Backup Exec Panther Beta Product Overview The Backup Exec Panther Beta software helps ensure that business critical data is always protected and always available through continuous data protection for Windows servers. It is an evolution that combines tried and trusted Backup Exec technology with new innovations and diskbased data protection to provide faster and more reliable backup and restores over traditional tape media. Because it is a disk-based solution, data is protected in a continuous mode that provides granular restore from points in time throughout the day. It also enables the simultaneous backups of multiple servers. The Backup Exec Panther Beta software integrates with Backup Exec 10 for Windows Servers for traditional tape-based data protection, and delivers integrated management via the Backup Exec SmartLink technology. Backup Exec Panther Beta reduces overall administration costs by providing efficient and immediate end-user restores with the industry's only web-based data recovery tool. Through a simple, web interface, users can retrieve their own files without requiring IT assistance. Because it is web-based, no software or client is required on the end-users' desktops or laptops. Thus, no client software has to be updated or maintained. Consider the following real-world data protection challenges and solution. Challenges Situation 1 A Windows-based organization has a number of file servers that are routinely backed up to a Backup Exec media server. At night, the IT personnel back up the files to tape attached to the media server. The tape must be managed, rotated, and moved off-site for long-term data protection and disaster recovery. Goal To improve data protection and reduce costs, IT would like to provide ongoing, continuous data protection for the file servers, and back up the data to disk for faster backups and restores. Then, on a regular basis back up the data to tape for long-term data protection and disaster recovery. Situation 2 A medium-sized Windows-based business has a central office and a number of remote offices. Each remote office has a number of staff desktops and laptops from where files are routinely saved to local or remote servers. At night, IT personnel archive the files on the local server to tape. The tapes are then physically transported to the central office for storage. If system failures occur, the data is returned to the remote office, and then restored to the local server. When a user needs a file restored, it is a long, manual process that utilizes extensive IT resources and time

Goal To centralize backups and reduce costs, IT would like to automate the process to achieve the following. o o o o o Solution Files are backed up as soon as changes are made. The backed up data from all offices is simultaneously directed to the central office. The cumulative data at the central office is stored to disk. The stored data is backed up to tape for longer term data protection and disaster recovery. IT would also like to reduce the time it takes to restore files, and would like employees to be able to recover their own lost files. IT is running Backup Exec and has installed Backup Exec Panther Beta to automate their data protection process. As a result, they have successfully accomplished their goals, as follows. o o o o As soon as a file is stored to the local (Business) server, the data is immediately backed up to a Protection server, located either locally or at the central office. As changes are made to a file, those changes are captured and protected continuously. That is, all file changes are immediately backed up to the Protection Server. All continuous protection jobs (Business Servers to a single Protection Server) are managed by a single Administrator using the Backup Exec Panther Beta Administration Console. For additional protection, the Protection Server is backed up to a Backup Exec media server, where it is archived to tape and from which the data can be restored immediately upon large-scale system failure. Additionally, in the case of corrupted files or folders, end-users can retrieve specific versions of files directly back to their workstations using the Backup Exec Panther Beta Web Retrieval Interface. No IT assistance is required for end-user data retrievals, freeing up IT resources for other business needs. Features & Benefits Feature Continuous protection Easy recovery Full system restore Powerful Administration Console Description Backup Exec Panther Beta backs up files on a local area network (LAN) and writes them immediately to a destination, with no wait time or preset time intervals. This keeps productivity high while protecting the organization s critical information. Any user in the network can restore files by logging on to the Web Retrieval Interface. This enables people to recover their own work without intervention by system administrators. Entire servers can be backed up, including system-level files. In the event of a system-wide failure, such as a virus attack, Business Servers (sources) can be quickly restored to a previous state. System administrators can back up and restore from any source

Feature SmartLink to VERITAS Backup Exec for Windows Servers Flexible backup options Customized backup schedules Customized retention properties Discovery Scalable protection Description The Administration Console enables you to define backup destinations, customize jobs, view statuses, and learn of any issues that arise. Existing VERITAS Backup Exec users can view some continuous protection activities within Backup Exec. For example, you can view logs for backup jobs. Using Backup Exec also enables you to move disk-based backups to tape for long-term storage. Back up only the specific data you need. Save on system resources such as bandwidth and storage space by backing up only the information that needs to be recovered in case of file corruption or a system failure, or for compliance purposes. Back up files on demand, or schedule regular, periodic, and continuous backups to run automatically. Retention properties define how long to keep daily, weekly, and monthly backups on disk. Intuitive search capabilities enable users to find files by file name, modification date, specific file type, or file size. Information can be backed up from sources in the current network, as well as from new servers as they are added to the backup group. Key Components Backup Exec Panther Beta system consists of the following key components. Backup Group The Backup Group consists of only one Continuous Management Service, at least one Business Server, one Protection Server, the Administration Console, and the Web Server. Business Servers Business Servers store data that is routinely saved by end-users during the course of their daily operations. Business Servers are the source of the data that will be backed up to a Protection Server. Business Servers must therefore reside in the same Backup Group as the Protection Server. Each Business Server requires that the Continuous Protection Agent be installed. Protection Server More than one Protection Server can be installed in the Backup Group. In most cases, the Protection Server is the destination of the backup data. It is typically installed at a primary location or a central office during the initial "Complete" installation of Backup Exec Panther Beta. The Protection Server hosts the Web Server component that allows users to retrieve data via their Web Retrieval Interface

