Segura-Vakharia Room 248 ESPAÑOL 2 TEXTBOOK: REALIDADES 2 COURSE DESCRIPTION: The development of skills begun in the first year of the language is continued. Greater emphasis is placed on oral proficiency, listening, reading and writing. Knowledge of grammar is expanded, including object pronouns and most of the verb tenses (preterite and imperfect) beyond the present. Cultural information is taught through basic content readings and supplemental materials. PREREQUISITES: Spanish I (An earned grade of C or higher is recommended in the prerequisite courses) GRADING: THE GOAL OF GRADING AND REPORTING IS TO PROVIDE THE STUDENTS WITH FEEDBACK THAT REFLECTS THEIR PROGRESS TOWARD THE MASTERY OF THE INDICATORS AND OBJECTIVES FOUND IN THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK PROGRESS GUIDES.

2 FACTORS BRIEF DESCRIPTION GRADE PERCENTAGE PER QUARTER CLASS WORK STUDENTS WILL BE ASSESSED IN EACH OF THE FIVE (5) NATIONAL FOREIGN LANGUAGE STANDARDS: COMMUNICATION, CULTURES, CONNECTIONS, COMPARISONS, AND COMMUNITIES. ALL GRADES IN THIS SECTION MUST BE LABELED BY STANDARD. CLASSROOM PARTICIPATION WILL BE PART OF THE COMMUNICATION STANDARD IN THIS SECTION. 35% HOMEWORK ASSESSMENT STUDENTS WILL BE ASSESSED IN EACH OF THE FIVE (5) NATIONAL FOREIGN LANGUAGE STANDARDS: COMMUNICATION, CULTURES, CONNECTIONS, COMPARISONS, AND COMMUNITIES. ALL GRADES IN THIS SECTION MUST BE LABELED BY STANDARD. STUDENTS WILL BE ASSESSED IN EACH OF THE FIVE (5) NATIONAL FOREIGN LANGUAGE STANDARDS: COMMUNICATION, CULTURES, CONNECTIONS, COMPARISONS, AND COMMUNITIES. ALL GRADED ASSIGNMENTS IN THE ASSESSMENT SECTION MUST BE LABELED BY STANDARD. 20% 45% NOTE: Work that is plagiarized or produced using a translation program will receive a zero. GRADES: The grading scale is as follows: A = % B = 80-89% C % D = 60-69% E = 0-59% REQUIRED MATERIALS: ring binder 2. SPANISH/ENGLISH diccionario (60,000 words or more) 3. Paper and writing utensil (blue/black ink only) EXPECTATIONS: 1. COME PREPARED FOR CLASS: This includes bringing the textbook, binder, Spanish-English dictionary, paper and pen. NOTE: You will not be permitted to go to your locker or to another classroom to get your notebook or class book once class has started.

3 2. BE ON TIME: All students will be seated in their assigned seats when the bell rings. Students entering the room after the bell without an excused note will be marked tardy and will not be able to do the warm-up or turn in homework. Repeated tardiness will result in contacting the parent/guardian and writing up the student with a PS-74 form. NOTE: I only accept a tardy excuse from an administrator, guidance, security, and the nurse. 3. PARTICIPATE: This means that the time in the classroom is spent actively working on the goals of the class: learning how to speak, read, and write in Spanish. This also includes responding to the questions and volunteering in oral activities and games. 4. RESPECT the teacher's right to teach and your classmate's right to learn. Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Adhere to the rules in the Code of Conduct. 5. BE COURTEOUS TO ALL: No foul language will be tolerated. 6. RAISE YOUR HAND to request permission to speak and move from your seat. 7. WEAR YOUR ID.AT ALL TIMES: NO ID NO SERVICES. 8. CLEANLINESS: You are to keep your desk area clean and tidy. Maid service is not provided. CLASS RULES: These rules also apply when a substitute teacher is in the room. 1. Raise your hand to ask permission to move and to speak. 2. Wear your I.D. at all times. No ID no services. 3. No foul language will be used. 4. No food, gum, candy, soda, sunglasses and electronic devices such as: phones, portable CD players, MP3 players or IPODs, portable video game systems, or gambling paraphernalia will be permitted in class. 5. Do not leave trash on the floors, desks, and bookshelves. Use the waste cans. 6. No personal grooming during class time 7. THE TEACHER, NOT THE BELL, DISMISSES YOU. CONSEQUENCES: Refusing to follow the rules could lead to one of the following consequences: 1. Warning 2. Call Parents 3. Parent-Teacher Conference 4. PS-74 COURSE POLICIES AND PROCEDURES:

