1 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for MI School Data General What is MI School Data? MI School Data is the Web presence for district users, the public, researchers, etc., to access and review Michigan education data. The MI School Data site is designed for use by both the public and educators, providing password-protected, secure access to individual-level student data and analyses designed with the school improvement process in mind. The site has feature-consistent data derived using well-established business rules. MI School Data contains district- and school-level data that correspond to metrics displayed in the state's MiDashboard (state-level metrics in MiDashboard can be found at The building blocks for MI School Data are: Data for Student Success (Data 4SS) Annual Education Report (AER) Federal and state reporting requirements. Why have MI School Data? MI School Data provides the following: Comprehensive views of Michigan education data to help improve instruction and benefit Michigan s children Enable school systems to prepare a higher percentage of students to succeed in rigorous high school courses, college and challenging jobs Consistent data with a common look and feel Public and secure access What information is in MI School Data? MI School Data provides comprehensive views of Michigan education data to help improve instruction and benefit Michigan s children. It enables school systems to prepare a higher percentage of students to succeed in rigorous high school courses, college and challenging jobs. MI School data also provides consistent data with a common look and feel with both public and secure access. The building blocks for MI School Data are: Data for Student Success (Data 4SS) Annual Education Report (AER) Federal and state reporting requirements Data will be available through MI School Data in phases. The first data populated included the Report Card with accountability and accreditation information in August of Assessment, enrollment, postsecondary and educator effectiveness reports were added in September, In future phases, data to be added to the MI School Data site

2 will include staffing, finance, and crime and safety. Additional postsecondary and early childhood data sets will also become available. Do I have access to MI School Data? MI School Data has both a public-facing and secure side. Security approval will be required for access to the secure portion of the site. Data 4 Student Success (Data4SS) registered authorized users were automatically grandfathered into the secure side of MI School Data, but will be prompted to change their password when they first attempt to log-in. In order to obtain a secure user name and password, please contact the MI School Data Help Desk at helpdesk@misd.net Can I download information from MI School Data? Yes. Data will be presented using several views that will include the following (where applicable): Summary Snapshot Trend (Longitudinal) Data Table The comparison view will initially allow comparisons of a school or a district with state data and with one additional user selected school or district. A more advanced comparison function will be developed in future phases. Each of these views will prepare a report that will be defined by parameters entered by the user. The finalized report will then be available by download in pdf and csv formats. Is this different from Data 4 Student Success (D4SS)? The security and display design of Data for Student Success forms the foundation of MI School Data. The Data for Student Success site will continue to function and be maintained during design of MI School Data. Your login and password for Data for Student Success works with MI School Data. The Data for Student Success Dynamic Inquiries will in time be moved to MI School Data. The Data for Student Success professional development modules also continue to be available. I am a registered user of Data 4 Student Success (D4SS). Will I still be able to access my account? The security and display design of Data for Student Success forms the foundation of MI School Data. 3 What will I need to do to complete my Annual Education Report (AER) reporting obligations? The Annual Education Report (AER) is available in MI School Data and MI School Data provides printable reports for AER. Please note that still works. The Michigan Education Dashboard page provides at-a-glance access to a variety of different metrics that can be used to see how a school, district, ISD, or even the whole State is performing. Each metric focuses on a narrow area to give an estimation of performance in a wider area. You can see metrics for the current year and the prior year in order to do a quick comparison and see trends. Hover over the values to see more information about when data were collected. Click on any metric with an underline to see more detailed data. What are the metrics displayed on the Report Card/Dashboard? The metrics on the Report Card/Dashboard section of MI School Data are as follows: Third Grade Reading Proficiency: Shows the percentage of third graders who scored at a proficient level on the MEAP assessment for the current school year and previous school year. The MEAP test is taken in the fall, and the scores will be updated in winter. Student Academic Growth 3-8: Shows the percentage of students in grades 3 through 8 who showed an improvement, or who scored at the highest performance level, in both math and reading on the MEAP test from one year to the next. The MEAP test is taken in the fall, and the scores will be updated in winter. Students Proficient in Math and Reading 3-8: Shows the percentage of students in grades 3 through 8 who scored at the proficient level or above on the MEAP test in both math and reading. The MEAP test is taken in the fall, and the scores will be updated in winter. Students Proficient on MME: Shows the percentage of 11th graders who scored at the proficient level or above on all subjects on the Michigan portion of the MME exam. The subjects are MME Reading, MME Writing, MME Math, MME

4 Science, and MME Social Studies. The MME test is taken in the spring, and the scores will be updated in the summer. ACT Composite Score: Shows the average ACT Composite score for 11th graders on the ACT portion of the MME exam. The ACT Composite is a score that combines score information for all subjects into one value. The subjects tested are: ACT English, ACT Reading, ACT Mathematics, and ACT Science, plus a writing sample. The MME test is taken in the spring, and the scores will be updated in the summer. ACT College Readiness Benchmarks: Shows the percentage of 11th graders who met or exceeded the College Readiness benchmarks in the ACT portion of the MME exam. The benchmarks are set as follows: ACT English 18 or above ACT Reading 21 or above ACT Mathematics 22 or above ACT Science 24 or above The MME test is taken in the spring, and the scores will be updated in the summer. 4 year Graduation Rate: Shows the percentage of students who graduated using a four-year on-time cohort method. Schools meeting federal Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP): Shows the percentage of schools within the selected area that made AYP for the year. If a school is selected this displays whether or not a school has made AYP. NOTE: This does not show District AYP, the percentages are shown for schools only. Self-Reported Bullying on School Property: Shows the percentage of 11th graders who reported being subjected to bullying while on school property. This is collected every two years. Free/Reduced Lunch participation by eligible students: Shows what percentage of students who are eligible for Free or Reduced Lunch (FRL) are taking advantage of the program. This is collected every year. Exactly how the percentage is calculated is as follows: The percentage measured is the percentage of Free Meals and Reduced Meals served, divided by the Total Eligibles. o i.e. (Free + Reduced)* 100/Eligibles Eligibles is calculated based on the formula (Sum of [Free Applications] and [Reduced Applications]) * [No of Days Served] The data are calculated from the School Nutrition Program - Claims System Database.

5 Districts with ongoing deficits for three consecutive years: Shows whether the district has been operating with a deficit budget for the past three fiscal years. If the scorecard is set to reflect an ISD or the State level, this will show the number of districts that have operated at a deficit for three fiscal years. This is collected every year. Why are there differences between the ACT scores posted on MI School Data and the scores the districts receive from ACT? The two score reports are based on two different data sets. The information displayed in MI School Data is based on a single test administration in the spring and includes only 11 th grade students that were tested. The ACT report, on the other hand, is based on a graduating cohort of students and therefore includes a number of retest scores, which may cause the composite values to be higher.