Continuous Management Service The Continuous Management Service (CMS) provides primary control of the backup processes, retains configuration settings from the Administration Console, and manages the continuous protection system based on the settings. Only one CMS may be installed in a Backup Group, and it must be installed before any other Backup Exec Panther Beta components. The CMS should be installed on a server appropriate for its use and have a fixed IP Address. Continuous Protection Agent A Continuous Protection Agent must be installed on all servers within the Backup Group that will act as a source (Business) or destination (Protection) server. The Protection Agents are responsible for managing the collection of data during backups and the restoration of data during restores. Administration Console The Administration Console controls all aspects of Backup Exec Panther Beta, including defining sources and destinations, creating backup and restore jobs, and defining backup and snapshot schedules. Additionally, the Administration Console is used to view and respond to alerts, monitor backup and restore jobs, and obtain product updates from VERITAS. Web Server The Web Server is a feature of the Continuous Management Service that allows end-users to retrieve versioned copies of files directly back to their workstations without administrator assistance. Web Retrieval Interface The Web Retrieval Interface is the gateway by which end-users access the Web Server to retrieve files. The Web Retrieval Interface utilizes Internet browsers (Internet Explorer 6.0 or later, and others). Software is not required on the end-user workstations. Users can search for a full or partial file name, browse to the location where their files are stored, view all versions of a file that were backed up, and select a copy of the files they need. When the files are selected, a copy can be downloaded without assistance from the system administrator. Indexing Database The Indexing database holds a directory of files that are available to end-user file retrieval using the Web Server and Web Retrieval Interface. It also supports search and recent activity features. Backup Exec SmartLink SmartLink allows Backup Exec users to determine the status of the Backup Exec Panther Beta backup job before or during the Backup Exec backup job. Remote Agent for Windows Servers (RAWS) Backup Exec Panther Beta uses the Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Servers (RAWS) to access System State information for backup. RAWS is an optional component and should be installed on any Business Server that needs to have its System State protected. RAWS should also be installed on the Protection Server if it will be protected by Backup Exec

A Backup Exec Panther Beta Use Model Following is an idealized use model for installing and running Backup Exec Panther Beta. Refer to the Use Model figure (below) for specific functional steps. 1. End-users save files and folders to local file servers (Business Servers) as part of their normal daily work. All Business Servers that need to share data are networked and collectively referred to as a Backup Group. 2. A full suite of Backup Exec Panther Beta components is installed using the Complete option of the Installation Wizard on a selected server. The Complete installation includes the Continuous Management Service (CMS), a Continuous Protection Agent (CPA), Administration Console, Web Server, and optionally Remote Agent for Windows Servers (RAWS). Although not required, small enterprises might select a dedicated server that will be a destination (Protection Server) of their backups. This server might best be located at their central office or near their IT department. Larger enterprises might prefer installing the initial Backup Exec Panther Beta components on a server that also acts as a Backup Exec media server. Combining management tasks onto a single dedicated server will greatly enhance administration of the overall data protection system. 3. Additional Backup Exec Panther Beta components are Push installed using the Components Wizard from the Administration Console that was previously installed. Push install is used to add additional Administration Consoles, Continuous Protection Agents (CPAs), or both to the Backup Exec Panther Beta system. Backup Exec SmartLink and is installed with the Console, and the Indexing services of the Web Server and RAWS are installed with the CPA. Although only one Continuous Management Service may be installed in the Backup Exec Panther Beta system, Continuous Protection Agents must be installed on all Business Servers (source of backup data) and Protection Servers (destination of backup data). Any number of Consoles may be installed in the system. 4. Using the Backup Destination Wizard from the Administration Console, one or more locations are created for the backup data. The Backup Destination Wizard is used to identify the destination (Protection Server) of the data, the directories where the data will be backed up, and also the schedules and retention policies of data snapshots for file versioning. For example, separate destination locations (designated Protection Servers) will be required for financial data that is to be backed up to a financial server in the accounting department, employee data that is to be backed up to a server in human resources, and customer records to be backed up to a server in the sales department. 5. Backup Exec Panther Beta Backup Jobs are created to back up data from one or more Business Servers to a Protection Server using the New Backup Job Wizard. The Backup Job Wizard is accessed from the Administration Console. When configuring jobs, you select the data to be backed up and the schedule for the backup job. A backup job can be scheduled to run at specified times (periodically) or as files and folders incur any user changes (continuously). 6. As soon as the data has been backed up to the Protection Server and snapshots are made, it is indexed and made available to the Web Server for end-user retrieval

7. End-users retrieve specific files and folders from the Web Server directly back to their workstations using the Backup Exec Panther Beta Web Retrieval Interface and their Internet browsers. Since the data was backed up with specified snapshots, users can select specific versions of their data to be restored. All files on the Business Server can be backed up to the Protection Server, but only the files exposed as shares on the Business Server will be visible in the Web Retrieval Interface. 8. In the event of a system failure at one or more Business Servers, the backed up data can be quickly restored from the Protection Server. Backup Exec Panther Beta restore jobs are configured using the Administration Console. 9. Additionally, as soon as the data has been backed up to the Protection Server, it can be backed up to a Backup Exec Media Server for advanced protection. 10. In the event of a system failure or data loss at a Protection Server, use Backup Exec to quickly restore the data. 11. A Backup Exec Panther Beta component, Backup Exec SmartLink, is configured so that the status of specified backup jobs is viewable in the Backup Exec Job Logs and Alerts. This option allows administrators to determine the quality and completion of the Backup Exec Panther Beta jobs prior to or during the Backup Exec backup job
