Included here is a synopsis of the first two Between Earth and Sky sample sessions, alternative choices, and supply lists. Any item marked with a * indicates that you will need to bring this with you. Other items are in the on-site lending library box. Volunteer box watchers will check up on the box. We thank them for their dedication and you for respecting the materials and leaving them in good order. Please leave the box in as good or better condition than you found it - complete the inventory check-off list and let us know if you find anything needs replacing or replenishing. 3 Between Earth and Sky for Daises Sample Session 1 Getting Ready for the Road Goal: Daisy Girl Scouts begin to express their feelings and start to gain knowledge in the outdoors in nature as well as experiencing the fun of travel. Materials 2 Adult Between Earth and Sky Guides 15 Girl Between Earth and Sky Journey books sheets of paper Crayons Conflict cards Colored Ribbon (for luggage tag) Luggage tag example Scissors (2 adult pair please cut luggage tags out for girls) Items from Nature (please have girls bring in 3-4 items from outside) Luggage tag print outs Blue Bucket * Smart Snacks, fruits and veggies with bright colors (there are festive snacks offered throughout the girl s book to try out.) Opening Ceremony Girls form a circle. Encourage each girl to participate in the discussion. Have girls begin the discussion by talking about their thoughts and feelings. Have Girls make a luggage tag book mark (see example in binder) Introduce the girls to the Flower Friends and their meaning Read the short introduction story A Road Trip to Remember on page 5 in the Girls book. Lead a discussion and ask questions to get the girls thinking (sample questions are in Adult Guide on page 45 under Story Time: Travel Near, Travel Far. Please feel free to make up your own.) Role-Play: How Do We Settle Conflict? Have girls pair up in groups of two or three to do some role-playing. Give each group a scenario (refer to conflict role-playing insert or use your own) Explain the definition of a conflict and what it means

4 to compromise. Remember to have the girls consider the feelings of others when they chose partners. Have girls work on a role-play that solves their conflict by compromising. Have the girls share thoughts and ideas of times compromising is a good idea or share examples of when they have had to solve a conflict. Taking a Walk, Outdoors or In If you can, get the girls to go outside for a nature walk. While the girls are out have each girl collect a natural item but have them all collect the same type of natural item, before going out you can have the girls decide as a group if they will each be collecting a leaf, acorn, pinecone, or any other natural item that the group comes up with. Let them know that when they return back inside they will be drawing a picture of their natural item. (Before the Daisies go outside please read to them Leave No Traces on page 20 in the Adult Guide) Which One Is Mine? Once the girls are outside have them use their observation skills, such as looking at different colors, shapes, smelling the outdoor air and paying close attention to unique features. Once the girls are back inside have them sit in a circle with their natural item. Encourage the girls to talk about their natural item. Example, Do any of the leaves have a bite out of them? Are any of the acorns cracked or missing their tops? Do any of the pinecones have seeds falling out or fur stuck to them? Are any of the acorns missing their tops? Have the girls touch their items so that they can feel the textures and describe how they feel. Using crayons have each girl draw a picture of the similar item that the group has chosen on a sheet of paper. Do not have the girls put their name on their drawing. When each girl has completed their drawing collect them and have the girls sit in a circle while you scatter their drawings in the middle of the circle. (Refer to page 47 in Leaders Guide) As a group, can you mach each object to its sketch? Tell the girls not to tell which one is there until the end. What makes it easy or hard to match the real item to the sketch?

5 Closing Ceremony Girls form and stand in a circle. Invite girls to go around the circle and say how they re feeling after the first journey session. Are they Excited? Happy? Energized? Write down all the words so you can add them to your Blue Bucket. Invite girls to close their first session with a friendship squeeze. Let the girls know that this is called a closing ceremony and explain to them that a ceremony means celebrating something in a special way and that they are celebrating being together as Girl Scouts. Tell the girls they can think up their own ceremonies throughout their journey. * The Blue Bucket of Words. The Blue Bucket is where the girls will collect good ways to talk and their feelings. Throughout the journey please use slips of paper to record your group and add them to the bucket to be discussed later. Looking Ahead for Session 2 To prepare for the next Science Time journey session, girls should Collect soil samples from outside. See pages in Leaders Guide; use the pictures for inspiration for the Girl s team poster they will be making.

