FA Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Football The FA Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Football uses the following formats to support the delivery of the practical elements of the course; Technique Practice Skill Practice Game-related Practice Themed Practice Throughout the course tutors will use the various formats to deliver the technical syllabus of the FA Level 2 course (Reference - FA Level 2 Coaching Technical Handbook)
FA Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Football Practical Topic Definitions Technical Practice This is an unopposed practice with the emphasis on the development of a game technique. Challenges to the development of the technique may be gradually introduced and will be in the form of increased or decreased time, area, target or degree of difficulty in practice depending on the rate of improvement in the players' performance.
FA Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Football Practical Topic Definitions Skill Practice This is an opposed practice with the emphasis on developing the bond of technique and decision making. The practice contains objectives for all players that are derived from the technical theme being practiced. Appropriate areas, the number of players involved and imposed 'conditions' will vary around the skill theme for development.
FA Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Football Practical Topic Definitions Small sided game A directional game-practice involving targets and utilising even numbers of players per team (Level 2-4 v 4). Additional players may be used as for servers, targets or floaters.
FA Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Football Practical Topic Definitions Practical theme For their independent assessment candidates will be asked in 35-minutes to deliver a coaching session which must be a progressed session to develop an aspect of the Level 2 Practical Syllabus. The session should take the players through a technical practice, a skills practice, culminating in a small-sided-game that applies the topic into a game situation.
Attacking & Defending Principles of Play
FA Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Football Attack Create space Spread out Penetration Going forward Support In front and behind the ball Width Go wide Length & Depth Attack in numbers Improvisation Intelligence around the penalty box Exploit = Use Create = Make Maintain = Keep
FA Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Football Defence Pressure/Delay Nearest player to the ball Stop forward play Stand up Support Cover/Recover Balance Reorganise defence Restraint Control Compactness Win the ball & squeeze the play Predict = Expect Deny = Stop Restrict = Limit
Coaching Styles and Effective Communication Continuum Coaching methodology COMMAND QUESTION & ANSWER OBSERVATION & FEEDBACK GUIDED DISCOVERY TRIAL & ERROR Player/coach interventions Coach tells & shows required solution Coach leads with question to gain response from players Coach & players observe Coach asks a question or issues a challenge Players and/or coach decide on the challenge Example I want you to..! What do you think? Let s watch this! Can you show me..? Try for yourself..! Description Coach tells, explains & shows how to do something Coach poses question & players offer verbal solution to challenge Players & coach observe & discuss feedback Coach challenges & players offer visual demonstration of possible solution Players are encouraged to find solutions with minimal support from coach
Practical Coaching Session
Example Sessions - Running With The Ball Technique Practice 1.2 teams of 4 one inside area, other on perimeter 4 balls 2. Receive ball from outside and run with it into other half of the pitch before passing to available player on the outside - receive back and repeat four times. 3. Swap roles with a red. Skill Practice 1. Waves practice. Reds serve into two on field players who seek to run ball into other half and play through to reds at far end. Receiving reds enter pitch and play 2 vs. 1 coming back the other way - repeat 2. If def wins they score by running ball over nearest end line Game Related Practice 1. 2 teams of Directional run ball into end zone and stop it to score. Opposition collect ball and attack back opposite direction.
Running With The Ball Simple Attacking Principles Create. Maintain.. Exploit Space Coaching Considerations Running With The Ball Recognise space/opportunity/defenders Adjust body to receive First touch Travel quickly/effectively Head up where possible Leading foot Execute outcome: pass, shot, dribble
Defending Outnumbered Technique Practice 1.2 teams of GK s 2. Concurrent practice attackers play onto pitch and play 2 vs. 1 unopposed. Attackers run ball over dotted line, which is line at which defender retreats no further (in technique practice) play to GK. 3.Swap defender with resting player on side and repeat. Skill Practice 1. As in Technique practice, except attacking team seek to score in goal and defender / goalkeeper try not to concede. 2. If defender / goalkeeper re-gain run ball into middle area 3. 2 nd defender recovers into practice to act as a recovering defender Game Related Practice 1. 2 teams of 4 + GK s 2. Look at opportunities for attacking from regains to support team to practice defending outnumbered
Defending Outnumbered Coaching Considerations Defending When Disorganised Deny Body stance, weight, prepared to act Win ball from poor touch/pass Do not track poor forward runs e.g. offside Step up/in and eliminate overload GK to protect goal and space behind last def Delay Body stance, weight neutral Drop and narrow Remain between ball and goal Threaten ball if/when possible Wait for recovery runs to eliminate overloads GK to protect goal and space behind last def Deflect Not able to prevent quick forward play Prioritise risks Allow play to wide rather than central areas Do not leave opponents unmarked centrally Be patient opposition must bring ball central to score Press ball when shooting becomes an option GK to protect goal and space behind last def Defend Last resort a defender must commit Distance from goal? Who presses? Line of pressure Adjustment of other defenders based on prioritising risk GK prepared for shot stopping and protecting the reduced space behind defenders Simple Defending Principles Deny. Restrict.. Predict Space Coaching Considerations Recovery Runs How deep? What line? Apply Pressure Supply Cover Destroy Support Available to Counter
