities in the water causing the hardness. Your Aquasmart water softener directs the flow of your household water through a bed of Aquasmart resin. The beads of resin remove the hardness impurities from the water and hold them. When they can hold no more, they must be recharged. First, the automatic recharge system temporarily switches to hard water supply to your household, bypassing your water softener. Next, the filtered sediment is flushed to the drain. Then, the Aquasmart resin is automatically bathed by a salt solution (brine), removing hardness impurities. Finally it is rinsed free of any excess brine. The water softener is again ready to soften more water for you. Under normal conditions, this cycle can be repeated indefinitely as the Aquasmart resin lasts for years and years. Page 1

SAFETY GUIDES Read all steps, guides and rules carefully before installing and using your water softener. Follow all steps exactly to correctly install. Reading this manual will help you get all the benefits from your Aquasmart water softener. We recommend that a trained professional install this water softener. Please follow all local codes for plumbing this unit. Follow local electrical codes. Install a correctly sized electrical bonding jumper between the inlet and outlet pipes when these devices are installed in metallic plumbing systems. Inspect this unit carefully for carrier shortage or shipping damage before beginning installation of unit. This system should not be used for treating water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality. The unit is designed with the sole purpose of removing hardness. Use only lead-free solder and flux, as required by country and state codes, when installing soldered copper plumbing. Use caution when sweat joining metal pipes near this water conditioning system. Heat can adversely affect the plastic used in this system and bypass valve. Use only silicone grease for lubrication of this unit. Page 2

4 Do not allow this water softener to freeze. Damage from freezing will void this water softener s warranty. Do not store flammable or volatile chemicals near this water softener. For the purpose of plumbing system sizing, only the rated service (i.e."normal") flow and corresponding pressure loss may be used. The rated service flow rates are the flow rates Before you begin to install your Aquasmart TM water softener Turn off water mains and release pressure by turning on cold tap Locate mains water pipe this is usually located under the kitchen sink or in the pump house if you have a well supply. Decide on position where you want to locate your water softener the most common areas are: under your kitchen sink, outside wall of house, in pump-house, in the basement. The distance between the unit and a drain should be as short as possible. Since salt must be added periodically to the brine tank, the location should be easily accessible. Do not install any unit closer to a water heater than a total run of 10 feet (3m) of piping between the outlet of the softener and the inlet to the heater. Water heaters can sometimes overheat to the extent they will transmit heat back down the cold pipe into the unit control valve. Hot water can severely damage the softener. A 10-foot (3-m) total pipe run, including bends, elbows, etc., is a reasonable distance to help prevent this possibility. A positive way to prevent hot water from flowing from heat source to the softener, in the event of a negative pressure situation, is to install a check valve in the soft water piping from the softener. If a check valve is installed, make certain the water-heating unit is equipped with a properly rated temperature and pressure safety relief valve. Also, be certain that local codes are not violated. Do not locate unit where it or its connections (including the drain and overflow lines) will ever be subjected to room temperatures less than 1 o C (34 o F) or greater than 49 o C (120 o F). Do not install unit near acid or acid fumes. The use of resin cleaners in an un-vented enclosure is not recommended. TOOLS AND MATERIALS NEEDED Adjustable wrench, standard pliers, and larger adjustable jaw pliers or pipe wrench to fit sink drain slotted and Phillips head screwdrivers, pipe joint compound (thread seal) or Teflon tape, approved for use on potable water supplies hand or battery powered drill. APPROX TIME TO INSTALL IS 3 HOURS The setup is split into 3 sections. o Assembling your Aquasmart water softener. o Installing your water softener. o Configuring the settings on meter or timer controlled water softeners NOTE: The configuration for meter and timer have separate sections. Page 3

5 Assembling your Aquasmart TM water softener after taking delivery We recommend watching the help videos on (VIDEO CODE: 101-WS-MT-EN) which give a demonstration of this setup. The assembly is the same for meter and timer controlled units and all models. Refer to diagrams 1 & 2 on the next page during the assembly. Remove the blue plastic cover; take out the power supply and fittings box, the bypass assembly, your manual, and any plastic packaging 1. Fit the bypass assembly (A) onto the control unit (B). All o-rings (C) should be lubricated with the silicon lubricant packet included in the power supply box. Secure the bypass assembly to the control unit on both sides using the bracket screws supplied. (D) 2. Add the fittings (E). Remove the red fastened clips (F). Apply silicon lube to the o-rings (G). Push the o-rings into the bypass assembly (G). Put back on the red fasteners (F). 3. Note the flow direction arrows (H) for connecting the softener to your water supply. The flow direction arrows must match the flow of your water. 4. Open both bypass valves. (I) Use the tool supplied to turn the red bypass valves fully clockwise. The valves are open when both are parallel. NOTE: Failure to open these will bypass the water softener leaving you with hard water. 5. Connect the white brine suction hose to the control unit (J). Tighten to an airtight seal. Tighten with your hand, then tighten airtight with an adjustable wrench. Use an adjustable wrench to tighten the brass nut on the control unit also. NOTE: Loose seals on the brine suction hose if the most common cause of the unit malfunctioning. 6. Adjust the mixing valve (K). The mixing valve should be turned fully anti-clockwise in order for your unit to produce fully soft water. NOTE: the mixing valve is an option on some units 7. Connect the power supply and the meter cable The meter cable should slot (L) into the bypass assembly and click firmly (vi) in place. Connect he power cord and plug-in the power supply (vii). Page 4