4 W-UP: When the bell rings, you are expected to be at your seat working on your warm up. You will have 5 minutes to complete your work. I will stamp your paper to verify completion before doing corrections. If you are late to class (unexcused), you will not be able to make up the warm up. NO STAMP NO GRADE HOMEWORK: Will be assigned every class session. Please check for homework assignments. Homework is due in the TAREA basket when the bell rings. If you are late to class (unexcused), your homework will not be accepted. I will stamp your homework to verify completion before doing corrections. I will use the following rubric to grade your homework: 5 points = completed and shows corrections 4.5 points = missed 1 exercise and shows partial corrections 4 points = missed 2 exercises and shows partial corrections 3.5 points = missed 3 exercises and shows partial corrections 3 points = missed 4 exercises and shows partial corrections 2 points = missed 5 or more exercises and shows no corrections. Remember NO STAMP NO GRADE CLASS WORK: All book assignments (class work =35%) will be completed in a timely manner. Your work will be stamped to verify completion and collected before the bell rings. It is imperative that you bring your book to class in order to receive credit. You will not be allowed to share nor borrow a book from anyone in class. TEST/QUIZ (45%): Oral, listening comprehension, pop quizzes, unit/chapter test and projects. NOTE: Assessments that have been missed must be taken within one week of the missed test or quiz. Students who do not take the assessment within that time period will not be allowed to make up the assessment. PROJECTS: (45%) All projects will be graded using a rubric. NOTE: LATE PROJECTS WILL RECEIVE A LOWER GRADE: 1 day late = B 2 days late = C 3 days late = D CLASS PARTICIPATION: It is a critical and integral part of foreign language learning. Students will earn points based on: preparedness, attentiveness, cooperation, partner/group on task behavior, and efforts to use the target language. NOTE: IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO EARN PARTICIPATION POINTS WHEN A STUDENT IS NOT IN CLASS. REPEATED ABSENCES WILL AFFECT YOUR GRADE.

5 ATTENDANCE POLICY In accordance with Prince George s County Public School s Administrative Procedure 5113, Pupil Attendance and Absence, five (5) days of unlawful absence per semester course, or ten (10) days of unlawful absence per year in a full year course shall result in no grade ( N ) for a course. Additionally, students will receive a zero (0) for all work done on the day of an unexcused absence and will not be given the opportunity to make up work missed because of an unlawful absence. When absent, a student has two (2) days in which to bring in a note that excuses him/her for the absence. After that time, the absence becomes unexcused. The reason for the absence must be stated in the note. This note must be given to the Attendance secretary who will issue an attendance form (yellow slip) to the student. This form will denote whether the absence is lawful (excused) or unlawful (unexcused). It is the student s responsibility to present this attendance form to each of his/her teachers. According to Prince George s County Public Schools Administrative Procedure , Assessment and Grading for All Secondary School Programs, students who are considered lawfully absent from school will have the opportunity to make up missed work on a timely fashion (a maximum of three (3) days for each day s absence). Students who fail to complete missed work in a timely fashion will receive zero grades for those assignments. MAKE-UP ORAL PRESENTATIONS: Students who are absent on the day groups are formed or thereafter, will not be able to join a group nor re-group. Instead, you will be asked to create a power point presentation which will be presented using the target language after the last group s class presentation. WEB LINKS: When absent be sure to check for daily updates on w-up, homework, class work, quizzes/tests and projects. Go online to complete book activities, review grammar and vocabulary. This is a wonderful interactive tutorial tool. TUTORING: Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:30 to 3:30. NOTE: A copy of the classroom/grading policies and rules will be given to every student and must be signed by a parent or guardian.
