2 Future doctors The Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine will accept its first cohort of 50 students in Not only will it prepare Singapore s brightest talents for the demands of 21 st century healthcare, it will also introduce innovations to medical education in Singapore. The Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine combines NTU s core strengths in engineering and business with Imperial s world-renowned medical programme. Come 2013, an exciting chapter will begin when Singapore s newest medical school opens its doors to students. The culmination of a longstanding partnership between NTU and Imperial College London, which is ranked among the top ten universities in the world, the school will produce clinicians adept at leading interdisciplinary teams, as well as bring new technologies to the field of community-based medicine. Serving patients The Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine will boost efforts to meet an expected rise in healthcare demand in Singapore. Advances in medicine and higher living standards have contributed to longer life expectancies in developed countries; this has, in turn, brought about an increased burden of chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. As Singapore makes the transition from an expensive, hospital-based model of healthcare to a more affordable communitybased model, a doctor s role will become more complex. Besides the key functions of diagnosing and treating illnesses, doctors must also manage a range of administrative duties, work closely with fellow healthcare professionals and use new medical technologies effectively. This will be the mission of the medical school to foster leaders in clinical care who are attuned to the needs of patients in Singapore, and who can deliver premium healthcare within community settings. Interdisciplinary strengths To meet its goals, the school will combine NTU s core strengths in engineering and business with Imperial College London s world-renowned medical expertise. It s a relationship founded on many affinities; besides being among the seven founding members of the Global Alliance of Technological Universities in 2009, both institutions share a PhD programme in bioengineering and chemical & biomolecular engineering. Launched in April 2009, the programme marked the first time that either party had offered a joint PhD with another university. NTU first began discussions with Imperial College London about the new school in NTU President Prof Bertil Andersson, who was then Provost, was the driving force behind its formation. He notes the significance of the collaboration with regard to NTU s global standing. Imperial College London doesn t have an undergraduate programme with any other institution in the world, he explains. In fact, this is the first time that it is developing and delivering a course overseas. S$150 million gift to NTU Familiar with the latest advances: The Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine will cultivate doctors who are not only well-versed in medical matters and at ease with modern medical technologies, but also adept at leading teams of fellow healthcare professionals. The new medical school is named after the late founder of the Lee Foundation renowned business leader, pioneer and philanthropist Tan Sri Dato Lee Kong Chian. Lee Foundation made a S$150m gift towards the new medical school in January The Singapore government has also announced that it is giving a matching grant. Half of the S$150m gift will go to an endowment fund for scholarships, bursaries and other forms of student fi nancial support. The other half will form another endowment fund for the advancement of medical education and clinical research. Tan Sri Dato Lee had a vision to use his wealth not for personal betterment but to improve society as a whole, said a spokesman for the NTU Board of Trustees. His selflessness and generosity will be an inspiration to the students of this medical school. Lee Foundation said it was honoured to help NTU and Imperial College London advance medical education in Singapore. This school will contain some of the best features of current medical education, and also provide assistance to bright and needy medical students who can pursue their life s mission, said a Lee Foundation spokesman.

3 Engineering pedigrees The medical school will build on the pioneering work done by NTU s College of Engineering over the past decade through collaborations with the Singapore General Hospital on medical devices and medical technology. It will also leverage the strengths of the College of Science, home to projects in neuroscience, immunology, health systems, biosensing and drug delivery, to name a few areas. At the College of Humanities, Arts, & Social Sciences, healthcare-related issues are tackled through projects related to psychology, health economics, and health communications, among others. Similarly, the Nanyang Business School is also poised to lend its considerable expertise to students of the new medical school. Many of the projects across NTU explore the coming together of medicine, science, social sciences and technology currently among the most exciting areas of research. The interface between medicine and engineering is going to be very important, and in this regard I think NTU and Imperial College London are soulmates as both universities are strong in engineering, explains Prof Andersson. Clinician-educators As talks between NTU and Imperial College London progressed, it became clear that not only did both institutions share a common vision for medical education, they brought strengths greater than the sum of their parts. Imperial College s partnership with NTU presents an exciting opportunity to create a world-class medical school. Tomorrow s doctors will need to be equipped to face the challenges of the rapidly changing healthcare environment and to understand and use the new tools that are changing the face of biomedicine. Our program will equip tomorrow s graduates with the necessary skills and knowledge to address these unprecedented challenges, says Prof Stephen Smith, the new school s Founding Dean. The medical school s curriculum will adapt key elements of Imperial College London s proven educational model for the local context, with