7 Installing your Aquasmart water softener We recommend watching the help videos on (VIDEO CODE: 180-WS-MT-EN) which give a demonstration of this install. The install is the same for meter and timer controlled units and all models. All plumbing must conform to local codes. Standard commercial practices have been expressed here. Local codes may require changes to these suggestions. 1. Drain Line Connection (V) Ideally located, the unit will be above and not more than 6m (20feet) from the drain. For such installations, use an appropriate adapter fitting (not supplied), to connect 1.3cm (1/2inch) plastic tubing to the drain line connection of the control valve. IMPORTANT: Never insert drain line into a drain, sewer line or trap. Always allow an air gap between the drain line and the wastewater to prevent the possibility of sewage being back-siphoned into softener. NOTE: If the unit is located more than 6.1m (20feet) from drain, use 1.9cm (3/4inch) tubing for runs up to 12m (40feet). Purchase appropriate fitting to connect the 1.9cm (3/4inch) tubing to the 1.3cm (1/2inch) NPT drain connection. NOTE: If the unit is located where the drain line must be elevated, you may elevate the line up to 1.8m (6feet) providing the run does not exceed 4.6m (15feet) and water pressure at softener is not less than 2.75bar (40psi). You may elevate an additional 60cm (2feet) for each additional.7bar (10psi). NOTE: Where the drain line is elevated but empties into a drain below the level of the control valve, form a 18cm (7inch) loop at the far end of the line so that the bottom of the loop is level with the drain line connection. This will provide an adequate siphon trap. NOTE: Where the drain empties into an overhead sewer line, a sink trap must be used. 2. Turn off water mains and release the water pressure by turning on the cold tap. 3. Cut incoming water mains pipe (iii). NOTE: Make sure connection is taken before tee piece for the pipe going to the attic (i). 4. Connect mains pipe to water inlet on control valve (iii). Check the directional flow arrows on your unit (H on diagram 1) 5. Connect outlet from control valve (i) (ii) back to mains pipe supplying the house. 6. Tighten the brine suction hose (iv) NOTE: It is important that the brine suction hose is airtight. (J) (iv) 7. Connect backwash fitting on control valve to outside drain (v). 8. If installing inside the house drill 1.9cm (3/4inch) hole 5cm (2inches) form top of cabinet and install 1.3cm (1/2-inch) overflow pipe to outside (viii). 9. Overflow line connection. The plastic overflow fitting is already fitted on some models, for other models the fitting is included loose in your tank. To fit the overflow, drill a hold in the side of the brine tank, take care not to puncture the vessel inside. The hole should approximately 15cm (6inches) from the top of the tank. Attach length of 1.3cm (1/2-inch) I.D. tubing) to fitting and run to drain. (Tubing supplied in the water2buy DIY kit, you can purchases a DIY kit on water2buy.com) Page 6

8 Do not elevate overflow line higher than 7.5cm (3inches) below the bottom of overflow fitting. NOTE: Do not connect into the drain line of control unit. The overflow line must be a direct separate line from overflow fitting to drain, sewer or tub. Allow an air gap as per drain line instructions. 10. Add salt to brine tank you can fill this up to the top of the tank, add 3-4 litres of tap water from your kitchen tap. NOTE: There must be 13cm (5inches) of salt in tank at all times. As you see salt dissolve over the next few weeks refill at regular intervals (approx 4-6 weeks per bag of salt) 11. Set setting on control valve (see next step C configuring the settings) 12. After configuring the settings turn on the water. Turn on cold kitchen sink tap. There may be air in water let it run for 3-4 minutes. 13. Perform system checks: o Check for leaks at all joints and connections. o After 3 hours check for leaks all joints and connections again. o We recommend a further check after 24 hours Configuring the settings on Aquasmart TM meter controlled water softeners (AS200, AS500, AS800) We recommend watching the help videos on (VIDEO CODE: 105-WS-M-EN) which give a demonstration of this meter configuration. 13 Aquasmart Water softener FAQ and adjustments If you have a question Water2buy are happy to help, here are some of our most common questions and answers. We ve created a range of help videos on to demonstrate these adjustments. WHAT KIND OF SALT IS BEST? All Water2buy TM s Aquasmart TM water softeners are designed to use any water softeners salt of good quality, including rock, pellet, solar, or evaporated types. All rock salt, regardless of source, contains insoluble material, which collects at the bottom of the salt storage tank and requires periodic clean out. If purified salt products are used, the salt storage compartment will require less frequent clean-out, but you must check more frequently to prevent a bridging problem. HOW MUCH SALT SHOULD I PUT INTO TANK? You can fill the brine tank to the top with salt and when it gets down to the last 11 cm, refill the tank. The Average water softener uses 1 bag of salt per month. HOW CAN I START A MANUAL BACKWASH / REGENERATION CYCLE? On the timer can meter control units you can start a manual regeneration by turning the manual backwash knob (1) clockwise to the first position. Turn to the first position indicated below for your model. Do not run a manual backwash immediately before, after or during an automatic backwash. The process will take approximately 1 hour. Make sure the backwash knob returns to the service position when the cycle is complete. 1. Manual backwash knob. BRINE RINCE REFILL Diagram 5 IM GETTING HARD WATER WHAT SHOULD I DO? If you unexpectedly experience hard water, make these simple checks before calling Water2buy. One of the following conditions may be the reason for your interruption of service. Watch video: 140-WS-MT-EN on water2buy.com/help IMPORTANT: If any of the following conditions are found, the water softener should be manually recharged. POWER SUPPLY Check your power supply cord. Is it plugged fully into the electric outlet? Be certain that the outlet does not have a wall switch, which has been turned off. Reset softener to proper time of day and then plug in. BLOWN FUSE Check the house fuse or circuit breaker panel. Replace a blown-out fuse or reset an open circuit breaker. Page 12