6 Sample Session 2 Our Road Trip Begins Goal Daises continue to explore what makes them unique as they start to consider the feelings of their sister Girl Scouts and expand their knowledge of colors and shapes in nature. Materials 2 Adult Between Earth and Sky Guides 15 Girl Between Earth and Sky Journey books Large paper Paper* notebook or copy paper size crayons index cards Plastic baggies Spoons 3 Soil Samples Decorative bits Scissors (5 pairs - * you may wish to bring additional) Glue Sticks Opening Have a Great Trip and how are you feeling? Have the girls gather together in their Daisy circle and tell them that today they will say Have a great Trip to one another in French, a language known by Mari, the Marigold. In French the word Bon voyage! means have a good trip. Have the girls go around the circle so they can each say Bon voyage to each other. Once they have each had a chance to say it to someone have them all say it together as a group. Now let the Daises know they have a special job today. Remind them of the last time how they talked about their feelings in session 1. Today in session 2 we will pay close attention to how others feel. Tell the Daises that today they will pay careful attention to the Daisy Girl Scout that is sitting to the right of them and have each girl look to the right of them so they know who they will be focusing on throughout the session. Throughout the session their job is to try and tell if the Daisy to the right of them is feeling Sad? Tired? Bored? Excited?

7 At the end of your time together the girls can tell how they thought their Daisy friend was felt throughout the session and she will let the group know if they were right. Story Time Today the girls will be reading A Road Trip to Remember read with the girls pages 7,8 and then page 12 up to the Paragraph where Lupe says I am sprucing up my car, I m getting ready for a road trip. Show the girls the pictures of Lupe s pedal powered car and its special features. (Pages 1,8, 12 Girls book) What do you think of Lupe s car? Does it look fun to ride in? What parts of the car do you recognize from nature? What parts of the car have you never seen before? Did you notice how the car is the same color as Lupe? If you could build a car, what would it be like? What color would it be? Role Play: How I Help My Friends Have the girl s pair up to do some role playing. As the girls continue to build their communication skills they will focus on demonstrating caring and helpful behavior. This links directly to the National Girl Scout Leadership Connect outcome, girls develop healthy relationships that they will build throughout the journey. Remind the girls of the part of the story in which Zinni is said to like to help her friend Lupe. Ask for two volunteers to role play. Give the girls this scenario: You and your mom stop at your best friend s house to pick her up and walk to school together. Your friend is running late. She is rushing to get ready and seems upset. What do you do? Would you yell at your friend and say things like Hurry up! We can t wait for you! Why aren t you ready? Or would you tell her not to rush and that s its OK to be a little late? Would you offer to make sure she had everything she needs? Her lunch? Her backpack? Her gloves and hat if it s cold out? What else might you do to be helpful and caring? If you have more time see if the group can think of more scenarios to role play and include the entire group. To end have the girls decide on one important way to be helpful and caring, add these ideas to the teams Blue Bucket.

8 Science Time: The Sweet Smell of Soil In the story A Road Trip to Remember, the sweet smell of soil can be smelled inside Lupe s car. This is a chance for Daisies to learn how fresh soil can smell. Using the bags and spoons provided have the Daises take soil samples from different surrounding areas or places they go. Have the Daises place the soil samples on the trays so that they can smell them and compare. If the girls are not afraid of getting their hands dirty have them touch the samples to see if they feel different. Talk about what common types of soil are found in you region. *if you can find a guest gardener have them come in and talk about different soil types. A Walk in Nature to Find Colors Before heading out for a walk with the girls talk to them about looking for and finding all the wonderful colors of nature. Have the girls take turns naming their favorite colors. Remind the girls that each flower friend is a different color and that they can see them inside the book. Have each girl draw a square of their favorite color on the index card (if they can write have them write the color next to it) Have the group put all their square together if the list is not diverse have the girls add in more fancy colors. Show the girls examples of colors using crayons or the pictures of the flower friends. On your nature walk have the girls share what colors they see outside, at the end of the walk have them discuss the colors they found in nature. How many colors did you find on our list? Were there any you couldn t find? Did any colors you found outdoors surprise you at all? Did any disappoint you? In any way? How did being outdoors in nature make you feel? How did seeing the different colors make you feel? Did you feel any different when looking at different colors? Where else might we look for colors outdoors? Do you think we could find places with even more colors? Where? * If you would like to try the colors and feelings exercise please read the side panel of the Leaders Guide on page 53. Closing Ceremony Have the girls gather back together in their Daisy circle. Go around the circle and ask each girl to say how she thought the girl on her right was feeling. For example she might say I think Erica was feeling happy today because she was smiling

9 and laughing a lot, Then Erica would say whether or not that was how she was felt or if she was feeling a different way and why. Complete the session with a friendship squeeze and encourage the girls to share their stories with their friends. Looking Ahead to Session 3 For the next session girls will be focusing on the Science Time activity and getting a chance to see how plants drink water (see page 58 in Leaders Guide.) Please have your Daisy Friends and Family Network bring a plant or two that can stand slightly wilted and then perk up quickly ( a tomato plant in a pot is a good candidate.) Inviting a gardener or a farmer is also a great idea.