lessons delivered through methods such as e-learning modules, simulations, lectures, seminars, apprenticeships and problem-based learning exercises. Where possible, the basic science of medicine will be taught by clinicians. Another highlight of the curriculum is its emphasis on exposing students to real clinical care conditions, as early as during their first year in the programme. Those eager to experience and learn from a practising physician s round of challenges will have much to look forward to. PHOTO: IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON Peerless partnership: Imperial College London s Faculty of Medicine (left) is one of the largest medical schools in the United Kingdom and Europe, and has produced innovations in biomedical engineering and biosurgery. Over the years, NTU has developed healthcare-related strengths in regenerative medicine, biosensing and biomaterials. Medical school 101 The Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine will accept its first intake of 50 students in It will eventually take in 150 students a year. It will offer a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) degree, to be jointly awarded by NTU and Imperial College London. The school s founding Dean will be Prof Stephen Smith, Vice President (Research) at NTU. The Senior Vice Dean will be Prof Martyn Patridge, who holds Imperial College London s Chair in Respiratory Medicine. Faculty members will be drawn from Imperial College London, as well as recruited globally and from Singapore. The school s primary clinical partner will be Singapore s National Healthcare Group, a leading name in public healthcare recognised for the quality of its medical expertise and facilities. Part of the school will be at the new Novena campus next to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. Imperial is delighted to be strengthening its links with Singapore and cementing our medical school partnership with NTU. Working hand in hand, we will help to meet Singapore s future healthcare needs. 4 NTU is proud to name the school the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine in honour of the late philanthropist Tan Sri Dato Lee Kong Chian. His selflessness and generosity will be an inspiration to the students of the school. Innovation plus: The medical school will allow NTU to build on its work with innovative medicalrelated devices (such as stents and heart pumps), as well as to pioneer fresh solutions in biomedical research. Customised classes With the first cohort of students set to begin their studies in 2013, one key task will be to establish the medical school s faculty ranks. Senior faculty members of Imperial College London will be an integral part of the school. The faculty will be a global one, recruited from around the world. The school will also be looking for local talents to strengthen the ties to Singapore s medical community. To provide students with relevant clinical training, the medical school will also be partnering with Singapore s National Healthcare Group, a leader in public healthcare that is recognised for the quality of its medical expertise and facilities. Through its network of hospitals, primary healthcare polyclinics and national specialty centres, the National Healthcare Group will provide the school with vital training support. Leaders and managers Another unique aspect of the programme is that students will benefit from modules offered by other schools at NTU. As such, the curriculum will draw from programmes offered by NTU s Nanyang Business School, for example. Ranked first in Singapore for its MBA programmes, the Nanyang Business School is known for the depth and rigour of its offerings, particularly in business management. This will allow students to work more effectively with fellow healthcare professionals such as speech therapists and physiotherapists. The Nanyang Business School will have a major role to play in providing the training to develop the students not just as individual physicians, but as medical leaders and overall care managers. Graduates of the school will be able to lead medical teams and bring clinical care into homes and communities, as well as reach out to elderly patients in an ageing society. Aspirations in medicine For aspiring doctors, the launch of the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine represents a fantastic opportunity, giving more of Singapore s best and brightest students a chance to pursue medicine. This sense of anticipation is shared by NTU s partners. We are delighted to be joining forces with an institution that embodies many of our own aspirations, says Sir Keith O Nions, Rector of Imperial College London. This partnership gives us the chance to work with Singapore s talented students and also provides a rare opportunity to pioneer a new medical curriculum. Learning spaces: Part of the medical school will be integrated with the School of Biological Sciences at the heart of NTU s Yunnan Garden campus. Tech synergies While medicine will be the primary focus of the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, one area to k eep an eye on is its longer-term potential to pioneer medical devices and technologies. The interface between medicine, science and technology has proven to be rich ground for clinical breakthroughs such as pacemakers, dialysis machines, prosthetic devices, MRI and artificial organs. As the school develops, it will seek to build on NTU s strengths in engineering and business to explore fresh ways in which these fields can impact medicine. NTU already has a firm foundation on which to build; among the medicinerelated projects at the College of Engineering are ones that involve implants, drug delivery, cell delivery, regenerative medicine, biosensors, medical imaging, biomedical signal processing, bioinformatics, health informatics, bio-mechanics, mechanobiology and assistive technology. Drawing on Imperial College London s track record of reaping synergies between medicine and science and technology, the school will bring about more breakthroughs in biomedical engineering and robotic surgery, among other areas. It will start out not just training the best physicians, but also making a deep impact on the innovation of medical devices and the healthcare system as a whole.
