This report summarises the data results released in a series of reference tables by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on December 11th The ONS census site for all information is available: here The report has three sections: Summary of Key Points List of data tables within the release, including a description and embedded hyperlinks to the full datasets on ONS website. Selected extracts from each data table, showing the Slough position in numbers, percentages and ranks against other councils. Percentages are compared against: the regional position (South East England),, and England only. The percentages are also ranked amongst the 348 local authorities that comprise. In these ranked comparisons, Slough's position is highlighted in terms of the quartile in which it sits - showing clearly the particularly high and low positions against a range of data sets. How to read the table extracts: Table name and description Slough data (numbers) Slough data (percentages) Comparator percentages This row ranks Slough's percentage value amongst 348 local authorities. 1 = the highest value; 348 = the lowest value. Colour coded to reflect quartiles as in key to lower left. Key Points: Total population of 140,205 people. 99.6% of these live in a household, 0.4% live in a communal establishment. This is the lowest proportion living in communal establishments of any area across. Population density is 29th highest across, at 43.1 persons per hectare. (Table KS101EW) 9.1% of our residents are aged 0-4 years old. This is the second highest proportion of any of the 348 local authorities. Generally, we have a much younger population than the norm, with smaller proportions of older people. (Table KS102EW). Slough has high proportions of single adults at 34.8% of all usual residents aged 16 and over, and very low proportions of registered samesex civil partnerships (135 people, 0.1% of all residents). (Tables KS103EW and KS104EW). 20.0% of Slough's 50,766 households are one family units with dependent children (Table KS105EW). 8.9% of households comprise lone parents with dependent children (4,503 households). 39.2% of all households contain dependent children - this is the third highest proportion across. 5.7% of all households (2,911) have no adults in employment but dependent children. 2 Ethnicity: Tables KS201EW and QS202EW Slough is a highly diverse area as evidenced by table KS201EW, with just 34.5% of residents of White 'British' ethnicity. 17.7% of residents are Pakistani - the second highest proportion for this ethnic group across. 15.6% of residents are Indian. Just 56.2% of households have all household members of the same ethnic group (Table QS202EW). Of households where members have different ethnic groups, the largest proportion have differences within partnerships. National : Table KS202EW Table KS202EW shows details of the national identitiy of residents. 60.5% of residents evinced no English. Country of birth: 7.0% of usual residents were born in 'Accession EU' states - making Slough the area with the 9th highest proportion. 61.0% of residents were born in the UK; including these and others, 71.8% were born in Europe. 5.9% of residents were born in Poland (2nd highest proportion across ). Slough also sits within the highest 25% of council areas for the proportion of residents born in a range of European states (see Table QS203EW for details). 6.5% of residents were born in Africa with sizeable communities from a range of countries - including the second highest proportion of Zimbabweans across (at 1,352 people or 1.0% of total residents). 20.2% of residents were born in the Middle East or Asia; 1.3% in the Americas or Caribbean and 0.1% Australasia / Oceania. Passports held: Table KS205EW A low proportion of residnets (9.9%) hold no passport. 68.0% hold a UK passport. Household languages: Table KS206EW A low proportion of households (67.4%) have English as the main language for all members.15.5% of households in Slough contain no person with English as the main language (ranked 11th highest across ). Religion: Table KS209EW and Table QS210EW 10.6% of residents are Sikhs - making Slough the area with the single highest concentration of this faith group. We also have the 7th highest concentration of Muslims (23.3% of residents) and 1oth highest for Hindus (6.2% of residents). 0.5% of residents are Buddhists, 0.1% Jewish, 41.2% Christian and 12.1% follow no religion. Some 482 residents follow other religions. Greater detail is provided in Table QS210EW. Health and provision of unpaid care: Table KS301EW 83.9% of residents stated their health to be good or very good; 4.5% (some 6,297 people) stated it to be bad or very bad. 13.4% of residents declared that their health limits their day-to-day activities to some extent. Some 8.2% of residents stated they provided unpaid care on a weekly basis: some 2,591 provided 50 or more hours of this each week. Dwellings and household spaces: Table KS401EW 97.7% of household spaces in Slough have at least one usual resident - just 1,214 household spaces were devoid of usual residents. Household tenures and home ownership: Table KS402EW 18.7% of dwellings are owned outright by inhabitants, 34.0% are being purchased on a mortgage. 20.6% are social rented (13.1% from the council, 7.5% from other landlord). 24.4% of dwellings are privately rented - compared to just 16.3% across South East England. Dwellings: Rooms, bedrooms and central heating: Table KS403EW Slough's average household size is 2.8 people per household - the second highest across. 