14 POWER FAILURE Any interruption in your power supply, or time changes, such as daylight savings, will disrupt your softener s recharge schedule by causing the timer to run off schedule. Reset timer to proper time of day. SALT SUPPLY Check it. Refill if necessary and wait approximately four hours for the salt to dissolve before initiating a recharge cycle. INCREASED USAGE (video: 170-WS-T-EN & 105-WS-M-EN) Guests, family additions, new water-using appliances, etc. all will result in more water usage and will require more capacity from your softener. You can reprogram your recharging schedule by following the directions on adjustments for your softener in this manual. NO WATER If you aren t getting any water flow at all, make sure your water supply is working. Open a tap ahead of the softener (outside tap) to see if you have any water pressure. CONTINUOUS FLOW TO DRAIN (video: 160-WS-M-EN & 170-WS-T-EN) If water runs to drain continuously, check to make sure unit is not in recharge. If it is recharging, allow unit to finish cycle, then reset time of day if necessary. If the unit is not in recharge, contact Water2buy. SALT BRIDGING (Video: 130-WS-MT-EN) Salt bridging occurs when a space is formed between the salt and the water preventing the salt from dissolving in the water to make brine. No brine =no soft conditioned water! High humidity and/or use of some brands of purified salt products may cause a salt bridge to form. The best way to check and eliminate a salt bridging problem is to take a broom handle then carefully begin to probe down through the salt with the handle. Continue to probe and break up the bridge. MIXING VALVE (video: 140-WS-M-EN) If your unit has an optional mixing valve installed you need to turn it fully anticlockwise hand tight. Marked A in diagram 6. Diagram 6. Page 13

Remove the screen gause. Clean screen gause using a fine brush. Flush until clean. Flush water into the injector recess of the valve body to flush debris out through the injector recess. Clean and flush the injector with a pin or paperclip. Lubricate the O-rings on the injector, injector cap and injector screen with silicone lubricant. Reinstall the injector, injector cap and injector screen. Do not over tighten the plastic cap. Seat the cap lightly into position. Over tightening may cause breakage of the plastic cap that may not be immediately evident. Plug in the control valve. Follow the setup and configuration process for your unit. Slowly turn the bypass valves clockwise to open. Page 14

16 Diagram 8 CAN I ADJUST THE SALT REFILL ON THE TIMER-CONTROLLED UNIT? (Video: 100-WS-T-EN) Yes, The salt refill is preset for you. Should you need to adjust, you will need to unscrew the back plate on the control valve. Refill volume can be adjusted through refill regulator, diagram 9 (2). To adjust the refill volume, release the screw (1) by a half turn, and then turn the Refill Regulator to the correct volume for your particular Aquasmart TM water softener model. Finally tighten the screw (1). Do not place heavy objects on top of the salt storage tank or case. Use only mild soap and warm water when cleaning the exterior of the softener. Never use harsh, abrasive cleaning compounds or those, which contain acid, such as vinegar, bleach and similar products. WARNING: Protect your water softener and the entire drain line from freezing temperatures. DANGER: If your unit should freeze, do not attempt to disassemble it. Contact Water2buy.com Page 15

17 The timer is very accurate. Keep setting correct to assure recharging at the proper time. A periodic clean out of the Salt Storage Tank is necessary to keep your Water2buy Water Softener at peak operating efficiency. Do it at least every 2 years when the salt supply is low. Follow these step-by-step procedures: Remove the salt storage tank cover and the cap from the brine valve chamber. If you d like to save any clean, dry salt remaining in the tank, remove it and place it in a clean container. Using a scoop, dig out and discard as much remaining salt, water and debris as possible. Lay the salt tank on its side and direct a brisk stream of water from your garden hose to its inside to rinse out all residue. Using a household scrub brush and a mild soapy solution, clean the salt plate. This will complete the tank cleaning. Fill the salt storage tank with 10-15cm of water. Fill the tank with salt to within a few cm s from the top.
