3 Advancing Science Education The Museum created the Center for the Advancement of Science Education (CASE) to help realize our vision: to inspire and motivate all children to achieve their full potential in the fi elds of science, technology, medicine and engineering. CASE programs extend the content of Museum exhibits through strategies that empower teachers, engage the community, and excite students and Museum guests. We work with local school systems and collaborate with some of the best minds in science and education to develop and evaluate programs. Programs target four areas: Science Teacher Education Coursework offered though our Institute for Quality Science Teaching and Learning provides middle-school teachers with science content and teaching strategies directly relevant to their curriculum. Participants in our courses are eligible to earn a Master of Science Education degree, a middle-school science endorsement, or graduate credit through a partnership with the Illinois Institute of Technology. Our focus is on enabling teachers who are in the classroom today and creating a pathway for quality teachers who can inspire passion and excitement about science. Community Initiatives The Science Minors series of programs encourages children from diverse backgrounds to discover new interests and skills, prepare for college, and learn about science careers. After-school Science Minors Clubs extend science learning into places where younger students already spend their time after school. The Science Minors and Science Achievers youth development programs provide teens with science knowledge, public speaking skills, and opportunities to prepare for college and careers. Student Experiences Programs for school groups offered through our Institute for Quality Science Teaching and Learning use our captivating spaces to investigate the science behind everyday life. Learning Labs provide facilitated, engaging educational experiences that are aligned with Illinois Learning Standards in science. Labs have pre- and post-visit activities and additional resources to enhance what students learn in their classroom. Students also can dive deeper into science content and learn from working science experts by participating in special daylong programs like Forensic Field Day. Guest Experiences All Museum guests can take part in interactive experiences designed to meet different learning styles. Our new permanent exhibits foster engagement through guided exploration and facilitated hands-on activities. Stateof-the-art laboratories allow you to participate in more complex experiments, like dissecting an eyeball to learn about vision. You also can star in a funny play about the digestive system, engage in discussions about current science news, and much more. page 2

4 Transforming Science Teaching Teacher Education Courses Teachers can gain science content and teaching strategies directly relevant to their classroom curriculum. Our courses provide a broad background in science, are designed in accordance with national science education standards, and complement Museum exhibits and resources. Courses are offered at no cost to teachers selected to participate. 10 Exploring Science in Communities We re expanding our role in communities through partnerships with schools and organizations that extend science learning beyond the classroom and Museum walls. The Museum partners with schools and community-based organizations to offer young students early, hands-on exposure to science through after-school Science Minors Clubs. Clubs aim to increase interest in science in underserved neighborhoods by engaging students in places where they already spend their time after school. The clubs emphasize informal learning that builds curiosity and encourages teamwork. Our network of over 65 sites in the Chicago area serves over 4,700 students a year. Clubs are organized into four tiers Associates, Partners, Masters and Ambassadors that provide differing levels of support. The tiered approach is designed to give sites the confi dence and skills they need in order to provide science experiences on their own. Participating organizations receive: Science curriculum on topics including physics, renewable energy, engineering, health and more. Training and on-site support. Materials for hands-on activities. A fi eld trip and Family Day that provides access to the Museum for nearly 1,000 people. Learn more at msichicago.org/education/community/science-clubs. page 9

11 Inspiring Teens to Pursue Science Careers The Science Minors and Science Achievers youth development programs allow teens to explore science, discover new interests, develop leadership skills, and prepare for the future. In the Science Minors program, 14- to 17-year-olds attend 10 weeks of science education and training by Museum staff and other scientists and then volunteer to conduct interactive science experiments for Museum guests. Science Minors gain a better understanding of science, a fi rst-hand look at science careers, and public speaking skills. Since 2003, more than 600 Science Minors have contributed over 100,000 hours of service. Science Minors who have completed 50 hours of volunteer service and are at least 16 can become Science Achievers. Science Achievers deepen their work by pursuing more rigorous science topics, preparing for college and careers, mentoring new classes of Science Minors and having the opportunity for paid internships. Science Achievers demonstrate to children and adults that science is fun, hands on and relevant to their lives. They interact with people by conducting science activities at special events both at the Museum and at community events like family science nights and Chicago fairs and festivals.