20.8% of households show 'overcrowding' (as evidenced by an occupancy rating of -1 or less) compared to just 8.5% across England and Wales. 12.8% of households show evidence of overcrowding in terms of sleeping space (bedrooms). Slough dwellings are on average smaller than the norm, with an average of 4.7 rooms per household. 2.7% of Slough dwellings (some 1,384 households) do not have central heating. Car or van availability: Table KS404EW Almost a quarter of Slough households do not have access to a car (23.4%). Of those that do, single car ownership is more common in Slough than across the rest of the nation. The area's 50,766 households account for some 60,827 motor vehicles. Communal establishment residents: Table KS405EW As previously stated, Slough has the lowest proportion of residents living in Communal establishments of any area across England and Wales. 2

3 A total of 508 residents live within a total of 83 Communal establishments, and Table KS405EW provides a breakdown of establishment type. Qualifications and students: Table KS501EW 20.1% of Slough residents aged 16 and over hold no qualifications. An above average percentage (14.7%) hold Level 1 qualifications, with lower than average possession of higher levels. 13.7% of residents hold ' qualifications', reflecting the high level of non-uk immigrants. Economic activity: Table KS601EW Of residents aged 16 to 74, 73.4% (73,819 people) are economically active. 26.6% are economically inactive (compared to 30.3% across ). A higher proportion of residents are unemployed and have never worked (1.0%) than the regional and national averages (0.4% and 0.7% respectively). 2.1% (2,121 persons) were long-term unemployed. Tables KS602EW and KS603EW provide breakdowns of economic activity for male and female residents respectively. In Slough, 80.6% of males and 66.1% of females aged 16 to 74 are economically active. Hours worked: Table KS604EW Of those usual residents aged 16 to 74 who were in employment the week before the census, 25.2% were employed on a part-time basis and 74.8% on a full-time basis. Industry of occupation: Table KS605EW This table shows a breakdown of emplyment by type of industry and shows Slough to have a particularly higher than average proportion of employment in 'Administrative and support service activities' (8.0% - ranked 2nd of 348) and 'Transport and storage' (12.6% - ranked 3rd of 348). Tables KS606EW and KS607EW detail the same analysis for male and female residents respectively. Occupation: Table KS608EW This table depicts the category of occupation of employed Slough residents using a 9 category classification system. We are among the lowest quartile of areas for the proportions employed in categories 1 ('Managers, directors and senior officials') and 5 ('Skilled trades '). For categories 7, 8 and 9 Slough is within the highest quartile of areas for employment in these positions - which are generally lower paid. Tables KS609EW and KS610EW show the same analysis for male and female residents respectively. Occupation using NS-SeC classification: Table KS611EW This table depicts the category of occupation of employed Slough residents using the 15 category National Statistics Socio-Economic Classification (NS-SEC). This provides an alternative view of occupation and should be considered alongside Table KS608EW referenced above. We are among the lowest quartile of areas for the proportions employed in lower skilled / lower paid categories. Tables KS612EW and KS613EW provide the same analysis but for male and female residents respectively. Migration - year of arrival in the UK: Table QS801EW Only 61.0% of all usual Slough residents were born in the UK (compared to 86.6% for as a whole). The remainder - about two in every five residents - have all migrated to the UK at some point. Slough has residents who arrived in each of the bands used within this table, showing that the borough has attracted migrants continuously. We have 64 people who arrived prior to 1941 and 3,093 who arrived in the most recent period of For each time period of the classifications used from 1951 onwards, Slough is ranked amongst the top quartile of areas as having a high proportion of residents who arrived in that time span. One fifth of usual residents (20.7%) came to the UK from between 2001 and Migration - age of arrival in the UK: Table QS802EW Only 61.0% of all usual Slough residents were born in the UK (compared to 86.6% for as a whole). The remainder - about two in every five residents - have all migrated to the UK at some point. Slough has residents in each of the category bands used in this table - ranging from those who came to the UK as young children to those who came as nonagenerians. 16,379 residents arrived aged under % of our whole population; 37,662 arrived aged between 18 and 59 (26.8% of our whole population), and 611 arrived aged 60 or older (0.5% of our whole population). Migration - length of residence in the UK: Table QS803EW Only 61.0% of all usual Slough residents were born in the UK (compared to 86.6% for as a whole). The remainder - about two in every five residents - have all migrated to the UK at some point. 3.7% of our usual resident population (5,133 people) have been living in the UK less than 2 years. A further 6.5% (9,149 people) have been here for between 2 and 5 years. 10.2% of residents have lived in the UK for between 5 and 10 years, and 18.6% for 10 years or more. 3
