2 Teaching s Before Class Lesson Preparation: Nothing can replace the time a teacher spends in prayer with our Master Teacher, the Lord God Almighty. We also recommend you read the Scriptures and lesson notes before class. Supplies needed for teaching: Bible Dry erase board or chalk board Dry erase markers or chalk Colored pencils Lesson pages for each student Bible Dictionary Teacher Notes Teacher Notes: The teacher notes are in green. They explain the important information that will need to be covered in the timeline and each section of the lessons. These notes will also be helpful for substitute teachers and can even be read to the students if desired. Bible Dictionary: We have provided a few words we recommend you look up in a Bible dictionary. These words will help when teaching the lesson and answering questions from your students. Teaching the Lesson Stick Figuring: As or after the Scripture is read, the teacher will stick figure that portion of Scripture onto the board. While students are drawing, teachers can discuss that part of the lesson. Students can either draw what the teacher has drawn or draw their own interpretations of the Scripture. We encourage the use of colors and creativity. We have found that the more the students draw, the more they remember. Some older students may opt to take notes in this section. Review Questions and Answers: This section gives teachers the questions and answers for the lesson review. These questions cover the who, what, when, where, why, and how of the lesson. We encourage teachers to add their own questions as time allows. Application: At Grapevine Studies, we believe that teachers determine how to apply each lesson. We encourage our teachers to spend time in prayer to determine what emphasis to put on that lesson. We have found this gives our teachers great freedom and is very effective. Notice that the last question is the application question for the lesson. The answer to this question will depend upon what the Lord has led you to emphasize in the lesson by Grapevine Studies 2

4 The Ten Commandments Memory Verse: Deuteronomy 6:5 Tea ch e r Moses at Mount Sinai Read aloud: Exodus 19:1-8 Discuss Moses at Mount Sinai: Three months after leaving Egypt, the children of Israel arrived at Mount Sinai. God reminded them of their deliverance out of Egypt and began to outline His expectations of them. Here we begin to see the IF/THEN passages of the Bible. If the people obeyed God s commands, then God promised them they would be His special people, a holy nation, and a kingdom of priests. By giving them The Law, He was showing them how to live a life that would be pleasing to Him. Draw and have students draw: God speaking to Moses about the two tablets at Mt. Sinai. Teacher Note for The Ten Commandments: I recommend a word study on each of the commandments. In this study, the Ten Commandments are written out using the NKJV. 1. You shall have no other gods before Me. Read aloud: Exodus 20:1-3 Discuss You shall have no other gods before Me: Unlike any other nation, Israel was to worship only one God. Draw and have students draw: The purple God triangle. Look up the following words in a Bible Dictionary: Gods (Exodus 20:3) Carved (Exodus 20:3) Vain (Exodus 20:7) Holy (Exodus 20:8) Honor (Exodus 20:12) Murder (Exodus 20:13) Covet (Exodus 20:17) 4

Read aloud: Exodus 20:4-6 Discuss You shall not make any carved image: Unlike other forms of worship, God would not let Himself be represented by any carved image. Draw and have students draw: A image with a red circle and slash through it. 3. You shall not take the name of the Lord in vain. Read aloud: Exodus 20:7 Discuss You shall not take the name of the Lord in vain: God wants us to seriously consider how we use His name. Draw and have students draw: A man speaking purple triangles. 4. You shall remember the Sabbath and keep it holy. Read aloud: Exodus 20:8-11 Discuss You shall remember the Sabbath and keep it holy: For six six days we are to work, and then take a Sabbath rest. Part of obeying God involves honoring our parents. Draw and have students draw: Your mom and dad. 6. You shall not murder. Read aloud: Exodus 20:13 Discuss You shall not murder: Murder and kill are not the same and must be distinguished here. Draw and have students draw: A man murdering another man. Draw and have students draw: A man kissing a woman with a red circle and slash. 8. You shall not steal. Read aloud: Exodus 20:15 Discuss You shall not steal: God has promised to supply what we need. Draw and have students draw: A man holding something behind his back. 9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. Read aloud: Exodus 20:16 Discuss You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor: There are many verses on lying and the tongue. Draw and have students draw: A judge and a witness. 10. You shall not covet. Read aloud: Exodus 20:17 Discuss You shall not covet: God wants us to be content with what He has given us. Draw and have students draw: A man with a little scooter looking at a big scooter. Lesson Review: 1. How did God give the laws and promises to the children of Israel? God spoke to Moses. Moses then told the people what God said. 2. The first four commandments concern man s relationship with whom? God. 3. The last six commandments concern man s relationship with whom? Other men. 4. Why did God give them the laws? To show them how to live a holy life. 5. What do we learn about God from these verses? God is holy and wants us to be holy.
